T10 League 2021-22: A look at the squads
The T10 league 2021-22 is slated to begin on Friday (November 19) with Northern Warriors taking on Delhi Bulls in the first match of the day in Abu Dhabi and this will be followed by the clash between Team Abu Dhabi and Bangla Tigers at the same venue. The tournament will also have some former India cricketers featuring in it. The likes of Yusuf Pathan, Munaf Patel, Abhimanyu Mithun will be a part of their respective sides. Paddy Upton recalls MS Dhoni - Gary Kirsten partnership that won India World Cup in 2011
Today is the 10th anniversary of India’s memorable World Cup win in 2011 and the team’s then strength and conditioning coach Paddy Upton still has fond memories of how things unfolded on the night of April 2, at the Wankhede Stadium. Upton recalls that Dhoni, who has had the habit of sitting inside the well-glassed dressing room and not in front of the dressing room, knocked the glass separating him and the coach Gary Kirsten. It was a sign language conversion between the ‘leaders of the team who were on the same page’ as Kirtsne nodded in his agreement for Dhoni’s decision to bat ahead of Yuvraj Singh. Upton recalls his own feeling and intuitions when Dhoni was walking downstairs to bat at the number four position. In a column written for The Indian Express, Upton revealed how he had asked Gary Kirsten if he has any sense of what was to come at the end of the game. “Gary didn’t have to stand up and have a conversation with Dhoni to discuss the merits and demerits of the move. It was just the two leaders of the team being on the same page. The knock on the glass, him pointing to himself, Gary’s nod… and it was done. I do remember very clearly when Dhoni walked down the stairs, I turned to Gary and said “Do you realise Dhoni is going there to fetch us the World Cup?” I had absolute conviction that Dhoni would come back with the trophy,” Upton wrote in his column.
Sachin Tendulkar hospitalised due to Covid-19; wishes fans on anniversary of World Cup triumph
Indian batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar has been hospitalized after testing positive for the novel Coronavirus infection a few days back. Tendulkar tweeted the development expressing hope of his return from the hospital very soon. He also extended congratulations to his countrymen and fans on the 10th anniversary of India’s second World Cup win in 2011. Notably, Tendulkar has returned from the Road Safety World Series where he was the skipper of the champion Indian Legends team. He was the first player to have tested positive for the virus and then others players such as Yusuf Pathan, S Badrinath, Irfan Pathan have also returned positive for the contagious virus. On the other hand, today marks a complete decade of India’s World Cup win in 2011 under the leadership of MS Dhoni. Winning the world cup was the only big elusive thing for Tendulkar for a long time. He had featured in five world cups before the 2011 edition which was always supposed to be the last one in his career. Thankfully for him and the whole of India, the team rose to the occasion and won the glittering trophy to give a perfectly fitting tribute to Tendulkar on April 2, 2011.
Chris Gayle to miss the Lankan Premier League
In what is turning out to be disastrous for the Lankan Premier League, charismatic Caribbean opener Chris Gayle has pulled out of the tournament. He was slated to play for the Kandy Tuskers which is owned by the family of Bollywood superstar Salman Khan. The franchise has confirmed about this development and as per reports in the InsideSport, it is learnt that Gayle withdrew his name from the tournament as commercial understanding with the organizers couldn’t be made. Taking to their Twitter handle, the Kandy Tuskers wrote, “We are sad to announce that Chris Gayle will not be playing for us in this year’s @LPLT20.” Gayle was expected to be part of the squad alongside some stalwarts of the game including the likes of Irfan Pathan, Munaf Patel, Kusal Mendis and Liam Plunkett. Meanwhile, the tournament has been running into several off-field issues from the last few days. With just a week left for the tournament to commence, the withdrawal of Gayle will be massive considering the fan base of the “Universe Boss”. Meanwhile, former Pakistan skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed also pulled out of the tournament yesterday. He was slated to ply his trade for the Galle Gladiators but now will be unavailable due to international commitments. Unlike the four other teams in the tournament who are already in Hambantota in a bio-secure bubble, Galle Gladiators is yet to reach the island nation. Not only Sarfaraz but his national teammate Wahab Riaz is also expected to pull out of the tournament alongside England all-rounder Liam Plunkett. Meanwhile, doubts have also been raised surrounding the participation of Lasith Malinga. It is learnt that the Lankan T20I skipper is in a dilemma whether to take part in the tournament or not. Reports in the ESPN Cricinfo also states that the franchise owners are not happy with the developments and feels that the organization of the tournament has been “chaotic” with less than 10 days to go into the tournament. Despite all these latest developments and issues being raised on the Player payments and contracts, Sri Lanka Cricket is still confident off pulling off this tournament. “Player contracts have been delivered, and they will have to come back to us with their lawyers and all that,” LPL director Ravin Wickramaratne was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo. “There have been issues with transferring money. We’ll talk to franchisees when they arrive. Before the tournament starts they will have to pay 40% to the players.”
LPL 2020: Munaf Patel signed by Sohail Khan owned Kandy Tuskers
The Lankan Premier League, the premier tournament of Sri Lanka confirmed on Tuesday, November 17th that the former India fast bowler, Munaf Patel, has signed up for the Kandy Tuskers franchise in the league. Munaf, 37, was part of a World Cup-winning Indian team that had defeated Sri Lank in the final of the 2011 World Cup to lift the trophy. In that tournament, the Baroda player had picked 11 wickets and was the third-highest Indian wicket-taker behind Zaheer Khan and Yuvraj Singh. Munaf will join the likes of Irfan Pathan, Kusal Perera, Chris Gayle, and Sohail Tanvir in the Kandy Tuskers team which would face up against four other franchises in the form of Colombo Kings, Galle Gladiators, Dambulla Vikings, and Jaffna Stallions. The franchise is owned by actor Salman Khan's brother Sohail Khan and will be coached by Hashan Tillakaratne. Other Indians in the tournament include KKR fame Manvinder Bisla and CSK fame Manpreet Gony. And apart from Kandy another team that is owned by an Indians Dmabulla Vikings which has actor Sachin Joshi as its owner. The league which has already been postponed twice due to covid-19 since its announcement will finally hit the road on November 26 with Colombo Kings taking on Kandy Tuskers at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium in Hambantota. With doubleheader fixtures, every day, the duration of the most awaited Lankan product has been shortened to just 20 days. The semifinals would take place on 13th and 14t December and the finals on 16th. All the matches would be played at the same venue.
