Player Bio

An English batsman with power, poise and refreshing confidence against spin, Alex Wakely is a professional cricketer for the Steelbacks. Wakely is the latest in a long line of cricketers from Bedfordshire to end up at Wantage Road.

Wakely was given the honour of taking on the white ball captaincy at just 24 years of age and helping guide the Steelbacks to three T20 Finals Days in four years, taking home the trophy on two occasions. County captaincy seemed in no doubt for someone who was appointed England’s captain for the 2008 Under-19 World Cup.

Wakely made history in 2016 by becoming the first County skipper to lift TWO major one-day trophies when the Steelbacks were crowned T20 Blast champions again. Three years later, Wakely stepped down from the captaincy to focus on his batting and scored at an average of 36 in the 2019 Championship season adding a century to his name against Worcestershire.

A loyal servant to the Northants, Wakely has scored over 11000 domestic runs in a career spanning over 13 years which included 7000 first-class for Northamptonshire in the last decade.
