Pooran grabbed headlines and the attention of cricket pundits and fans when he announced his arrival with a series of swashbuckling innings in the Caribbean Premier League 2013. He was then just a 16-year-old lad who could tonk the ball to a long-distance and he displayed the proof of his hard-hitting skills when he smashed a 24-ball-54 in his fairy match. The 2013 edition of the CPL was followed by the Champion League and the ICC U-19 World Cup in 2014 where he showed his prowess on an international stage. He was immensely successful in the 2014 U-19 World Cup scoring 303 runs from just six innings.

The Trinidadian suffered a traumatic experience when he underwent an almost fatal car accident that injured his ankle and forced him away from cricket for a lengthy period of two years. But, he backed himself to come good and made a comeback in the CPL 2016. He earned a national call up in 2016 but a wrong choice by him as per the West Indies cricket board by opting to play in the Bangladesh Premier League instead of the domestic cricket landed him a 10-month ban from international cricket.

Pooran has been regarded as one of the best talents emerging out of the Caribbean islands in the recent past. He was picked up by the Kings XI Punjab for the Indian Premier League 2019 for a stupendous sum of Rs 4.2 crore. However, he could not own the season and ended up adding only 168 runs from the 7 games he was selected for.

The southpaw was rated highly by the previous management led by the then coach Mike Hesson who had called him ‘young Chris Gayle and the 2020 IPL season was proof of it. He became an integral part of the PBKS squad in 2020, smashing 353 runs with a high score of 77. A terrific white-ball hitter, Pooran had a disastrous start to the 2021 edition of the IPL when he was dismissed on four ducks in 7 innings and ultimately he was replaced by Dawid Malan.

The flamboyant left-hander will have to stand up to all the expectations that team management has of him or else his story too will be another addition to the stories of talents who could not make use of it.
