Player Bio

Hailing from Dhaka, Javed Omar is a former Bangladeshi cricketer and one of the most dependable batsmen for the Tigers. In his early teens, he toured England during the summer of 1989 with the Bangladesh U-19 side and played in the U-19 Asia Cup in Bangladesh.

Predominantly a red-ball cricketer, Omar was mainly involved with one-day cricket while Javed’s batting technique was always more suitable for the longer version. He finally earned a chance to wear the national colors on April 5th, 1995 against India in the Asia Cup but it was a forgettable one as he was run-out on 18 runs.

On his Test debut in April 2001, he scored 85 unbeaten becoming only the third player in history to achieve this on debut. The opener was the first batsman in the new millennium to carry his bat through entire Test innings in Bangladesh’s first Test match ever.

After a few low scores in the longest format, he was on the verge of being dropped and went on to score his maiden international century against Pakistan in 2003, which gave Bangladesh their first first-innings lead in Tests.

He played his last first-class match in December 2011 but retired from all forms of cricket after a friendly domestic match on January 3rd, 2014.
