The fitness regime put in place by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is once again in news for the wrong reason as six young and emerging players have failed to pass through a newly-introduced 2-km run test. These six players include promising wicketkeeper batsmen Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan, batsman Nitish Rana, spin bowling all-rounder Rahul Tewatia along with fast bowlers Siddarth Kaul and Jaydev Unadkat have failed to clear the test. According to a TOI report, in this test, any batsman, wicketkeeper of a spinner has to complete a distance of 2 kilometres in eight minutes 30 seconds while the pacers have to complete the task in only eight minutes and 15 seconds. The report further said that there were players who could barely manage to complete the task. “In this test, a batsman, wicketkeeper, or a spinner has to complete the two-kilometre distance in eight minutes and 30 seconds, while for a fast bowler, the benchmark is eight minutes and 15 seconds. Six of the players failed to clear these tests. Some players barely managed to complete the run,” TOI quoted an unnamed source as saying. The BCCI has clarified that they will get another chance after a short while to pass this test as this system has been brought in very recently. However, according to the TOI report, another failure in the second attempt may affect their chances of making it into the Indian team for the limited-overs series against England. “Since this is a new type of fitness test, they will all get a second chance to clear it at a fresh date, after some gap. However, if they fail to clear it, then it puts their selection for the forthcoming white-ball series comprising five T20Is and three ODIs against England at home in doubt,” source added.
SMAT 2021: Siddarth Kaul stars in Punjab’s drubbing of Karanataka
Punjab became the first team to win a competitive game in a re-built Motera stadium as they beat Karnataka in the quarterfinals of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2021. Siddarth Kaul was the star of the game for the Punjab team as he picked up three crucial wickets to break the back of the Karnataka batting line up. Chasing a paltry total of 88, the Punjab batsmen made a hash of it as even after an early dismissal of Abhishek Sharma, skipper Mandeep Singh alongside in-form Prabhsimran Singh took the game away from Karnataka. The duo added an unbeaten 85 for the second wicket as Prabhsimran remained not out on 49 while Mandeep made 35*. Abhimanyu Mithun picked the lone wicket for Karnataka. Earlier in the day, Punjab after winning the toss decided to send in Karnataka to bat. The decision was proven right by the Punjab pacers as between the three of them (Kaul, Sandeep Sharma, and Arshdeep Singh), they picked up seven wickets to dismantle Karnataka totally. Another medium pacer Ramandeep Singh too got two wickets. No Karanataka batter was able to apply themselves on the crease as Aniruddh Joshi top-scored with 27 off 34 balls. Punjab had also beaten Karnataka in the group stages of the SMA Trophy 2021. They will now face the winner of the Quarter Final game between Baroda and Haryana which will take place tomorrow. Siddarth Kaul's economical bowling pushes Karnataka on backfoot vs Punjab
Punjab bowler Siddarth Kaul continued his form with the ball in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2021 quarter-final against Karnataka in Ahmedabad. The right-handed medium pace bowler returned with figures of 3/15 in 4 overs that included a double-wicket maiden. He first scalped an important wicket of Devdutt Padikkal and later removed Pavan Deshpande and Abhimanyu Mithun before completing his allotted 4 overs. Kaul has been in good form in this tournament and has already picked up a couple of four-fers before this quarter-final. One of these came against Karnataka that also included a hat trick from the medium pacer during the course. Kaul now has 7 wickets from two matches against Karnataka. One of his two four-wicket hauls came against J&K where he returned with figures of 4/33 while went wicket-less only on one single outing that was against Railways. Karnataka were eventually bundled out for 87 in 17.2 overs. Sandeep Sharma, Arshdeep Singh and Ramandeep Singh picked up two wickets each while leg-spinner Mayank Markande also got a wicket of Aniruddha Joshi who top-scored with 27. The Karun Nair-led team had a decent start after Padikkal and Nair scored 24 for the first wicket. But Nair’s departure broke the shackles and there was fully of wickets as Karnataka were left tottering at 84/7 to eventually get bowled out.

The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy's 2021 edition is picking pace with passing days and after two over two hundred scores yesterday, it was a day of some other milestones today. Bengal’s Vivek Singh hit the first century of the tournament, batting against Jharkhand in an elite group B match at the Eden Gardens where the Bengal team registered their second win on a trot, defeating Jharkhand by 16 runs. Along with Vivke’s hundred, the bowling of the Bengal team deserves a bit of praise as well. Ishan Porel cleaned up the tail and ended up with figures of 3/32 in his four overs. Brief Scores: Bengal-161/6 in 20 Overs (Vivek Singh-100 not out, Monu Kumar 3/30) beat Jharkhand 145/9 in 20 Overs (Virat Singh 47, Ishan Porel 3/32) by 16 runs. The 30-year-old Kaul finished with the figures of 4/26 and apart from him, Arshdeep Singh picked two wickets as well. Prabsimran Singh with 89 not out was the star with the bat for Punjab as they lost only one wicket chasing an easy target.
