Saurabh Tiwary, a left-handed batsman, who began playing cricket at the age of 11, represented Jharkhand at the under-14 level before making his first-class debut in the 2006-07 Ranji Trophy. Tiwary performed well for India U19 in the matches against South Africa and Bangladesh before making it into the squad for the U-19 World Cup in Malaysia.
The Jharkhand batsman had an underwhelming tournament but the Virat Kohli-led side went onto lift the U19 World Cup by defeating South Africa in a rain-hit final game.
Post the triumph, Tiwary was back to the grind and came up with three centuries in the 2009-10 Ranji season.
He has been a consistent performer in the domestic circuit scoring 6975 runs at an average of 47.12 in 100 first-class matches, while 3300 runs at an average of 47.14 in 92 list A matches.
The Jharkhand-born earned the national team call-up for the Asia Cup 2010 but didnāt get a chance to play. However, he got an opportunity against Australia in the same year and scored unbeaten 12 runs off 17 balls. A couple of months later, the batter snitched a match-winning partnership with Yusuf Pathan to pull off a thrilling win against New Zealand in December 2010. The next game at the Chepauk Stadium turned out to be his last appearance for India to date despite the above-mentioned performances in domestic cricket.
Meanwhile, Tiwary starred in the IPL pretty early on by bagging the āU-23 Player of the Tournament award in 2010 by scoring 419 runs in 16 matches for Mumbai Indians. After playing three seasons for Mumbai, he was acquired by Royal Challengers Bangalore. However, his time at RCB didnāt go well as he scored only 487 runs in 40 matches.
The batsman was picked by Delhi Daredevils in 2014. However, he got a chance to play in the 2015 season after being ruled out of IPL 7 due to an injury. In 2016, Tiwary was picked by the new franchise Rising Pune Supergiant for whom he scored 170 runs in seven innings.
The next year, the middle-order batsman was back with Mumbai Indians. He has been with the same franchise ever since except for the 2019 season.
The upcoming 2021 edition of the IPL will be his fourth stint with the IPL giants and at the age of 31, Saurabh Tiwary is way below his prime. If given opportunities by the selectors, he would be looking to make his mark on it with his power-hitting skills.
