BBL 11 | Pattinson’s brilliant last over, Zahir Khan’s amazing spell catalyst in thrilling Renegades win

James Pattinson, the fast bowler once regarded as a pure class made for Test cricket, delivered with the ball in the shortest format fr his team Melbourne Renegades. The Gades who finished last year at the bottom of the table got off to a winning start as they defeated Adelaide Strikers by two runs in a thrilling last over encounter at their home ground of Docklands. Pattinson, who was given the duty to defend nine off the last over bowled a brilliant one in which he did not concede any boundary and also removed Wes Agar. He gave away only six runs that came from three doubles on the last three balls, thereby winning the game for his team. Prior to Pattinson, Kane Richardson, the stand-in captain in place of Aaron Finch who missed this game due to injury, also bowled a good 19th over after English import Reece Topley had given away 15 in the 18th over to bring the equation down to 18 from the last two. Richardson got the wicket of dangerous-looking Daniel Worral and had given way just five runs before a boundary of the last ball made the match really interesting. The Strikers would not have been in such difficult conditions if they had converted a brilliant start. Matthew Short and Jake Weatherlad had taken the Strikers to 45 without loss in the first five overs. However, Zahir Khan planned differently and removed both the players in quick succession. The wicket of Weatherland though was more of fielder Jake Fraser-McGurk who caught a blinder at the boundary line. Harry Nielsen tried building partnerships with Jonny Wells and Ryan Gibson. While the former was removed by Zahir as his third scalp, Gibson was retired gurt after an ankle injury. Soon Nielsen was caught out off the bowling of Will Sutherland and Daniel Drew, who was playing his debut BBL game was left to try and win it for the Strikers with the tail. Rashid Khan tried to support him with a quickfire 11, but it wasn't enough as Drew himself wasn’t able to clear the field as frequently as was required. Earlier in the evening, after winning the toss and deciding to bat first, Renegades got off to a great start courtesy of Mackenzie Harvey and Sam Harper. The openers added 65 in only 8.4 overs before the stand was broken. While Harper made 33, Harvey went on to bring up his fifty and was supported well by James Seymour who made 23 off 14 balls. But after the fall of these three batters, the men in red lost the plot. None among the late hitters in Mohammad Nabi, Sutherland and Jonathan Merlo could build on to the platform given to them by the top order. In fact, Renegades lost six wickets in the last three overs and could make only 14 runs. If they had lost this game, those last three overs would have haunted them for sure.

Watch: James Pattinson dangerously hurls ball at Daniel Hughes in follow-through, gets suspended

Former Australia Test bowler James Pattinson, who is playing for Victoria in the ongoing Sheffield-Shield threw a very dangerous ball that hit New South Wales batter, Daniel Hughes. Pattinson picked up the ball on follow-through and hurled it straight back at Hughes after a frustrating phase of play. The red cherry went on to hit the batter on his feet and left him limping on one foot. Though Pattinson immediately apologised by raising his hands, it was termed dangerous by the match referee and therefore the bowler has been suspended for one match. Hughes, who was the only NSW batter standing in between Victoria and a win on the final day of the four-day game with his solid 89, had frustrated the Victorian attack with his staunch resistance. However, NSW lost the match by a huge margin of 174 runs. In a statement released on Wednesday morning, Cricket Australia said, "Pattinson was charged and found guilty under Article 2.7 of the Code for throwing a ball at or near a player in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during a match.” "Pattinson was fined 100 per cent of his match fee for the Marsh Sheffield Shield match between Victoria and NSW held on November 5-8, 2021,” it added. Along with the match fee penalty, the 31-year-old who recently retired from international cricket was also suspended for the day-night Marsh One-Day Cup match against NSW at the MCG on Friday.

James Pattinson concedes he couldn't push his body to carry on despite Pat Cummins' persuasion

When the Australian pacer James Pattinson announced retirement from Test cricket earlier last month, there was a sense of disappointment among his fans and people who have tracked his journey since his debut in 2011. However, the Victorian has a different perspective to his life as a Test career and instead of ruing not having a prolonged career, he is cherishing the fact that he played the longest format for his country and is thankful for the opportunity. Pattinson made his Test debut against New Zealand in 2011 at the Gabba and promised a long and successful career for Australia. However, recurrent injuries derailed his journey more often than not and he spent more time outside of the Test squad than playing the game, and hence he knew his time was up before quitting the longest format. He said that Pat Cummins, whom he rated as one of “closest mates” in the Australian team tried to persuade him to take back the retirement decision but he was aware of the fact that the “point where you try and push and you can't push anymore” has arrived for him. "I'm pretty close with Pat Cummins, probably one of my closest mates in the team, and I rang him before I did it and he said 'is there any way I can convince you to stay?'," Pattinson said. "I said, 'to be honest I've made the decision and I'm relieved, then he was just supportive of it and everyone else was as well. It's nice people want you around, but it's a decision I made with my family. It's nice to feel like you'll be missed,” Pattinson said. "You can say I should probably have played more Tests but I'm thankful to just have the opportunity to represent my country and I'd like to think every time I went out that I gave everything," he said. "I've broken my back about seven times to try and play for Australia so that's the toll it takes and there comes a point where you try and push and you can't push anymore. I probably wouldn't change a thing, it's been an amazing journey and now I can move on to the next stage and enjoy that as well.” Pattinson, along with Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins made their Test debut around the same time in the year 2011. Pattinson played his debut Test after only nine first-class matches while Cummins played his debut Test against South Africa in Johannesburg as an 18-year-old before not playing the format for a six-year-long gap. Pattinson conceded that he was pushed at the highest level before his body was matured for the workload it had to deal with and it could well have contributed to his back not strengthening enough to take the load with experience. He said that the Australian team have better management of pace bowlers now than they had at his time and called the handling of the fitness and workload of his mate Cummins as a “blueprint” on how to handle pacers. "I was put in the position where I was probably a little ahead of my body, being thrown into the Test arena and doing well. Went from not playing to being the lead bowler in four or five Tests. That was the hardest thing, obviously, my body wasn't ready for that. It has probably contributed to my back being the way it is,” Pattinson asserted. "They've changed the way they manage players a bit now," Pattinson said. "The way they've handled Pat Cummins is probably the blueprint for how you handle your bowlers. What they did for him is fantastic."

James Pattinson retires from Test cricket, unavailable for upcoming Ashes series: Report

In what would come as a shocking development for Australian cricket, fast bowler James Pattinson has decided to take retirement from the longest format of the game, The Australian reported. He has communicated his decision to the national selectors about his unavailability for the upcoming home season including an Ashes series. Pattinson’s career has gone through on and off path due to recurrent injuries and rising stocks of other pace bowlers in the Australian camp. Pattinson made his Test debut way back in 2011 against New Zealand in Brisbane and started his career on high against India later that summer. His last Test appearance too came against the Blackcaps in early 2020 at the Sydney Cricket Ground. In his 10-year long career, Pattinson has managed to play only 21 Tests where he has taken 81 wickets at 26.33 apiece and a strike rate of 48.90. Pattinson’s retirement from the format will contemplate the team management led by Justin Langer and Time Paine in case they will need to strengthen the pace department after the trio of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood.

James Pattison ruled out of third Test

Australia fast bowler James Pattinson has been ruled out of the third Test against India due to bruised ribs. The match is scheduled to take place in Sydney between 7-11. “Fast bowler James Pattinson has been ruled out of our Australian squad for the third #AUSvIND Vodafone Test with bruised ribs,” said Cricket Australia (CA). CA hasn’t yet announced the replacement for the fast bowler. “He will not be replaced in the squad and will be assessed further ahead of the Brisbane Test match,” CA added. He has taken 81 wickets in 21 outings for Australia at an average of 26.33 and last featured in a Test against New Zealand last January. In other developments in the squads for the teams, David Warner, Sean Abbott and Will Pucovski have been included in the team for Australia with Joe Burns missing out his place. BBL 2020 Team Preview: Melbourne Renegades will put behind an off season to ignite the fire within

BBL 2020 Team Preview: Melbourne Renegades will put behind an off season to ignite the fire within

Melbourne Renegades, boosted by the current amazing form of their skipper Aaron Finch and new signings in the wings, would look to improve upon their last year’s showing, the worst in the history of the league. Coach Michale Klinger is hopeful that this year it would be different saying, “Everything last year was going a hundred miles an hour." BBL so far The Renegades have been one of those stories which if have unfurled well at the start of the season, had gone on to make the playoffs regularly. Into their 10th season now, the red machine have been in the Playoffs, with the best showing in the 2018-19 season, where they went on to defeat the city rivals, Melbourne Stars in a low-scoring thriller. The worst season came in the title defense, i.e. last year when they were unable to rise above the last spot for the most part of the season and ended there as well. The foreign signings If last season was a hurried one for Klinger and also the two Pakistani players pulling out, just ahead of the season, was a main worry for the new coach, he seems to have covered all this time around by signing some of the very experienced and quality foreign recruits Mohammad Nabi is one of them. The traveler, who like his Afghan junior Rashid Khan, has been in great demand across leagues, has been retained by the red and black. With an experience as vast as 270 T20 games, more than 4000 runs with the bat, and 267 wickets, there could hardly be anyone in the opposite camp who would not fear him as a player. And that’s his advantage apart from quick runs and tight bowling. Alongside him is his fellow Afghan, the young leggie Noor Ahmad. Just about 16 years, the Afghan impressed all with his brilliant showing in the Under-19 World Cup and was regarded as a prodigy after his excellent showing at Shpageeza Premier League, the premier T20 tournament in Afghanistan. He was readily signed by St. Lucia Zouks for CPL 2020, although he couldn’t reach the Caribbean to play. "We've [also] been tracking Noor Ahmad closely for more than a year now and although he's in the early stages of his career, he's an exciting prospect and he has a few tricks that'll make life difficult for batsmen," Klinger said about Ahmad. Along with these two, there are two very professional spinners in Pakistani all-rounder Imad Wasim and Pakistan-born South African leg-spin maestro Imran Tahir to bolster the bowling attack as well. However, it is the buy of Rilee Russow, the South African hitter that is going to be crucial for the Renegades, considering that he has scored nearly 5000 T20 runs in 201 games at a strike rate of more than 135 and can hit them as cleanly as anybody else. Talking about his plan of involving the foreign recruits all the time, Klinger said, “We're hoping to have three of them available as much as possible. It's going to be a combination of trying to fit in your best three of them at any stage with a combination of availability and sometimes tactical (factors) as well. We're really excited to have those (five) players with us." Melbourne Renegades BBL 10 Squad Squad: Aaron Finch (c), Cameron Boyce, Zak Evans, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Sam Harper, Marcus Harris, Mackenzie Harvey, Jon Holland, Josh Lalor, Shaun Marsh, James Pattinson, Mitch Perry, Jack Prestwidge, Kane Richardson, Will Sutherland, Beau Webster Overseas Players: Noor Ahmad (AFG), Mohammad Nabi (AFG), Rilee Roussow (RSA), Imran Tahir (RSA), Imad Wasim (PAK) Head Coach: Michael Klinger List Manager- Andrew Lynch, Assistant Coaches- Simon Helmot, Andre Borovec, Mick Lewis Strength & Conditioning Coach- Richard Johnson, Physiotherapist- Nick Adcock Home Ground: Marvel Stadium, Docklands Experience of Finch and Marsh crucial Shaun Marsh has been one player that has performed throughout the formats, be it First Class, List A, or T20s, he could be the most bankable player that can ever exist. Even in the last season, when things were downhill for the Renegades, the Western Australian was among runs. In fact, he had the most number of runs (449) for any Renegade in the entire league. He was also one of the lead scorers in the Sheffield Shield of both the 2019-20 season and the ongoing 2020-21 season. Finch, the skipper was also among runs last season. This season, he has been in great touch, moving to the top 10 of the ICC ODI rankings. Thus, it would be between these two to take the lead and get the Red Machine running. Klinger also thinks that the batsmen need to put their hands up. “We probably need some more match-winning performances from our top six. Bowling, it's just about finding the balance to get 20 quality overs. This year I feel like we have the squad to do it," he said. The T20 Specialists: Kane Richardson and James Pattinson Kane Richardson and James Pattinson are two bowlers that Australia have had an eye on for a long and they have performed throughout the leagues as well as for the country to make a name for themselves in the shortest format. Pattinson has just recently been an instrumental figure in Mumbai Indians’ victory in the IPL 2020. Though Richardson, 32, didn’t play in the IPL or the Australian home season citing personal reasons, he would be itching to get on the pitch and prove that he is still the favorite fast bowler of the team. Not really a T20 favorite, but Pattinson has improved his line and length to suit the game a lot more thus becoming one of the spearheads, picking 11 wickets in the last IPL for the Mumbai Indians. In his last season with the Heat, he picked up 9 wickets in six innings to get a call from MI as Lasith Malinga’s replacement. Richardson was flawless last year as well, as he picked 10 wickets in eight innings for the Renegades. It is these two that would have to lead the attack to get things on board. Spinners will pave the way Spinners and especially leg spinners have been a treat to watch in the T20 format. Considering their importance, the renegades renewed their arsenal by adding two to it in the form of Ahmad and Tahir who would be playing alongside Cameron Boyce. While Tahir has experience of playing around the world and taking 392 T20 wickets, Boyce has been handy with the ball in hand. Along with these pure spinners, all-rounders like Nabi and Imad will also be crucial for the team’s growth in the tournament. “Obviously you need one of those spinners to be able to bowl a Power Play over generally. Both Imran and Noor can do that. It's going to be a huge advantage having two wrist-spinners to go with someone like Cameron Boyce,” Klinger said. Possible Best XI: Aaron Finch, Sam Harper (wk), Shaun Marsh, Rilee Rossouw (OS), Beau Webster, Mohammad Nabi (OS), Will Sutherland, James Pattinson, Cameron Boyce, Kane Richardson, Imran Tahir (OS) The Renegades play their first game against Perth Scorchers on Saturday i.e. 12th December at Hobart.

Indian Test specialists off to Dubai

The preparations for India’s tour of Australia following the IPL 2020 is underway in full swing and the test specialists such as Chetshwar Pujara and Hanuma Vihari are scheduled to reach in the United Emirates to assemble before a long list of players travel down under for full series comprising of three ODIs, three T20Is and four Tests. Both the batsmen will be joined by the all coaching support staff such as Batting coach Vikram Rathour, bowling coach Bharat Arun and the fielding coach R Sridhar on the journey to the Emirates except the head coach Ravi Shastri who is set to join the touring party a day later on October 26. What makes the travel plans intriguing is that the selection panel led by the former Indian left-arm spinner Sunil Joshi is yet to pick the squads for any series on the tour and neither has the Cricket Australia finalised any itinerary for the series. The long-awaited series between the sides will be kicking off with white-ball leg of the series followed by the Border-Gavaskar Trophy which will commence with a pink ball Test in Adelaide starting December 17. Virat Kohli had led the Indian ODIs, T20Is, and Test teams on the last tour of Australia where the men in blue had a fabulous season winning the one day series, drawing the T20 series triumphing in the Test series for the first time in the history of India’s tour to Australia.

IPL 2020 | MI vs KKR: Match Preview, Predicted XI & Dream11 Fantasy Picks

Mayank Kumar ∙ 15 Oct 2020

IPL 2020 | MI vs KKR: Match Preview, Predicted XI & Dream11 Fantasy Picks

As the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League is nearing its completion of one month, teams are stacking up against each other for round two of the clashes between them. In fans' and experts’ eyes, the fact that every team plays each other twice in the tournament and that provides teams with an opportunity to bounce back if they don’t make a good start. The Kolkata Knight Riders led by Dinesh Karthik will walk on the field with exactly the same objective against a Mumbai Indians that has truly looked like a side fitting for the tag of ‘4-time champions’. Mumbai will be hoping for consistency from the players and will try to keep up the momentum they have picked after the loss in the opening game of this season. Karthik’s Knight Riders have failed to click as a team and while the team has produced some stellar individual scores, it has not been able to match the challenges posed by the teams in good form this season. The men in purple and gold had started the season against the very Mumbai Indians side when Rohit Sharma had put on his full-throttle attack against the Kolkata bowling line-up. The team has bounced back from the first game on the back of a few strong performances but have looked unconvincing in several crunch moments in the game. In the last game against the Royal Challengers Bangalore, the team never looked in the race while chasing a mountain of 195 runs. A team that has a legacy of being strong on pitches that are slower and spinning, Kolkata failed miserably in the process of containing Bangalore’s batsmen. AB de Villiers powered the RCB with a 33-ball-73 while the KKR could manage a mere 112 and for once were staring at becoming the first side to be bowled out in the IPL 2020. The KKR think tank led by captain Dinesh Karthik and Brendon McCullum has not been able to think clearly on the role of players in the side. Earlier, Sunil Narine opened the batting with no good effect and the team held back a proven opener in Rahul Tripathi, at times playing him at 7 or 8. The team made a course correction and opened with Tripathi, but was dropped from the opening slot yet again after the Englishman Tom Banton was included in the squad. The team decided to tinker with a player who had shown signs of good form in Tripathi and again slotted him down the order at number 7 and he was of no use at that position. The team was missing the services of Sunil Narine, the mystery bowler who once used to own the stage of the IPL and now the team will miss him as a player in the first place with him being put on notice for illegal action. Narine has not been at his best but has helped the side win two very close encounters by bowling economic overs in the back end and his absence hurt the side in the last game against the RCB. On the contrary, the Mumbai Indians have to worry about other teams bouncing back to good form and it takes only a handful of matches to change the outlook of the points table. The good thing for the team is that captain Rohit Sharma is well aware of the other teams’ attempt to catch up and he has asked his team to refrain from being complacent. The core of Mumbai Indians is very experienced with the likes of Rohit Sharma, Kieron Pollard, Hardik Pandya have seen many moments of triumph in the IPL and they know enough about keeping things tight for not to slip away the momentum gained in the early phase of the tournament. The team has looked indispensable with dominating batsmen at all the positions right from the top order to the lower-middle order. The batting has dominated almost every attack they have come up against and in the last match against the Delhi Capitals, the side showed it can raise their game even from the current standards when the situation demands and convincingly defeated the Shreyas Iyer’s Capitals. On the bowling front, the trio of Trent Boult, James Pattinson, and Jasprit Bumrah has run circles around the batsmen in the ongoing season and it’s almost like they are saying if Boult does not get you, Pattinson will or if Bumrah does not get you, Boult will. Spinners Rahul Chahar and Krunal Pandya have chipped in brilliantly in the middle overs picking up crucial wickets and Rohit Sharma’s Mumbai Indians look like a well-oiled machine running on a highway and beating every team that has come its way. Mumbai Indians vs Kolkata Knight Riders: Match details Match Number- 32 Date: 15th October 2020, at 7:30 PM IST Venue: Abu Dhabi Pitch and weather conditions A new pitch will be used for the game between the Mumbai Indians and the Kolkata Knight Riders and new-ball bowlers on either side will look to make the most of the opportunity to move the new ball. The new ball has swung in Abu Dhabi and if there will be any chance of swing in the air on the night of the match, there is no one better than Trent Boult to find it and that will give the Mumbai an edge over the Kolkata Knight Riders that has shown signs of fragility at the top of the order. Captain winning the toss may face the dilemma of chasing but so far teams have struggled to chase in the tournament and it might be a good toss to lose in Abu Dhabi on Friday night. The weather will be on the cooler side with temperature in the sub 30 degrees range and the open stadium allowing the breeze to pass across it will make the conditions even more pleasant for the players in the field. Team News Mumbai Indians Rohit Sharma and Mahela Jayawardene have shown the mettle of being a tough think tank and backing their players to the hilt and there is no plausible reason for the team to chase the playing XI from the one that fielded in the game against the Delhi Capitals. Expected XI Quinton de Kock (wk), Rohit Sharma (c), Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard, Krunal Pandya, James Pattinson, Rahul Chahar, Trent Boult, Jasprit Bumrah Kolkata Knight Riders The KKR management has a lot to ponder upon the playing XI and they have their tasks cut out to field an eleven that can provide a balance to the side. The position the team finds itself in now, it can only go up and the team must find a way to back Kuldeep Yadav who has not been given enough chances this season. However, that seems unlikely looking at the way the KKR has managed the resources at their disposal. Rahul Tripathi must be brought back to open the innings and if Tom Banton has to play at the top of the order, Shubman Gill will be shifted to the number 3 position, but that seems unlikely given McCullum's confidence in the young Indian. Nitish Rana has not looked in his best touch and if the KKR decides to go aggressively like how it has been for McCullum in his playing days, Kuldeep Yadav may get a look in in the place of Nitish Rana with Gill slotting down to number three. Expected XI Tom Banton, Shubman Gill, Nitish Rana/Kuldeep Yadav, Eoin Morgan, Dinesh Karthik (c & wk), Andre Russell, Rahul Tripathi, Pat Cummins, Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Prasidh Krishna, Varun Chakravarthy Mumbai Indians vs Kolkata Knight Riders: Dream11 team and suggestion Rohit Sharma, Quinton de Kock, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Eoin Morgan, Rahul Tripathi, Kieron Pollard, Andre Russell, Trent Boult, Jasprit Bumrah, Kamlesh Nagarkoti Captain: Rohit Sharma Vice-captain: Eoin Morgan

India's tour of Australia is set to begin with white-ball series

Sayantan Bhattacharjee ∙ 15 Oct 2020

India's tour of Australia is set to begin with white-ball series

The much anticipated India’s tour of Australia, which is set to take place at the end of the year, will begin in white-ball series instead of the traditional 4-match Test series. "The tour will commence with a white-ball component before the four-Test series, at this stage, begins in Adelaide on December 17-21. Other venues include Melbourne (December 26-30), Sydney (January 7-11) and Brisbane (January 15-19)," says a report in The Australian. CA chief Earl Eddings has also recently stated that he is in constant touch with BCCI President Sourav Ganguly. Furthermore, he added that the Indian team will be coming to the tour and there are no questions about that. According to the report, Virat Kohli and Co. will land in Brisbane instead of Perth or Adelaide as earlier reported. The tourists are not going to face strictness in terms of quarantine protocols. Meanwhile, Australia Test skipper Tim Paine has shrugged off apprehension that Steven Smith and Pat Cummins would be under-cooked for the Test series due to their workload in the IPL. The likes of Smith, Cummins, James Pattinson, David Warner and Josh Hazlewood are taking part in the money-spinning event.
