Here is a brief report of the action which transpired on Day 1 at M A Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai and Cricket Association Puducherry Ground 2, Puducherry.
Vijay Hazare Trophy: Injury rules out Manoj Tiwary, Majumdar remains skipper of Bengal
Experienced Bengal batsman and India cap holder Manoj Tiwary has not been picked in the Bengal team for the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy (SMAT). Tiwary, 34 is suffering from a knee injury which he picked up during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Anustup Majumdar, Bengal’s hero from the last year’s Ranji Trophy has retained the captaincy even as the team crashed out from the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy from the group stage in his captaincy. Shreevats Goswami, the wicket-keeper batsman will be his deputy while last year’s Bengal skipper Abhimanyu Easwaran, who is with the Indian team as an injury cover has also been named in the 21 man squad for the 50-over tournament. Speaking about the SMAT crashing, Bengal head coach and former India cricketer Arun Lal said, "You can't hold baggage of the previous years or the previous tournament. It's a dynamic game, you move on, you learn from your mistakes, losses and forget about it.” "We are preparing very hard for the next," he added. Bengal would once again be playing at home in Elite Group E, which is stationed at the Eden Gardens. Other teams in the group are Services, Jammu and Kashmir, Saurashtra, Haryana and Chandigarh.
SMAT 2021: Assam shock Bengal by 13 runs
In what is a big surprise of an already stemmed up Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, the North Eastern state of Assam shocked a much-fancied Bengal side by 13 runs at the Eden Gardens to give a huge jolt to the latter’s plans of making it to the Knockouts. Chasing a mediocre total of 158, the Bengal team got into a muddle, being choked by Assamese bowlers in the last few overs, and eventually ended up with just 144-8 at the end of 20 overs. The flow of runs was so slow and stagnant that in the last five overs, the Bengal batsmen could muster just 32 runs at the loss of five wickets. The big guns of Bengal like Shreevats Goswami and Manoj Tiwary failed to deliver at the time of emergency, Pritam Das was the wrecker-in-chief for the Assam team picking three wickets in his two overs. Anustup Majumdar, the Bengal skipper was the lone warrior who was left standing at the nonstriker’s end when all of the destruction was taking place. Earlier in the day, riding on young Riyan Parag's sensational 77 off 54 balls, Assam made 157 in their 20 overs. With this loss, Bengal’s hopes of reaching the knockouts are heading south until and unless they beat Dinesh Karthik led Tamil Nadu in their final group game on Monday. Even if they beat the Southern side, a lot will also depend on the net run rate, but aft6er the win, Bengal would at least give themselves an outside chance at qualifying.
