Nathan Lyon will have “no dramas” with either Steve Smith or Pat Cummins becoming the next skipper of Australia’s Test side as “they are probably the two best candidates” in his views. Notably, Cricket Australia has appointed a five-member panel to select the next captain of the side after Tim Paine resigned from the leadership position due to a historic scandal. Both Cummins and Smith have been interviewed by the committee including the chairman of selectors George Bailey and Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley but the former has garnered more support from the pundits and former players of the game. Lyon recalled his playing days for New South Wales under Cummins and said that he will make a good leader of the side. He also assured all support from senior players including himself if he will be appointed the next skipper. On the other hand, he rated Smith as a “great cricket mind” and one of the best batters going around the world cricket which can bring immense value to the Australian Test side. "I think you look at the two guys who have been interviewed by Australia for the two roles, I think they're probably the two best candidates in my eyes," Lyon said. "Playing under Pat at New South Wales cricket in the one-day set up last year, I think he did a really good job, to be honest with you. I know it's going to be a different kettle of fish, but he's got a lot of senior players around him to support Pat if he does get the nod. But then you look at Steve Smith, I think Smithy is up there with the best batters in the world. He's got a great cricket mind and I've got no dramas with both of them putting their hand up for the captaincy, to be honest with you." The first Test of Ashes is scheduled to start on December 09 at Gabba in Brisbane.
Australia’s chief selector George Bailey withdraws from voting on Paine’s selection
Tim Paine’s position in the Australian cricket team for the upcoming Test series looks in jeopardy post his resignation as skipper after the sexting scandal came to light. Added to it is the bad from that Paine has shown in his return to playing cricket for Tasmania second XI against South Australia. With all things going on around Paine, his close friend and Australia’s chief selector George Bailey has pulled out of voting on Paine’s selection in the playing XI for the first Ashes Test starting on December 08 at the Gabba. "If the panel was not in agreeance on Tim's position going forward, and it was going to come down to a vote, then I would step aside and leave that to Tony and Justin to work through. They're both aware of that," Bailey was quoted as saying in the Cricket Etc podcast. Usually, the selection panel comprises Chief selector Bailey, coach Justin Langer and the recently appointed Tony Dodemaide. Reasoning as to why he is pulling out, Bailey said, "By saying that (he would recuse himself of a vote on Paine), it sounds like Tim is the only close friend I have. Since the day I was given the opportunity to have that role, we've been aware that that's the case. I have strong friendships and relationships that go back a number of years with the players," said Bailey. Bailey and Paine have been friends and playing mates for the last 15 years.
George Bailey replaces Trevor Hohns as chairman of Australian selection committee
Former Australia captain George Bailey has been named as the chairman of the national selection committee and he will replace the outgoing chairman Trevor Hons, who has decided to quit his post. Hohns served the role of head selector in his two stints with the Australian senior men side. He had first taken up the chairmanship in 1995 and served until 2005 and later took up the role once again in 2016. Bailey’s elevation to the chair of the selection committee highlights his increasing stature among the Cricket Australia ranks. Bailey was inducted into the committee shortly after he bid adieu to the game as a player. Cricket Australia has started its search for the third member of the selection panel who will accompany head coach Justin Langer and incoming chairman Bailey. Bailey’s leadership has always been rated highly by Cricket Australia as he was trusted to lead the Australia T2OI side before he made his international debut. He led Australia in his debut series against India in 2011-12 which was quite remarkable at that time and he later rose to the leadership of the ODI team in absence of Michael Clarke, who was grappling with injuries. Bailey did not have a long career at the international stage and played 29 ODIs and 28 T20Is for Australia. However, his experience in the shortest format—T20s is immense with 213 appearances.

Talking about the butterflies in the stomach before the big game, Will said that he always remembers the advice his school coach gave him. “I had a coach at school who was very wise, his name was Gary McFair. When I was in year seven and was playing in the first team. I was a bit nervous and that time I was a bit chubby too. I was anxious to know what other guys might be doing. The coach came to me and said, ‘Mate you will be fine, just go out there and enjoy yourself’,” Will told former Aussie captain George Bailey in an interview shared by cricket.com.au “Now every time I go in the middle, I just try to remember that Mantra to go out there, enjoy and see what happens,” added the Victorian saying that he would be looking forward to the opportunity ahead and be able to help the team win the series. Bailey then asked a pertinent question about the long hauls that Pucovski is known for playing. “What do you think gives you the ability to bat for long enough to score the runs and the capacity to score hundreds?” Bailey asked. Answering it, Will said, “When I was a kid, I never believed that I had that ability. So I always just stayed in, nurdled the ball around, and made my 30 retired. I just hated going out of the ground,” “I used to watch Sammy Harper, now smacking them with Renegades. He is one of my best mates. I remember playing with him over one weekend and he used to hit sixes and fours at will. And I couldn’t do that. So I started focusing on what I could do better and started working on it,” he added.
