BBL 2021-22 | Gurinder Sandhu takes maiden BBL hat-trick to halt Perth Scorchers
Gurinder Sandhu took a hat-trick and dismantled the Perth Scorchers in match 36 of the ongoing edition of the Big Bash League in Carrara. He dismissed Colin Munro on the last delivery of the 12th over and followed with twin strikes of Aaron Hardie, Laurie Evans on the first and second delivery of the 16th over to reach the landmark. It was the seventh hat-trick of the Big Bash League tournament and the first for Sandhu, who made his debut in the tournament in the year 2012. Sandhu has three hat-tricks in Australian domestic cricket but it was first for him in the T20 tournament. He ended up picking a four-wicket haul for mere 22 runs in his four overs and helped the Thunder in containing the Scorchers to a score of 133 runs in an 18-over long game.

Alex Ross was at his very best with the bat as he guided Sydney Thunder to an easy seven-wicket win over Brisbane Heat in their opening clash of the Big Bahs League 2021. Ross’ unbeaten 61 off 46 balls combined with Sam Billings’ 45 not out and their 109 run partnership meant that Thunder chased down the total in the 18th over itself. This win with 17 balls remaining will give a boost to the net run rate of the Thunder which becomes crucial at later stages of the league. The chase of 141 did not start well for the Thunder who were playing at their home ground of Manuka oval. Alex Hales, the controversial import from England was removed on the second ball of the innings by Xavier Bartlett. Soon, Liam Guthrie, who was playing his first game for Heat, struck twice in one over to remove Matthew Gilkes and Sam Whiteman and force Thunder into a rebuilding phase. It was then that Billings combined with Ross and the duo finished the job at hand with much ease. Earlier in the evening, after winning the toss and deciding to field first, Nathan McAndrew gave a great start to the Thunder as he removed Max Bryant in the third over. Daniel Sams then removed Chris Lynn. Englishman Ben Duckett and Sam Heazlett then built a partnership of 83 runs in 66 balls and just when it seemed that they would tee off and get Heat to a respectable total past 160, Sams struck again and removed Heazlett. It was then the turn of Gurinder Sandhu as he removed two dangermen Duckett and Jack Wildermuth to push Heat into all sorts of trouble. If it weren’t for Bartlett’s late order hitting, where he made unbeaten 26 off 18 balls, getting to even 140 would have been mighty difficult.

Queensland Player Gurinder Sandhu became the first Australian in history to pick up two List-A hat-tricks. He achieved this feat while bowling in the Australian One-Day Cup, also known as Marsh Cup. Bowling against South Australia in his first year as a Queenslander, Sandhu finished with figures of 4-44 in his nine overs. Prior to this hat trick, Sandhu had also taken a hat-trick against Victoria in the Marsh Cup final of 2018 while he was playing for Tasmania. Sandhu, who came back for his last spell in the death, got the wicket of Thomas Kelly on the fifth ball of the 45th over with his slower one. On the next ball, he removed Nathan McSweeney with yet another off-cutter and he was caught at cover-mid-off by Marnus Labuschagne. Sandhu then came back in the 47th over and cleaned up Nathan McAndrew with a beautiful yorker. Earlier he had also gotten rid of Henry Hunt the opener. Apart from Sandhu’s feat, the match also saw the brilliance of Matt Renshaw who guided Queensland to victory with his brilliant 156 off just 109 balls. The knock was once again a statement f the fact that he is rightly being considered as one of the best going around in the Australian domestic set-up as was pointed out by Mark Waugh and Adam Gilchrist early this summer. Also making a strong case of his selection for the first Ashes Test as the Australian team’s first choice wicket-keeper batter was Alex Carey who hit a century in this game even as he ended up on the losing side. Carey scored 101 off 93 balls to give his team a great start. But the late batting order squandered it to finish the innings in the 48th over itself at 274.
