BBL 11 | Xavier Bartlett’s scintillating showing with the ball takes Heat past Hurricanes

BBL 11 | Xavier Bartlett’s scintillating showing with the ball takes Heat past Hurricanes

On New Year’s day, Brisbane Heat registered their third victory in the Big Bash League 2021-22 as they defeated Hobart Hurricanes by 14 runs and to gain four crucial points and narrow the gap between themselves and fifth-placed Sydney Thunder who have 16 points. Xavier Bartlett was the hero with the ball for the Heat as he picked four wickets in the game and most importantly dismissed the two openers Matthew Wade and last game’s centurion Ben McDermott in his first over itself. From then on, it was a difficult task for the Hurricanes to chase down the target of 151 set up by the Heat. The fact that D’Arcy Short played slowly that even as he was the sixth man to get out, he could only manage to score 27 runs off 36 balls. The rest of the batters apart from Harry Brook didn’t do much either and had it not been for the unbeaten 33 from 20 balls by Tom Rogers, the Hurricanes might not have come even close to the total. Apart from Bartlett, Afghan spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman also picked three wickets and gave away only 20 runs to choke the Hurricanes’ run flow. Eventually, the hosts could get up to only 136-8 in their 20 overs. Earlier in the evening, after winning the toss and inviting Heat to bat first, Hurricanes had a great start as they sent all three top-order batters of the opposition back in the hut inside the powerplay itself. However, first Sam Heazlett (26) and later Jack Wildermuth (28) and James Bazley with his unbeaten 44 off 27 balls managed to get the blue brigade to a respectable total of 150-8. For Hurricanes, Nathan Ellis picked three wickets while Rogers picked two. Another game in the league between Melbourne Renegades and Sydney Sixers at the International Sports Stadium in Coffs Harbour was abandoned without a ball being bowled due to rain.

BBL 11 | Saqib Mahmood demolishes Heat on Big Bash debut

BBL 11 | Saqib Mahmood demolishes Heat on Big Bash debut

It was a dream Big Bash League debut for Englishman Saqib Mahmood as he destroyed the Brisbane Heat top order with his opening spell to hand his team Sydney Thunder an easy win in the 11th edition of the Australian premier T20 competition. Bowing his first over in his opening spell, Mahmood dismissed Chris Lynn and Ben Duckett in a span of just four balls to rock the Heat even before its chase of 197 really got underway. If that was to be seen as an anomaly and one-off experiences that a bowler on league debut picked two wickets in his first over, the Lancashire pacer made sure that it wasn’t anymore in his second over. In his second over and the innings’ third, the right arm pacer dismissed Sam Heazlett on the very first ball and, Max Bryant got run out on the second ball and then Mahmood removed skipper Jimmy Peirson on the fifth ball to sink Heat to the rock bottom. At the end of the third over, the team in ocean blue was under all sorts of trouble at 15-5 all thanks to the brilliant bowling from Mahmood. Thankfully a partnership developed between Tom Cooper and James Bazley and the duo steered Heat past the 50 run mark. However, spinners Chris Green and Tanveer Sangha removed both Cooper and Bazley in two consecutive overs to throw Heat under the rails at 60-7 where they were looking down at scoring their lowest ever BBL total in history. However, 79 runs stand for the eighth wicket, the highest ever in BBL history by Xavier Bartlett and Mark Steketee got the Brisbane side past 130. When the partnership was eventually broken at 139, Steketee was removed on 33 by Daniel Sams. The last two wickets fell in the next three balls as the team was all out on 143, losing the game by a huge margin of 53 runs. Bartlett who remained unbeaten on 42 was the top scorer for the Heat. Earlier in the evening, after winning the toss and asking thunder to bat first, Heat wasn’t really able to justify the call as Thunder openers Alex Hales and Matthew Gilkes got off to a decent start, putting on 55 for the first wicket within the powerplay. The batters to follow, Jason Sangha and Sam Billings too batted well with Billing going on to score a brilliant 64 off just 27 balls at a strike rate of more than 200. Thanks to those runs from the top four, Thunder scored 196-7 in their 20 overs. For Heat, Bartlett, Steketee and Mitchell Swepson picked two wickets each.

BBL 11 | Alex Ross, Daniel Sams, Sandhu shine in Thunder's win over Heat

BBL 11 | Alex Ross, Daniel Sams, Sandhu shine in Thunder's win over Heat

Alex Ross was at his very best with the bat as he guided Sydney Thunder to an easy seven-wicket win over Brisbane Heat in their opening clash of the Big Bahs League 2021. Ross’ unbeaten 61 off 46 balls combined with Sam Billings’ 45 not out and their 109 run partnership meant that Thunder chased down the total in the 18th over itself. This win with 17 balls remaining will give a boost to the net run rate of the Thunder which becomes crucial at later stages of the league. The chase of 141 did not start well for the Thunder who were playing at their home ground of Manuka oval. Alex Hales, the controversial import from England was removed on the second ball of the innings by Xavier Bartlett. Soon, Liam Guthrie, who was playing his first game for Heat, struck twice in one over to remove Matthew Gilkes and Sam Whiteman and force Thunder into a rebuilding phase. It was then that Billings combined with Ross and the duo finished the job at hand with much ease. Earlier in the evening, after winning the toss and deciding to field first, Nathan McAndrew gave a great start to the Thunder as he removed Max Bryant in the third over. Daniel Sams then removed Chris Lynn. Englishman Ben Duckett and Sam Heazlett then built a partnership of 83 runs in 66 balls and just when it seemed that they would tee off and get Heat to a respectable total past 160, Sams struck again and removed Heazlett. It was then the turn of Gurinder Sandhu as he removed two dangermen Duckett and Jack Wildermuth to push Heat into all sorts of trouble. If it weren’t for Bartlett’s late order hitting, where he made unbeaten 26 off 18 balls, getting to even 140 would have been mighty difficult.

Match Report: Heat continue streak, beat Stars in rain marred, thrilling encounter

Brisbane Heat continued their newly found winning streak at home as they beat Melbourne Stars by 18 runs (D/L Method) at the Carrara Oval to claim their third victory in a row. With this win, the Heat have now reached the fifth p[osition, just one point shy of the fourth spot, currently occupied by the Adelaide Strikers with 17 points. For Stars, it was another day of 'couldn't have won but didn’t' as they came in a touching distance with the help of some insane hitting by Nick Larkin at the end of the innings. With this loss, they have now moved to 6th place in the points table. The brilliant last over Prior to the last over, Larkin had 23 of a Lewis Gregory over and in this too, teh team Stars required 23 and Larkin got onto the strike with 22 needed off five balls. But credit must go to Xavier Bartlett who did not alter his line and outfoxed the batter. If not outfoxed, at least bowled in the areas where the bowl could not travel past the fielder and gave away just five runs. Although Larkin and Seb Gotch Larkin’s partner would think that they missed out on at least three sixes as three bowls were perfectly in the slot for being hit out of the ground. But in a match, there are always could haves and should-haves. The Larkinsanity After the loss of Glenn Maxwell’s wicket and that of Marcus Stoinis, it was assumed that the match was done and dusted. But Larkin, 30, held onto what is commonly described as hope and kept on smoking boundaries to keep his team in the hunt even till the last over. The New South Wales born hit 35 off 16 with two sixes and four boundaries in his account. Had he had a little bit of support from those who went out ahead of him, a different result might have been on the cards. Fielding level- Heat The Brisbane team saved at least 20 runs in the field apart from taking two sensational catches and presenting to the BBL, probably the save of the tournament so far by Max Bryant, who saved a certain six off the bowling of Gregory. Apart from that, another certain six was saved when Sp[iceman Fletcher hit a ball straight as an arrow of Mujeeb but that intercepted just ahead of the boundary by Xavier Bartlett and him along with his fast bowling partner Mark Steketee teamed up to not only save the six but also in also getting Spiceman out. Englishman Gregory pulled off a brilliantly judged catch of Nicholas Pooran near the boundary ropes. Lynnsanity at display Earlier in the day, Stars after winning the toss, invited to Heat to bat first and the response that Heat gave was like a fresh shower of rain washing up all the disappointment that might have crept up into the Heat fans due to the rain which halted the start of play and converted the game into a 17 over a team at first. By the time the second wave of rainfall started, Heat were 68-2 in just the sixth over, The two wickets also fell in quick succession as both Bryant and Joe Denly were cleaned up by Zampa off successive deliveries. Lynn after coming back from the break hit Maxwell for three consecutive boundaries. Just after that, another passing shower stopped the proceedings. The match was reduced to 10 overs before it began again from the eighth over and Maxwell got the opposition captain out with the first ball after the resumption. But before getting out, the 30-year-old Lynn had smoked 48 off just 23 deliveries including three fours and four sixes. Those who came after him i.e. Joe Burns and Lewis Gregory too continued from where he had left, taking the total to 115 in 10 overs, which was then increased to 130 due to the Duckworth Lewis system. While Burns made 22 off 11, Gregory made nine of three. What's Next? Heat, on a roll, would aim to continue it when they face the Sixers on Monday, where the Sixers would be looking to exact revenge for the last game’s loss. On the other hand, Stars would take on Strikers on Monday in what could be an exciting battle of the mid-table.

Match Preview: Distraught Heat face in-form Hurricanes in must-win game

Match Preview: Distraught Heat face in-form Hurricanes in must-win game

Brisbane Heat have lost all their matches so far in the 10th edition of the Big Bash League (BBL). The situation is likely to get tougher as they now will face the team which is sitting pretty close to the top of the standings currently - Hobart Hurricanes. What would make the match even tougher for the Brisbane side is the challenge of getting over the hearbreak they suffered in their last match - against Adelaide Strikers - where, after a splendid comeback from a hopeless situation, they ended up losing by just two runs. But that ins't all! Heat suffered another major setback in the lead up to the last game when their captain Chriss Lynn ended up hurting his hamstring. He had to miss that match and isn't likely to come back any time soon. The clash of these two teams - at the opposing ends of the points table - promises to be an exciting contest, despite the big discrepancy in their performances so far. Heat Looking to Get Off the Mark Brisbane Heat is lying at the bottom of the table as of now. If they have to keep their chances of qualifying for the playoffs alive, they have to start winning. However, as of now, they have several issues to sort out. Their batting is not firing and their best player in this department - captian Chris Lynn - is out as well. New captain Jimmy Peirson played an astonishing innings in the last match but he would need support from the top order. Nobody except Lynn and Peirson has got a good score under their belt this season. This has to change if Heat want to move up the ladder. Interestingly, Brisbane's bowling is looking good. Xavier Bartlett and Jack Wildermuth have both bowled reasonably well. Mark Steketee also hasn't been bad. Mujeeb-Ur-Rahman, who shone with the bat in the last game, is their trump card and could make the difference with the ball. Hurricanes Seek Perfection Despite being very close to the top of the table, Hobart Hurricanes have room for improvement. To begin with, their bowling is looking over-reliant on James Faulkner and Scott Boland. In fact, Boland has also discovered his form in the last two games. Nathan Ellis, who made a big impression last year hasn't shone in this season, so far, while Riley Meredith is also yet to have a good, decent set of figures under his belt in the current edition. South Africa's former international Johan Botha is in the squad but whether he plays or not depends on the conditions. However, with there not being much contribution from Ellis or Meredith, he might be picked ahead of them. West Indian Keemo Paul hasn't had a good start to the season. But having invested in him, the team is likely to persist with the pacer. The batting department gets a huge boost with the arrival of Dawid Malan - the best batsman in world T20I cricket presently, according to the rankings. With Colin Ingram, D'Arcy Short, and Ben McDermott already in good form, Malan's entry would make the batting even more strengthened. Hurricanes vs Heat: Match Details Venue: Gabba, Brisbane Date and Time: December 27, 1:45 PM IST, 7:15 PM Local, 8:15 AM GMT Broadcasters: Sony Sports Network, Sony LIV Pitch Report Brisbane is traditionally a venue providing assistance to pacers. However, in its first match of the season, both Danny Briggs and Rashid Khan looked deadly. This may suggest that either the surface is dry or slow. Johan Botha may be brought into the team by Hurricanes. Weather and Toss The skies are expected to be clear but with the occassional cloud making its way across. The temperatures would be around 22 degrees, making the evening comfortable for players. Toss would not be that important and won't be affected by weather. Probable XIs Brisbane Heat: Sam Heazlett, Max Bryant, Simon Milenko, Dan Lawrence, Jimmy Peirson (C and Wk), Tom Cooper, Jack Wildermuth, Mark Steketee, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Xavier Bartlett, Ben Laughlin Hobart Hurricanes: D'Arcy Short, Will Jacks, Ben McDermott (Wk), Dawid Malan, Peter Handscomb (C), Colin Ingram, Tim David, James Faulkner, Johan Botha, Keemo Paul, Scott Boland

BBL 10 | Heat vs Strikers: Adelaide hold nerve in a humdinger

Aryasekhar Chakraborty ∙ 23 Dec 2020

BBL 10 | Heat vs Strikers: Adelaide hold nerve in a humdinger

It turned out to be one of the most classic BBL matches and in the end, it was the Adelaide Strikers who scraped through and ended up winning the 13th match of the tournament by just 2 runs. Stand-in skipper for the Brisbane Heat, Jimmy Peirson played a stellar knock and almost snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. The Strikers after being put in to bat made a good recovery to post 152 on the board. The target looked way too much for the Heat after losing 8 wickets for just 68 runs but Peirson and Mujeeb brought them back into the game but couldn’t quite get them over the line in the end. Earlier in the day, it was Brisbane Heat designated skipper Chris Lynn who went for the toss and opted to field. However, he suffered a hamstring injury just minutes before the match and Jimmy Pierson was handed over the captaincy in his absence. The Strikers lost Jack Weatherald in the very first over and the Brisbane Heat bowlers never really allowed the batters to get under their skin in the first 5 overs. Philip Salt survived a few close shaves and went onto make 25 but the innings was scratchy and didn’t allow the Strikers to get after the bowlers. A partnership of 60 runs with Matt Renshaw meant that the Strikers had a launching pad for the final stretch of the innings but both Renshaw and Salt was dismissed in back to back deliveries by Mark Steketee which put the Strikers on the backfoot. Two new batsmen in and the pressure as well and truly on the Strikers but they did manage to eke out a few crucial partnerships which eventually helped them go past the 150 mark, Jonathan Wells looked in good touch and made good use of the power surge which the Strikers took in the 17th over. Two overs yielded 25 runs and it did help them gain some sort of momentum. Harry Neilsen also chipped in with a vital knock of 28 of 20 deliveries and struck some crisp boundaries during the course of his innings. However the Brisbane Heat bowlers never really allowed the Strikers to get away with the game and restricted them to 152. The pick of the bowlers for the Brisbane Heat was Xavier Bartlett who bowled good lines and bagged 3 wickets while Mark Steketee chipped in with a couple. The Brisbane Heat needed to get off to a good start and the Strikers needed some early wickets. Yet again the bowling department didn’t disappoint as the Strikers struck twice in the first 8 deliveries and things looked very difficult for the Heats from thereon. Daniel Worral and Danny Briggs bagged the two early wickets to put the Heats on the backfoot. After a brief partnership of 23 runs between Max Bryant and Daniel Lawrence, it was Rashid Khan who spun a web around the Heat batters and turned the game on its head. He bagged the wicket of Max Bryant in the very first delivery of his spell and followed it up with one more in the form of Lawrence in his very next over. From there on it was a mountain too steep to climb for the Heat. They kept losing wickets and it was the Strikers who looked like running away with the match. They were reduced to 68/8 and it looked all over for the Heat. Yet again there was an umpiring howler when Tom Cooper was adjudged LBW despite a clear under edge onto his pads. This has raised the debate yet again that whether DRS should be a part of every big tournament. However, what transpired next was something which no one would have predicted. No 10 Mujeeb ur Rahman suddenly turned the complexion of the game with some exceptional hitting in the 15th over of his fellow countryman Rashid Khan. The 20 runs over gave them some momentum to work with and skipper Jimmy Peirson grabbed that with both hands. He simply launched into the Strikers’ bowlers and kept plundering them for boundaries after boundaries. It was quite heartening to see the fact that the duo was still fighting from a hopeless situation. 51 runs came in just 14 deliveries and the match had turned on its head. However, the wickets column was the only bother for the Brisbane Heat. With 23 required of the last 3, Peter Siddle took the onus on himself and produced a magical over where he got the wicket of Mujeeb to again push the Brisbane Heat on the backfoot. Ben Laughlin played out a few overs and with Peirson on strike for the final over with 13 runs required the scales were slightly tilted in favour of the Heat especially due to the way he had batted in the last few overs. Eventually, his valiant effort wasn’t enough as the Heat fell short by just 2 runs
