A tall, aggressive seam bowler, Avesh Khan is an upcoming prospect who is known for his seam movement and bounce generated. Hailing from Indore, Avesh started playing tennis ball cricket when he was 10 years old and started his cricketing journey at the Colts Cricket Club in Indore.
One of the talismans during the U-19 World Cup in 2014 and 2016, the 24-year old pacer picked the most number of wickets for India (12) at an impressive average of 15.08. His notable returns in first-class cricket have made him a regular feature in the India ‘A’ sides. At the age of 21, he got the first opportunity to represent India as a net bowler for their Test Series against the Proteas.
After debuting for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (then Royal Challengers Bangalore) in the 2017 Indian Premier League (IPL), Avesh moved to the Delhi Capitals (DC) in 2018 in search of more game time but could not be a regular feature in the team’s playing XI.
The muscular bowler from Indore had a breakout season with the Capitals in the 2021 IPL, scalping 24 wickets, ending the campaign as the second-highest wicket-taker in the cash-rich league. He went to Lucknow Super Giants leading up to IPL 2022, but did not enjoy the same level of success there, bagging 18 and mere eight wickets in the seasons he played for them.
Avesh made his international debut in the 2022 T20I series against the West Indies. In the June of same year, he took a four-wicket haul in a home T20I versus South Africa, his career-best figures in the format as of now.
In July 2022, he made his ODI debut against the Windies at Port of Spain.
He also played in the Asia Cup 2022 and was in the mix for the selection of the T20 World Cup 2022. However, after the match against Hong Kong, he was hit with a viral fever and did not take any further part in the tournament.
Avesh was the highest wicket-taker for Madhya Pradesh in the Ranji Trophy 2022-23 with 38 scalps in 14 innings.
He donned the Indian jersey in the Asian Games 2023, taking a three-for in the quarter-final match versus Nepal.
On the 2023-2024 South Africa tour, he took four wickets in the first ODI of the series. In the official four-day fixture scheduled versus the Proteas, he grabbed a fifer, thus making his way in the Indian Test side as Mohammad Shami’s replacement.
He was traded to Rajasthan Royals ahead of IPL 2024 and he delivered for them in the death overs. His performance saw him earning a place in India’s reserves for the T20 World Cup 2024.
