Player Bio

Nasser Hussain OBE is a former England captain and a prolific batter. He played in 96 Tests and 88 ODIs.

Hussain impressed the selectors by scoring 990 runs in the 1989 edition of the County Championship for Essex.

The right-handed batter made his ODI debut against Pakistan in the MRF World Series in October 1989.

A couple of months later, he featured in his maiden Test match against the West Indies in 1990. However, injury concerns kept Hussain out for more than three years.

On his return to red-ball cricket, the stylish batter returned with innings of 71 and 47* against Australia in June 1993.

In June 1996, Hussain hit his first red-ball century against India. His knock of 128 helped England secure an easy victory.

June 1997 witnessed Hussain playing magnificent innings of 207 against Australia.

Hussain took over the reins from Alec Stewart as a captain of England in red-ball cricket in 1999. He had already been donning the role of ODI captain since 1997.

In 56 ODI games, Hussain led the Three Lions to victories in 28 of them. On the other hand, the proactive leader tasted success in 17 out of 45 Tests.

The Finals of the 2002 edition of the Natwest Series witnessed the middle-order batter registering his career-best ODI score of 115 against India at Lord’s.

Essex batter last featured for England in 2004 against New Zealand. He amassed a total of 8096 runs across both formats.

Since his retirement, he has often been seen as a commentator in almost all bilateral series of England and the ICC events.

Hussain was awarded The Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his service to Cricket in 2002.
