Former New Zealand all-rounder Chris Cairns is paralysed in his legs after suffering a stroke in his spine according to a Stuff.co.nz report. "During the life saving emergency heart surgery Chris underwent in Sydney he suffered a stroke in his spine. This has resulted in paralysis in his legs,” Cairns' lawyer Aaron Lloyd said in a statement on Friday. "As a result he will be undertaking a significant rehabilitation process at a specialist spinal hospital in Australia. Chris and his family remain appreciative of the immense public support as they deal with this difficult time,” the statement added. Cairns had undergone a surgery after a "major medical event" earlier this month in Canberra where he lives with his family now but had to be shifted to St Vincent's for another operation. The former right-handed cricketer was taken off life support last week. The all-rounder was capped 62 times in Tests, 215 times in ODIs and also played a couple of T20Is in his career. The right-hander notched up over 3300 runs and scalped 218 wickets in Test cricket. He scored 4950 runs and picked up 201 wickets in ODIs. Cairns played a crucial role in New Zealand’s winning triumph during the ICC Knockout tournament back in 2000 where the Blackcaps defeated India in the final to lift the trophy.

Former New Zealand all-rounder Chris Cairns has been taken off life support. Cairns had undergone second emergency surgery in Sydney for a heart problem and is now recovering. Cairns’ lawyer Aaron Lloyd said in a statement that the former cricketer has been taken off life support. "I'm pleased to advise that Chris is off life support and has been able to communicate with his family from hospital in Sydney," Aaron Lloyd, Cairns's lawyer, said in a statement. The right-handed cricketer had undergone a major heart surgery in Canberra earlier this month and was in the ICU under observation. "He and his family are thankful for all of the support and well wishes from everyone, and for the privacy they have been afforded. They request this continue as they focus on his recovery moving forward," Lloyd's statement read. Cairns was capped 62 times in Tests and 215 times in ODIs and also played a couple of T20Is for New Zealand. In 62 Test matches that Cairns played, he scored over 3000 runs and picked up 218 wickets while notching up 4950 runs in the ODIs along with 201 wickets. The right-hander was an integral part of the Blackcaps setup that won the ICC Knockout trophy after beating India in the final back in 2000. Cairns in fact scored a ton in that match to help his side chase down a target of 265 runs in Nairobi.

The former captain is said to have reached this condition after a failure in one of his medical emergency operations last week. “It is understood Cairns suffered a major medical emergency - an aortic dissection - in Canberra last week. This is when a tear occurs in the inner layer of the body's main artery,” New Zealand Herald reported. Fans and Cairns’ former teammates are praying for a speedy recovery of the legend who played 62 Tests, 215 One Day Internationals and two T20Is for New Zealand between 1989 and 2006. The 51-year-old was alleged of match-fixing twice after his retirement, once by Lalit Modi, the former IPL boss and once by his former teammates Lou Vincent and Brendon McCullum and by 2015, he came out clean of both those allegations, but it broke him from within and as a result he was living in Canberra a life away from cricket with his family.
