SA vs IND | 3rd ODI: India make four changes, inlcude Suryakumar Yadav in playing XI

India skipper KL Rahul once again won the toss and this time around decided to bowl first in the third ODI against South Africa on a bouncy wicket at Newlands, Cape Town. The Indian team has made four changes in the XI that played in the second ODI at Paarl while the hosts have also brought in one change. Suryakuamr Yadav has come in place of Venkatesh Iyer while Prasidh Krishna gets the first chance after his debut against England at the start of 2021. He has been drafted in place of Bhuvaneshwar Kumar while Deepak Chahar and Jayant Yadav have been named as like for like replacements for Shardul Thakur and Ravichandran Ashwin. As far as the Proteas are concerned, they have chosen to play the tall fast bowler Dwaine Pretorious in place of chinaman Tabraiz Shasmi conjuring the bouncy conditions of the wicket. This game is inconsequential in the sense that South Africa have already won the series with a 2-0 unassailable lead.

SA vs IND | Jayant Yadav & Navdeep Saini added to India’s ODI squad

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) added spinner Jayant Yadav and pace bowler, Navdeep Saini, to the Indian ODI squad for the upcoming three-match series against South Africa. The decision was taken after off-spinner Washington Sundar was ruled out of the series after testing positive for Covid-19 during the team camp in Bengaluru. While Sundar was supposed to make his India comeback with this series having been injured post the team’s tour of England in 2021, the All-India Senior Selection Committee named Jayant Yadav as his replacement. Saini was added to the ODI squad as a back-up for Mohammed Siraj who is still nursing a hamstring injury that he sustained in the 2nd Test against South Africa in Johannesburg. India’s ODI squad KL Rahul (Captain), Jasprit Bumrah (vice-captain), Shikhar Dhawan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, Venkatesh Iyer, Rishabh Pant (wicket-keeper), Ishan Kishan (wicket-keeper), Yuzvendra Chahal, R Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Deepak Chahar, Prasidh Krishna, Shardul Thakur, Md. Ashwin wins 9th Player of the Series award, stands behind only Muttiah Muralitharan on iconic list

Ashwin wins 9th Player of the Series award, stands behind only Muttiah Muralitharan on iconic list

There is no stopping Ravichandran Ashwin in India as he has leapfrogged former Pakistan skipper Imran Khan and equalled former South Africa’s all-rounder Jacques Kallis on the list of players with most Player of the Series award to their names. He has now won nine Player of the Series award in only 81 Tests across 33 series and stands behind only M Muralitharan, who won 11 such awards in his 133-game and 61-series long career. Kallis won nine such awards in his 161-game long career spread across 61 Test series while Imran Khan played 88 Tests and 28 series to win eight Player of the Series award. He has been an instrumental figure in India’s indomitable rise in the longest format in home conditions and the story was no different in the series against New Zealand. He picked 14 wickets in the two-match long series and also played a crucial role with the bat in the first Test to bail the hosts out of troubling situations. He picked three wickets in each innings of the first Test and followed it up with four wickets each in the second and final Test of the series in Mumbai. He bowled his heart out on the final day of the first Test in Kanpur but New Zealand lower-order batsmen, especially Rachin Ravindra and Ajaz Patel held their grounds to deny India the win. The pitch in Kanpur did offer spin to him and his fellow spinners but the pace of the surface was so slow that batsmen did get more than enough opportunity to defend good balls. He rated the pitch at Wankhede Stadium as “wonderful” as it offered both the spin and “bit more bite” which he always emphasize on. The balls were bouncing as well while taking turns and hence there were a lot of wickets to spinners, unlike the first game where they had to toil hard and purchase wicket. "I enjoyed that pitch, spun and had a bit more bite," he said in the post-match presentation. “It was a wonderful pitch. Every time you come to Wankhede, there's something to look forward to.” When Ajaz Patel completed his rare achievement of picking all 10 wickets in an innings, whole spectators at Wankhede Stadium were up on their feet and one prominent of them all was Ashwin, who was giving him resounding applause from the Indian dressing room. He credited his bowling effort and called it part of destiny that he came to the city of his birth to achieve such a monumental feat. “Before I get to what I did, it was wonderful from Ajaz. He put the ball in the right places, I enjoyed watching him bowl. It was destiny, I think,” Ashwin lavished praise on Ajaz Patel. India were playing with two off-spinners after a long time and the last time they did the combination was the same as it was there in Mumbai as Jayant Yadav returned after a long gap of nearly five years. They work on a different mode of operations but Ashwin said that he enjoys a “good relationship” with Jayant, who has spent time with him to understand his understanding of the game and also Axar Patel, who has been his teammate for a long time now while playing in the IPL as well outside of Team India. “Jayant and I have a good relationship from 2014 when he flew down to Chennai from Haryana to pick my brains. Axar, I've been playing for a while at Kings and Delhi Capitals. For starters, I'd look to play a part in South Africa and finish off with a series win,” Ashwin said.

IND vs NZ | 2nd Test, Day 3: Ashwin puts Blackcaps on brink after punishing batting dominance

India took another emphatic step towards their dominance in the game and series win on the third day of the second Test against New Zealand in Mumbai. They have eliminated the top five batsmen of the Blackcaps batting lineup and are still ahead by a mammoth margin of 400 runs to seek dominance on the fourth day of the Test. They were already ahead in the game and even a batting collapse would not have brought the Kiwis back in the game. That collapse did not come either as Mayank Agarwal was in no mood to waste his form and Cheteshwar Pujara was eager to score some runs with having no real pressure on his shoulders in terms of the team’s situation. Frustration continues for Pujara, Kohli India were way ahead in the game on the third day and lack of runs and game time in the middle would have been one of the reason behind India delaying their declaration or taking a cautious approach in batting. The two main batsmen in focus were Virat Kohli and Pujara, who have spent more than two years of their life without scoring a hundred and their batting numbers have started to make them look like a pale shadow of themselves. Pujara, in particular, was looking to bat with intent as he punched on anything loose by Ajaz Patel and Will Somerville. He was down the track quickly and played with the minds of the spinners to take a strong foot forwards towards the elusive big score. However, as has been the case this year, his error in judgment while playing a flatter delivery off Ajaz Patel got him dismissed in the slip as the slowish delivery gripped and turned ever so slightly to grab the edge of his bat. His departure was followed by a resounding welcome for Kohli by the spectators present at Wankhede Stadium as they would not be hoping to see him again for a long time, at least in the format. Also, the team were in fantastic condition and there was no pressure for him against any bowlers, except the lone warrior in Ajaz Patel. Kohli looked promising and showed his intention of playing with the aggressive approach by taking Somerville over the fence at deep midwicket. He was also decisive in his footwork and was rarely found in no man’s land against spinners. However, just when he too looked set for a big score, an innocuous delivery took the inside edge of his bat and ricocheted to hit the stumps and leaving him with a wry smile which was a clear sign of helplessness from the Indian skipper. Infinite tricks of Ravichandran Ashwin India were not banking on the pacers to do the magical job they did in the first innings and they were at the Kiwi openers from the word go with Ashwin from one end with the new ball. He has had tasted tremendous success against Tom Latham and his variations have always kept the left-hander guessing although he was super in Kanpur. Even there, he was the only bowler who troubled him with his variations in spin and pace. The off-spinner rolled out a perfect mix of slower off-spinner and faster arm balls to deceive Latham into playing down the wrong line. He did not have to play too many tricks to claim Young, who could not provide a solid defence to a sharply bouncing delivery while he was playing a few attacking shots too cleanly. Ross Taylor appeared to have come to the crease with the thought that batting while defending a lot of deliveries was not a viable option and hence he tried to throw caution to the wind. The idea was good but the execution was awful as he picked the worst ball to attack. Ashwin was very slow in the air, so much so that Taylor had to wait for an eternity to have the ball in his arc and his inability to delay the shot produced a top edge that Pujara caught with some struggle. Looking ahead to the fourth day India have just five wickets to take and win the series 1-0 and there are far too much help in the pitch for them and very few batsmen to lead New Zealand’s resistance on such a helpful pitch. New Zealand have the duo of Rachin Ravindra and Henry Nicholls to lead their resistance on the fourth day and they would be looking to at least delay the inevitable if not bring about a miraculous escape.

IND vs NZ | 2nd Test, Day 2: Mohammed Siraj, Ashwin demolish Blackcaps to lowest total against India

IND vs NZ | 2nd Test, Day 2: Mohammed Siraj, Ashwin demolish Blackcaps to lowest total against India

After a commanding batting performance on the back of a fabulous 150 from Mayank Agarwal, India bundled New Zealand out for a mere 62 in the first innings of the second Test being played in Mumbai. Mohammed Siraj started the rout with three top-order wickets of Will Young, Tom Latham and Ross Taylor before the spinners came into action and dismantled any hopes of Kiwis’ revival in the game. No Kiwi batsman could bat for more than 36 balls and Kyle Jamieson was the only batsman to cross the 15-run mark in what turned out to be a shambolic batting performance. Ravichandran Ashwin was superb with his variety and control over them and was the most successful Indian bowler with four wickets. Axar Patel was also on the money and picked two wickets while Jayant Yadav, who has returned to Test cricket after a gap of four years, picked up one wicket. India achieved a big lead of 263 runs in the first innings and have decided against calling New Zealand for follow on. The pitch is only going to deteriorate further and hence the team management opted to make full use of the opportunity to bat New Zealand out of the game rather than bringing their spinners in the game by batting fourth.

Mothers’ Day Special: Watch Mumbai Indians stars get emotional and thank their mother for all the sacrifices

“Only a mother’s love is unconditional. It is only her who at the end of the day asks you, ‘Have you eaten anything? Did you get a sound sleep?,” these were the words of Rahul Chahar, the Mumbai Indians leg spinner while wishing her mother on the occasion of International Mother’s day on May 9. The Mumbai based franchise released a video n twitter where the star players talk about the importance of a mother in their life and wish her on an important day. Apart from Chahar, Suryakumar Yadav, Kiwi bowlers Trent Boult and Adam Milne, South Africa's Quinton de Kock, India's Jayant Yadav, Saurabh Tiwary and the Pandya brothers Hardik and Krunal featured in the video. While Boult and Milne thanked their mother for handling them, Surya got emotional talking about the sacrifices his mother made for him. “You can’t explain in it in words, the sacrifices that a mother makes for her child,” he said. “For me, it’s an emotional thing actually (talking about his mother), but I would like to wish her good health,” Surya said trying to gulp emotions down his throat, while they were clearly visible in his eyes. “And it’s my time now to give whatever little that I could for all she has done and to keep her happy and as close as possible to me,” added the 30-year-old, who made his India debut in February. The Haryana spinner, Jayant too was overwhelmed talking about the sacrifices his mother made for him to archives his dreams. “My mother is the best because of all the efforts and sacrifices she has put in raising three of us (him and his siblings) and making us the best versions of ourselves,” he said. Former Jharkhand skipper Saurabh Tiwary said that he understood the importance of his mother in his life only once he went out of his home for various tours and tournaments. Senior Pandya, Krunal too was emotional enumerating all that his mother has done for him and his brother to make them realise their dreams.

IPL 2021 mini-auctions: Mumbai Indians sits relaxed ahead of the Auctions

IPL 2021 mini-auctions: Mumbai Indians sits relaxed ahead of the Auctions

You only have to attend an IPL match at the Wankhede Stadium and watch the lights flicker and the floor tremble as the massive wave of applause echoes around the ground when the Mumbai Indians takes the field in their fortress. Over the years, the Mukesh Ambani owned franchise has gone onto become the best team in the tournament and there is hardly any chinks in their armour going into the 2021 IPL mini-auction. They have got almost all their bases covered and will just look to finetune their final combination going into the 14th edition of the tournament. The champions of the last two editions have been on a match-winning spree and have hardly put their foot wrong, especially in the 2020 edition. Defending their title, the Mumbai Indians was at their professional best and was by far the best team of the tournament. Coming into the final of the 2020 edition on the back of a comprehensive victory against the Delhi Capitals in Qualifier 1, Mumbai Indians decided to change their winning combination and gave a chance to offie Jayant Yadav which proved to be a masterstroke in the end. Introduced in the powerplay, Jayant bagged the prized wicket of Shikhar Dhawan which put the Capitals on the backfoot right from the word go. This clearly suggests that the 5-time champions relies more on match-ups and player battles which is hardly the case with any other teams. Starting from the top of the order to the middle to the lower middle order and the bowlers, Mumbai Indians have one of the strongest teams on paper and given how the MI management tends to manage their players well, it shouldn’t be a surprise if MI manages to eke out some big buys in the limited opportunities they have. Strengths On paper, Mumbai Indians hardly have any weakness to deal with but they will still look to add some value to their squad once the Mini Auction gets underway on 18th February. The core of Mumbai remains the same with several options in the opening department. Rohit Sharma who opened in the last edition might look to continue at the top of the order to prepare himself for the T20 World Cup slated to be played later in the year in India. The top of the order is so settled that someone like Chris Lynn had to warm the benches for the whole of the previous season. However, MI still decided to retain him and he might go onto make his debut for the franchise in the upcoming edition. He is an impact player and it will be interesting to see if he is given an opportunity in the upcoming edition especially given the fact that they have all their bases covered in the top order. When it comes to the middle order the Pandya brothers along with pocket-sized dynamite Ishan Kishan and Kieron Pollard has set the tournament ablaze on several occasions and will definitely look to continue their domination. Now when it comes to the bowling department, the franchise arguably has the two best new ball bowlers Trent Boult and Jasprit Bumrah. Even in the spin department, guys like Rahul Chahar and Krunal Pandya has done a great job for the franchise. Hence nothing much needs to be changed for the 5-time champions. Expected Playing XI ahead of the auction Rohit Sharma, Quinton de Kock, Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Kieron Pollard, Krunal Pandya, Hardik Pandya, Jayant Yadav, Rahul Chahar, Trent Boult, Jasprit Bumrah Opportunities Mumbai Indians might be looking for a fast bowler from the local set-up to partner with Bumrah and Boult. In the batting department, they might look for a few dynamic foreign players given the fact that they still have 4 overseas slots left among the 7 available spots. Barring these few inclusions here and there, not much needs to be changed for the most successful team in the tournament. PLAYERS RETAINED: Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Quinton de Kock, Anmolpreet Singh, Aditya Tare, Chris Lynn, Saurabh Tiwary, Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, Kieron Pollard, Jayant Yadav, Trent Boult, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohsin Khan, Rahul Chahar, Anukul Roy PLAYERS RELEASED: Mitchell McCleneghan, James Pattinson, Lasith Malinga, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Sherfane Rutherford, Digvijay Deshmukh, Prince Balwant Rai Singh. Auction purse left: 15.35 CR Slots available: 7 Overseas slots: 4

Hits & Flops as dominant Mumbai register their first ever title defense

Hits & Flops as dominant Mumbai register their first ever title defense

]In an utterly one-sided match, the Mumbai Indians defeated Delhi Capitals by five wickets with eight balls to spare in Dubai. Delhi could only win the toss in this game and even after winning the toss, made the wrong choice of batting first on a pitch and place which was about to get a lot of dew. Batting first, Delhi recovered from 22/3 to 118/4 in 15 overs thanks to a brilliant 96 run stand between two young guns Rishabh Pant and skipper Shreyas Iyer. However, after the 17th over, Delhi could only score 22 runs from 18 balls, and logically speaking, no one wins matches after doing that bad in the death overs. Mumbai, when they came to bat were also given a jolt as Stoinis picked up the wicket of Quinton de Kock for naught. But Mumbai being Mumbai recovered well, and with the help of skipper Rohit Sharma’s 68 (51) won the game quite comfortably. On this note, let’s look at Hits and Flops from the game. Hits #1 Trent Boult Boult as always was right on the money from the first ball as he removed the all-important Marcus Stoinis to give Delhi Capitals not only a shock but also a jolt to their morale, as a young team playing their first-ever final lost their main man without any score on the board. But that was not it as the Kiwi came back in the second over to remove experienced Ajinkya Rahane as well. With two wickets in the powerplay, Boult was the pick of the bowlers. However, bowling the 18th over, he brought the momentum down once again picking up the dangerous-looking Shimron Hetmyer and giving just six runs off the over to finish his spell at 3/30 from overs. The 31-year-old had been so impressive with the ball in the powerplay in the entire tournament that he was awarded the CRED Powerplayer of the Season award. Boult also got the honors of being Man of the Match in a winning cause in a league’s finale. #2 Rohit Sharma Big games require big players to step up and what a moment did Rohit Sharma choose to finally find his form in the tournament. In the finals, the Hitman scored a brilliant 68 off 51 balls with the help of five fours and four sixes before one Anrich Nortje bouncer climbed too quickly on to him and he could not give the pull shot a direction and a brilliant catch by substitute fielder Lalit Yadav ended his innings. But Rohit had by then done his work. Although he had gotten Surykumar Yadav run out, still he made sure that the team has reached a safe place from where anybody can take the game home. #3 Jayant Yadav Playing only his second IPL game this season, Jayant Yadav repaid the faith put in him by the team management by playing him ahead of a proven bowler like Rahul Chahar. Yadav did exactly what he was brought in for; pick the wicket of Shikhar Dhawan. After achieving his target, he kept on bowling the right line and length and gave away only 25 runs in his spell of four overs and that too in a final, making his entry into the team even more special. Flops #1 Shikhar Dhawan With brilliant innings in the last match against Sunrisers Hyderabad, the Gabbbar was expected to lead the team here as well. If one gets out on the first delivery that he or she faces, it is understandable as was the case with Stoinis. But even after playing 13 balls if a person is getting bowled in a clueless manner to an off-spinner and leaving his team in deep travel, he deserved to be in the list of Flops. Dhawan could add only 15 to his total 603 runs brought in from previous games and finished as the second-highest run-scorer in the IPL 2020, behind Kings XI Punjab’s KL Rahul. #2 Kagiso Rabada Another one of the Delhi stars from the previous matches, the South African speedster too failed in fulfilling his roles as a strike bowler as he was not able to pick even a single wicket in the Powerplay. Having been a purple cap holder, at least this much was expected from him, but he failed to deliver on the biggest stage. True that the total to defend was not big and rather modest, still the approach from Rabada didn’t look positive either. Rabada did pick one wicket at the very fag end of the Mumbai innings and took his tally of wickets in this season to end up winning the Purple Cap, given to the highest wicket-taker of the league. Special Mention: Rishabh Pant and Ishan Kishan Rishabh Pant for the first time in the entire tournament looked promising and free-flowing scoring a brilliant 56 off 38 balls with four fours and two sixes. However, he couldn’t just take his innings ahead and got on a crucial juncture in the fifteenth over, where he was needed the most to accelerate and get the team to a fighting total, but he failed to do so. On the other hand, the rise of Ishan Kishan as a prominent face of wicket-keeper- batsmen in the Indian domestic cricket continued with his yet another brilliant innings. Ishan came with the fall of Surya’s wicket when the team’s total was 90 and 67 runs were required for the victory. He built a 47 run stand with Rohit Sharma. When Rohit Sharma got out with the team’ score at 137, 20 runs were still required and even as Kieron Pollard and Hardik Pandya got out trying to play the glory shot, Kishan hung in to see the team through. The Jharkhand born also remained the hi8ghest run-getter for Mumbai this season with 516 runs from 14 games.
