Player Bio

South Africa always produce fiery pacers, and there is no doubt that they get the ball to bounce, given that they grow up on bouncy surfaces. Nandre Burger is an emerging South African pace-bowling sensation. He is a left-arm fast bowler.

Hailing from Krugesdrop, Gauteng, Burger was more interested in tennis than cricket in his teen years. He idolised Roger Federer and aimed to become a tennis star one day. However, back spasms derailed his career trajectory at the age of 15, forcing the start of his love for cricket.

While Burger was studying sports psychology at the University of Witwatersrand, the cricket coach there, Neil Levenson, saw a future South Africa pacer in Burger as he saw him bowl in a net session.

Starting as a medium-pacer, Burger was helped by Levenson in increasing his bowling speed, which now goes up to 150 kmph.

He made his First-Class debut for Gauteng versus South Western Districts in February 2016, starting off brilliantly with his three-wicket outing in the first innings.

A few days later, he made his maiden T20 appearance in the CSA Provincial T20 Challenge 2015-16.

He made his List-A debut in the CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge 2016-17 and became the top wicket-taker with 19 scalps in the next season of the tournament. He was also the highest wicket-taker in the Africa T20 Cup 2018, with 11 dismissals.

The left-armer was included in the South Africa squad for the 2021 series against Pakistan but did not receive an opportunity to make his international debut.

After representing Joburg Super Kings in the inaugural edition of SA20, he played for Jaffna Kings in the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2023.

Leading the wicket-taking charts in the CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge 2023, Burger received his South Africa cap in all formats against India in December 2023. His best came in his debut Test, where he dismantled the mighty Indian batting line-up in both innings, ending the match with combined figures of 7-83.

In what was a dream month of December for the Protea, he also received his maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) contract as Rajasthan Royals snapped him up for INR 50 lakh in the auction. However, he had an average SA20 2024, snapping only 11 wickets in 10 innings, with his best performance coming against Paarl Royals in Eliminator, where he grabbed 3 scalps and got his franchise a place in Qualifier-2.
