Player Bio

Right-arm off-break bowler and also a useful batter, Alex Thomson, features for Derbyshire in the County Cricket. In his teenage days, he was drawn to making a career in Physical Education, with his parents being PE teachers. However, Thompson changed his mind and focussed on cricket.

At the age of 19, Staffordshire-born returned from Australia after gaining work exposure and joined the Leek Cricket Club in 2013.

From 2014 to 2016, Thompson featured in six first-class matches for Cardiff MCC University. Then, the off-spinner was signed by Warwickshire County in 2017. In his T20 debut for Birmingham Bears against Lancashire in the 2018 edition of T20 Blast, the spinner finished with his best figures of 4/35.

In 2021, Durham signed Thompson for a two-month loan but failed to get an opportunity. Then, in the middle of the season, Derbyshire availed his services for a couple of years, which guaranteed him a place across all the formats of the game. The 28-year-old scalped seven wickets in four appearances and scored 65 runs in the County Championship Division Two.

Impressed by the performance of Thompson, the Derbyshire team management has provided him with the opportunity in every game as a first-choice spinner. In 4 matches, the all-rounder has garnered 118 runs and has a total of 9 wickets to his name.
