Darren Maddy had a great domestic career but the right-handed batsman couldn’t replicate that form at the international level. After a string of strong performances for Leicestershire in the 1996 and 1998 County seasons, Maddy earned his maiden England call-up in the ODI side in 1998.
He made his ODI debut against South Africa at the Oval and was relatively unimpressive with the bat, scoring just 1 run.
The following year Maddy made his Test debut against New Zealand. But just like his ODI debut, Maddy struggled in his very first Test match against a quality Kiwi pace attack.
He had his ups and downs at the international stage and was given another chance to impress the selectors when the Leicester born was included in the England squad for the 2007 ICC World T20. The vibrant stroke-maker had a decent tournament, amassing 113 runs in four matches, including a half-century against the Black Caps.
Post the 2007 World Cup, Maddy went back to the domestic circuit and continued to perform heavily for Warwickshire.
A talented cricketer, Maddy had his international career cut short due to his inability to perform on the big stage. He was a great timer of the ball who failed to perform at the international level.
