BBL 11 | English players to leave early, teams search for combination as a consequence

Six English players of five major Big Bash League teams would be departing before January 07 as they will have to prepare at home to leave for the West Indies tour which begins on January 22. The six players are Sam Billings, Saqib Mahmood, George Garton, Tymal Mills, Reece Topley and James Vince who will be flying out with England's T20I squad to Barbados on January 15. They will take part in a five-match series that the Windies will host after their assignment with Ireland gets over. None of the England Test squad members who are currently in Australia for the Ashes series is part of the team that would be travelling to the West Indies. Assistant coach Paul Collingwood, who left Australia prior to Christmas, will stand in for the T20I portion of the Caribbean tour. While Thunder have signed Mohammad Hasnain to cover up for the loss of Mahmood, the Sixers have also roped in Pakistan all-rounder Shadab Khan as a replacement to Vince. Other teams such as Adelaide Strikers (Garton), Melbourne Renegades (Topley) and Perth Scorchers (Mills) are still in search of a perfect replacement which is hard to find given the rise in Covid-19 cases and subsequently the toughness of the quarantine.

It was a phenomenal display of batting from Jason Sangha at the Adelaide Oval as he struck a match-winning 91* to lead his team Sydney Thunder to a victory over hosts Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League 2021. A match which was played under the fear of Covid-19 and chances of whose happening were very unreal at the start of the day came alive from the batting of the former Australia Under-19 star. Courtesy of Snagha’s brilliant innings in which he hit six fours and six sixes, the Thunder were able to post a huge score of 187-3 in their 20 overs. Apart from Sangha, Ben Cutting, Matthew Gilkes and Sam Billings scored 13, 37 and 18 respectively while Oliver Davies reined unbeaten on 26 off just 12 balls and built an 89 run partnership with Sangha which came off just 40 balls. The Strikers bowlers did not have any clue in the death overs as Sangha and Davies took them apart. The spinners Fawad Ahmed and Rashid Khan were quite economical though, ending their four spells at 0-22 and 1-23 respectively. Chasing the target was always going to be tough for the South Australian side even though they were batting at their home ground and bove that, they lost their first wicket in the fourth over itself. However, even after the fall of Matthew Short’s wicket, Matt Renshaw and Jake Weatherald built a 69 run stand in just 48 balls and just when it seemed like the chase was on, Saqib Mahmood struck and got rid of Renshaw. In the very next over, Daniel Sams removed Weatherlad and the story was back to nought for the Strikers. Jonathan Wells tried his best with his 48 off 26 balls, but it wasn’t enough as his team could make only 165-7 in their 20 overs. In total, Sams took four wickets. With this, the Thunder registered a healthy win by 22 runs and consolidated their fourth position on the points table.

BBL 11 | Saqib Mahmood demolishes Heat on Big Bash debut

It was a dream Big Bash League debut for Englishman Saqib Mahmood as he destroyed the Brisbane Heat top order with his opening spell to hand his team Sydney Thunder an easy win in the 11th edition of the Australian premier T20 competition. Bowing his first over in his opening spell, Mahmood dismissed Chris Lynn and Ben Duckett in a span of just four balls to rock the Heat even before its chase of 197 really got underway. If that was to be seen as an anomaly and one-off experiences that a bowler on league debut picked two wickets in his first over, the Lancashire pacer made sure that it wasn’t anymore in his second over. In his second over and the innings’ third, the right arm pacer dismissed Sam Heazlett on the very first ball and, Max Bryant got run out on the second ball and then Mahmood removed skipper Jimmy Peirson on the fifth ball to sink Heat to the rock bottom. At the end of the third over, the team in ocean blue was under all sorts of trouble at 15-5 all thanks to the brilliant bowling from Mahmood. Thankfully a partnership developed between Tom Cooper and James Bazley and the duo steered Heat past the 50 run mark. However, spinners Chris Green and Tanveer Sangha removed both Cooper and Bazley in two consecutive overs to throw Heat under the rails at 60-7 where they were looking down at scoring their lowest ever BBL total in history. However, 79 runs stand for the eighth wicket, the highest ever in BBL history by Xavier Bartlett and Mark Steketee got the Brisbane side past 130. When the partnership was eventually broken at 139, Steketee was removed on 33 by Daniel Sams. The last two wickets fell in the next three balls as the team was all out on 143, losing the game by a huge margin of 53 runs. Bartlett who remained unbeaten on 42 was the top scorer for the Heat. Earlier in the evening, after winning the toss and asking thunder to bat first, Heat wasn’t really able to justify the call as Thunder openers Alex Hales and Matthew Gilkes got off to a decent start, putting on 55 for the first wicket within the powerplay. The batters to follow, Jason Sangha and Sam Billings too batted well with Billing going on to score a brilliant 64 off just 27 balls at a strike rate of more than 200. Thanks to those runs from the top four, Thunder scored 196-7 in their 20 overs. For Heat, Bartlett, Steketee and Mitchell Swepson picked two wickets each.

Dom Sibley included in Lions squad for Australia tour

Dom Sibley, Matt Parkinson and Saqib Mahmood have been named in the 14-man England Lions squad that will travel to Australia next month. The Lions will provide the Joe Root-led side with opposition for the warm-up matches ahead of the first Ashes Test at Gabba and will also play a four-day tour match against Australia ‘A’. The Lions would be travelling overseas for the first time in almost two years as they last visited Australia back at the start of 2020. Sibley was dropped from the England squad after the second Test match against India at home and was replaced by Haseeb Hameed. There has been an uproar in the English media about the unconventional techniques of their batsmen, something that led to Sibely's departure from the India series. He was further dropped from the Ashes line-up as well. Parkinson and Mahmood on the other hand, have been picked after the two players were among wickets recently. Leg-spinner Parkinson picked up a total of 36 wickets in the Championship for Lancashire while Mahmood had impressed everyone during the ODI series against Pakistan and had also returned with 28 Championship scalps for Red Rose county in the eight matches that he featured in. The selectors didn’t include Liam Livingstone as he has had a hectic year and would want to spend some time at home. The squad will leave for Australia on November 4 along with the English team that will play the Ashes series. The Lion’s coaching staff and the captain are yet to be announced. England call upon Chris Woakes, Sam Billings as Jos Buttler and Saqib Mahmood are released

The England coach Chris Silverwood announced the Men’s squad for the fourth England-India Test at Oval starting Thursday, 02nd September. Chris Woakes, who had been out of the squad after the New Zealand series in early June and bowled well in the T20 Blast for his side Birmingham Bears makes a return to the side. “It is very pleasing that we have Chris Woakes returning to the Test squad. He has bowled well over the past week with Warwickshire without any real concerns with his heel injury. He is an asset we have been missing both with the ball and his ability to score runs in the middle order,” Silverwood said in a press release of England and Wales Cricket Board. Along with Woakes, Kent star Sam Billings has also been called upon as reserved wicketkeeper. “He understands how we want to approach our cricket and is a popular member of the group. He will fit in well with the rest of the group,” Silverwood said about Billings’ arrival in the squad. Saqib Mahmood, who was called in after Stuart Broad was injured has been released from the squad to join his side Lanachsire in their quest for a County championship title as they start their Division 1 journey from August 30. wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler has also been released to be with his family during his wife’s impending delivery for their second child in September. In Buttler’s absence, Bairstow will take the gloves while Billings would remain the reserve wicketkeeper. “We would like to wish Jos (Buttler) and his family all the very best for the impending birth of their second child. Unfortunately, he will miss this Test. Jonny Bairstow will take over wicketkeeping duties,” the England coach said. Earlier in the day, Silverwood had already announced that Mark Wood, who got injured during the second Test at Lord’s was available for selection. With the series level at 1-1 and Oval being a spin-friendly condition, the Indian team wouldn’t be an easy pass for England whatsoever. But with bowling stocks intact, they would look to make the most of it. Yorkshire man Dawid Malan was called to replace Dom Sibley in the third Test of ongoing England vs India five-match Test series. England captain Joe Root has shown confidence in the selection saying that the experience of Malan in under pressure situation would help the team. "Dawid would obviously offer us a lot of experience in that top three. Not necessarily… in Test cricket but he has played a huge amount of international cricket now and dealt with pressure situations,” Root said in the pre-match press conference at Headingley, Leeds. Sibley was removed from the squad after poor performances in back-to-back four Tests, two in this series and two against New Zealand. Although Malan has a modest average of around 27 in Tests, Root has backed him to do well seeing his pedigree of delivering under pressure. "He's played a lot of red-ball cricket over the course of his career and he's also had great success. He's played in a massive series in Australia away (2017 Ashes, where Malan also scored a hundred at Perth) and been our leading run-scorer out there, so we know that he's capable of big things in Test match cricket,” said Root, who is also a Yorkshire compatriot of Malan. The 33-year-old left-hander has a First-Class average of nearly 40 across 192 games and more than 11,000 runs playing in England and South Africa. His recent 199 vs Sussex in County Championship in the only long format game he played this season, brought him into consideration for the role at number three. "He's coming off the back - it's only one score in County Championship cricket but it's a big one (199 for Yorkshire vs Sussex) as well as some brilliant scores in high-pressure cricket in the shorter format too,” said the English skipper about Malan. Wood being ruled out from the third Test means that Saqib Mahmood is primed for a Test debut and Root has all his beliefs intact in him that the Lancashire man will exceed all expectations. "I feel like Saqib couldn't be in a better place to potentially play Test cricket. You look at how he's progressed over the last couple of years, across all the formats. The opportunities he's taken this year, when he's been given them, he's been exceptional,” said Root. The words of the captain have weight in them as the right-arm quick picked up 23 wickets in six games at 21 runs per wicket. After getting his chance in the limited-overs series against Pakistan, he was excellent with the ball and thus him getting the chance over Craig Overton shouldn’t be a big surprise. "It just shows how far he's come and it's great to see that strength in depth and him developing as he has done over a period of time now,” Root said about Saqib Mahmood. The third Test begins from August 25 in Leeds with India leading the series 1-0 so far.
