Player Bio

A tall ferocious fast bowler, Sajid Mahmood is a former English cricketer of Pakistani descent. Hailing from Bolton, Mahmood joined Lancashire on a scholarship at the age of 20.

Despite only having six first-class wickets, he was selected for the England A squad to tour Indian and Malaysia. Mahmood broke into the international scene in 2004 when he made his debut against New Zealand on June 24th, 2004 at Old Trafford. Unfortunately, the match was abandoned without a single ball bowled.

Inconsistency at the international level saw him in and out of the squad on multiple occasions. Sajid came into highlight after injuring his fellow teammate, Andrew Flintoff in the nets which kept him out of action for several months. Mahmood announced himself in Test cricket by striking three wickets against Sri Lanka which included the priceless wicket of Kumar Sangakkara.

Lack of confidence and consistency hampered his selection in the playing XI but he made a comeback in the limited-overs squad against the Proteas in 2009 and a horrific display of bowling ended his career and never caught the sight of selectors again.

Mahmood continued to play for Lancashire in the domestic circuit until 2013 when he decided to move to Essex on a loan spell. With age not on his side, Mahmood’s pace went down and he started doubting himself. He played his last game for Essex in August 2014 and the end of his loan spell brought an end to his domestic career.
