Player Bio

Sybrand Engelbrecht is a Netherlands cricketer who was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, on 15 September 1988. He is an all-rounder, right-handed batter and right-arm off-break bowler. The all-rounder started his career in South Africa and made his first-class debut for Northerners in October 2007, and did well with both bat and ball. He made an impact during the Under 19 World Cup in Malaysia, playing for South Africa in 2008 with his stunning fielding at point and took catches that drew comparison with the great Jonty Rhodes.

Engelbrecht has spent time working on his power game as much as staying power at the crease and is a stylish right-handed batter, a right-arm off-spin bowler and an outstanding fielder with his athletic catches. He has a List A average of more than 45 per innings. He last played for Cape Cobras in South Africa before moving to Netherlands in 2014.

He is captain of Voorburg Cricket Club in the Dutch Topklasse, and this year his team won the second top-class title in 91 years.

The all-rounder is a successful businessman also. He has an MBA degree and works with Fairtree, a global investment firm which has roots in South Africa. Fairtree has partnered with the Royal Netherlands Cricket Association as a sponsor for creating an environment for individuals to follow in their pursuit of excellence in the spirit of the game for the Netherlands.

With a good average in List A career, being an all-rounder and a brilliant fielder, Engelbrecht is on the Netherlands national team for the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in October to be held in India. Their first match is against Pakistan in Hyderabad on October 6th. The Dutch team, with youth and experience, could use Engelbrecht as a player to excel for them as they go forward in the World Cup and future.
