James Pattinson, the fast bowler once regarded as a pure class made for Test cricket, delivered with the ball in the shortest format fr his team Melbourne Renegades. The Gades who finished last year at the bottom of the table got off to a winning start as they defeated Adelaide Strikers by two runs in a thrilling last over encounter at their home ground of Docklands. Pattinson, who was given the duty to defend nine off the last over bowled a brilliant one in which he did not concede any boundary and also removed Wes Agar. He gave away only six runs that came from three doubles on the last three balls, thereby winning the game for his team. Prior to Pattinson, Kane Richardson, the stand-in captain in place of Aaron Finch who missed this game due to injury, also bowled a good 19th over after English import Reece Topley had given away 15 in the 18th over to bring the equation down to 18 from the last two. Richardson got the wicket of dangerous-looking Daniel Worral and had given way just five runs before a boundary of the last ball made the match really interesting. The Strikers would not have been in such difficult conditions if they had converted a brilliant start. Matthew Short and Jake Weatherlad had taken the Strikers to 45 without loss in the first five overs. However, Zahir Khan planned differently and removed both the players in quick succession. The wicket of Weatherland though was more of fielder Jake Fraser-McGurk who caught a blinder at the boundary line. Harry Nielsen tried building partnerships with Jonny Wells and Ryan Gibson. While the former was removed by Zahir as his third scalp, Gibson was retired gurt after an ankle injury. Soon Nielsen was caught out off the bowling of Will Sutherland and Daniel Drew, who was playing his debut BBL game was left to try and win it for the Strikers with the tail. Rashid Khan tried to support him with a quickfire 11, but it wasn't enough as Drew himself wasn’t able to clear the field as frequently as was required. Earlier in the evening, after winning the toss and deciding to bat first, Renegades got off to a great start courtesy of Mackenzie Harvey and Sam Harper. The openers added 65 in only 8.4 overs before the stand was broken. While Harper made 33, Harvey went on to bring up his fifty and was supported well by James Seymour who made 23 off 14 balls. But after the fall of these three batters, the men in red lost the plot. None among the late hitters in Mohammad Nabi, Sutherland and Jonathan Merlo could build on to the platform given to them by the top order. In fact, Renegades lost six wickets in the last three overs and could make only 14 runs. If they had lost this game, those last three overs would have haunted them for sure.

Former Australia Test bowler James Pattinson, who is playing for Victoria in the ongoing Sheffield-Shield threw a very dangerous ball that hit New South Wales batter, Daniel Hughes. Pattinson picked up the ball on follow-through and hurled it straight back at Hughes after a frustrating phase of play. The red cherry went on to hit the batter on his feet and left him limping on one foot. Though Pattinson immediately apologised by raising his hands, it was termed dangerous by the match referee and therefore the bowler has been suspended for one match. Hughes, who was the only NSW batter standing in between Victoria and a win on the final day of the four-day game with his solid 89, had frustrated the Victorian attack with his staunch resistance. However, NSW lost the match by a huge margin of 174 runs. In a statement released on Wednesday morning, Cricket Australia said, "Pattinson was charged and found guilty under Article 2.7 of the Code for throwing a ball at or near a player in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during a match.” "Pattinson was fined 100 per cent of his match fee for the Marsh Sheffield Shield match between Victoria and NSW held on November 5-8, 2021,” it added. Along with the match fee penalty, the 31-year-old who recently retired from international cricket was also suspended for the day-night Marsh One-Day Cup match against NSW at the MCG on Friday.
James Pattinson concedes he couldn't push his body to carry on despite Pat Cummins' persuasion
When the Australian pacer James Pattinson announced retirement from Test cricket earlier last month, there was a sense of disappointment among his fans and people who have tracked his journey since his debut in 2011. However, the Victorian has a different perspective to his life as a Test career and instead of ruing not having a prolonged career, he is cherishing the fact that he played the longest format for his country and is thankful for the opportunity. Pattinson made his Test debut against New Zealand in 2011 at the Gabba and promised a long and successful career for Australia. However, recurrent injuries derailed his journey more often than not and he spent more time outside of the Test squad than playing the game, and hence he knew his time was up before quitting the longest format. He said that Pat Cummins, whom he rated as one of “closest mates” in the Australian team tried to persuade him to take back the retirement decision but he was aware of the fact that the “point where you try and push and you can't push anymore” has arrived for him. "I'm pretty close with Pat Cummins, probably one of my closest mates in the team, and I rang him before I did it and he said 'is there any way I can convince you to stay?'," Pattinson said. "I said, 'to be honest I've made the decision and I'm relieved, then he was just supportive of it and everyone else was as well. It's nice people want you around, but it's a decision I made with my family. It's nice to feel like you'll be missed,” Pattinson said. "You can say I should probably have played more Tests but I'm thankful to just have the opportunity to represent my country and I'd like to think every time I went out that I gave everything," he said. "I've broken my back about seven times to try and play for Australia so that's the toll it takes and there comes a point where you try and push and you can't push anymore. I probably wouldn't change a thing, it's been an amazing journey and now I can move on to the next stage and enjoy that as well.” Pattinson, along with Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins made their Test debut around the same time in the year 2011. Pattinson played his debut Test after only nine first-class matches while Cummins played his debut Test against South Africa in Johannesburg as an 18-year-old before not playing the format for a six-year-long gap. Pattinson conceded that he was pushed at the highest level before his body was matured for the workload it had to deal with and it could well have contributed to his back not strengthening enough to take the load with experience. He said that the Australian team have better management of pace bowlers now than they had at his time and called the handling of the fitness and workload of his mate Cummins as a “blueprint” on how to handle pacers. "I was put in the position where I was probably a little ahead of my body, being thrown into the Test arena and doing well. Went from not playing to being the lead bowler in four or five Tests. That was the hardest thing, obviously, my body wasn't ready for that. It has probably contributed to my back being the way it is,” Pattinson asserted. "They've changed the way they manage players a bit now," Pattinson said. "The way they've handled Pat Cummins is probably the blueprint for how you handle your bowlers. What they did for him is fantastic."

He has communicated his decision to the national selectors about his unavailability for the upcoming home season including an Ashes series. Pattinson’s career has gone through on and off path due to recurrent injuries and rising stocks of other pace bowlers in the Australian camp. Pattinson made his Test debut way back in 2011 against New Zealand in Brisbane and started his career on high against India later that summer. His last Test appearance too came against the Blackcaps in early 2020 at the Sydney Cricket Ground. In his 10-year long career, Pattinson has managed to play only 21 Tests where he has taken 81 wickets at 26.33 apiece and a strike rate of 48.90. Pattinson’s retirement from the format will contemplate the team management led by Justin Langer and Time Paine in case they will need to strengthen the pace department after the trio of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood.

Australia fast bowler James Pattinson has been ruled out of the third Test against India due to bruised ribs. The match is scheduled to take place in Sydney between 7-11. “Fast bowler James Pattinson has been ruled out of our Australian squad for the third #AUSvIND Vodafone Test with bruised ribs,” said Cricket Australia (CA). CA hasn’t yet announced the replacement for the fast bowler. “He will not be replaced in the squad and will be assessed further ahead of the Brisbane Test match,” CA added. He has taken 81 wickets in 21 outings for Australia at an average of 26.33 and last featured in a Test against New Zealand last January. In other developments in the squads for the teams, David Warner, Sean Abbott and Will Pucovski have been included in the team for Australia with Joe Burns missing out his place. The injury concerns for India have continued with fast bowler Umesh Yadav too out of the series after sustains calf injury. T.Natarajan who made his India debut in the limited-overs debut earlier on the tour has been included in the Test squad. Earlier, Mohammed Shami was also ruled out of the series after fracturing his arm. The Test series between the two sides is levelled at 1-1 with two games to go. Australia defeated India in the first Test by 8 wickets while the visitors bounced back in the second clash. The preparations for India’s tour of Australia following the IPL 2020 is underway in full swing and the test specialists such as Chetshwar Pujara and Hanuma Vihari are scheduled to reach in the United Emirates to assemble before a long list of players travel down under for full series comprising of three ODIs, three T20Is and four Tests. Narine has not been at his best but has helped the side win two very close encounters by bowling economic overs in the back end and his absence hurt the side in the last game against the RCB. On the contrary, the Mumbai Indians have to worry about other teams bouncing back to good form and it takes only a handful of matches to change the outlook of the points table. The good thing for the team is that captain Rohit Sharma is well aware of the other teams’ attempt to catch up and he has asked his team to refrain from being complacent. The core of Mumbai Indians is very experienced with the likes of Rohit Sharma, Kieron Pollard, Hardik Pandya have seen many moments of triumph in the IPL and they know enough about keeping things tight for not to slip away the momentum gained in the early phase of the tournament. India's tour of Australia is set to begin with white-ball series
The much anticipated India’s tour of Australia, which is set to take place at the end of the year, will begin in white-ball series instead of the traditional 4-match Test series. "The tour will commence with a white-ball component before the four-Test series, at this stage, begins in Adelaide on December 17-21. Other venues include Melbourne (December 26-30), Sydney (January 7-11) and Brisbane (January 15-19)," says a report in The Australian. CA chief Earl Eddings has also recently stated that he is in constant touch with BCCI President Sourav Ganguly. Furthermore, he added that the Indian team will be coming to the tour and there are no questions about that. According to the report, Virat Kohli and Co. will land in Brisbane instead of Perth or Adelaide as earlier reported. The tourists are not going to face strictness in terms of quarantine protocols. Meanwhile, Australia Test skipper Tim Paine has shrugged off apprehension that Steven Smith and Pat Cummins would be under-cooked for the Test series due to their workload in the IPL.
