Player Bio

A former winner of the Adam Gilchrist scholarship, Sammy-Jo Johnson is an Australian cricketer who plays as an all-rounder for Sydney Thunder in the WBBL.

A right-arm medium-pace bowler and a useful lower-order batter, Jo Johnson played for the Queensland Fire between 2011-20 before joining the NSW Breakers ahead of the 2020-21 season.

In 2010, Jo Johnson became just the second female player to receive the prestigious Adam Gilchrist scholarship, through which she travelled to the UK to play for the Cumbria Women’s team. That stint in the UK nurtured her skills and she became a better player. Over the five months of her scholarship, Jo Johnson made a name for herself and bagged more than 60 wickets and nearly registered 1000 runs. However, despite playing so well, she couldn’t break into the playing XI of the NSW Breakers.

Jo Johnson was a part of the Brisbane Heat squad in the WBBL but has moved to the Sydney Thunder ahead of the 2020-21 season.

Arguably one of the most talented female cricketers to have come out of the Queensland Fire side, Jo Johnson can consider herself unlucky as she has still not played for the Australia Women’s team. Their squad is stacked from top to bottom and Jo Johnson just break into that star-studded side.
