Player Bio

Born in Chelsea, Middlesex, Gus Atkinson is England's latest fast-bowling sensation. Atkinson, a right-arm fast-medium quick and handy lower-order right-hand batter, has had an astonishing rise. He made his international debut at 25, during the Three Lions' home series against New Zealand in 2023.

Featuring in the ODIs and T20I series versus the BlackCaps, Atkinson stood out for his raw pace, which has been key to his quick ascent to the highest level after a breakthrough 2022-23 season. His exceptional performances in the inaugural International League T20 (ILT20) in the UAE and The Hundred in the UK caught the attention of the national selectors, and they deemed him fit for rigors at the international level.

Despite turning out in only four County Championship and six T20 Blast matches for Surrey last summer, Atkinson was roped in by Desert Vipers for ILT20 2022-23 on the back of his talent. The young speedster didn't disappoint, taking nine wickets in 10 outings at an encouraging economy of 7.81.

Fortuitously for Atkinson, the Vipers shared the same analytical team as the Oval Invincibles in The Men’s Hundred 2023, which paved the way for a path-breaking campaign in the popular tournament. The determined cricketer made waves with 10 scalps in six games in Invincibles' title-winning run.

Part of England's ODI World Cup 2023 squad eyeing the ultimate glory on the Indian shores, it begs belief that Atkinson progressed to the Surrey first XI in the County Championship only in 2020, and had to wait for another year to make his List A debut.

Atkinson earned a professional contract in 2017 after a string of impressive performances for Surrey's second XI team in the English summer of 2016. He managed to retain his spot in the side over the next two seasons without really threatening to break into the club's first-choice unit.

However, a fantastic century at No.7 against Worcestershire's second XI made his case strong. His bowling prowess and the mentioned knock allowed him to ultimately graduate to the senior domestic setup during early 2020.

Atkinson built on his gains and reputation by featuring in Surrey's push for the Championship this season with 13 wickets at 28.84, while bolstering his stocks as a dependable death-overs option for England at the World Cup in India.
