Narsingh Deonarine

Narsingh Deonarine hailed from Guyana, following the footsteps of Shivnarine Chanderpaul, modelled his batting after his idol. As the veteran, Deonarine might not have been the most elegant-looking batsman but he was one of the grittiest batters of his generation. However, he couldn’t replicate his potential or consistency on the international stage. Apart from being a middle-order bat, he was an off-spinner known for being a partnership breaker and also a steady fielder. 

After debuting for Guyana in 2000 and captaining West Indies Under-19 in 2002, Deonarine made his way to the highest stage in 2005, during the controversial contract dispute between players and board. On debut against South Africa, he got the best seat on the ground and saw his idol get to 204*. But unfortunately for Deonarine, when the dispute was resolved, he had to find his way out of the West Indies team. 

Deonarine remained on the fringes of selection but remained out of the team. Although he was the leading run-getter in the 2008-09 season where the Guyana-born scored a total of 1068 runs in the tournament. He then made a return to the national side to score his highest Test score of 82 against Australia at Perth. The following year, the southpaw registered his highest ODI score of 65* against Zimbabwe. 

After being in and out, Deonarine established himself in the West Indies middle-order and represented them regularly throughout the 2012-13 season. However, he played his last game for West Indies in 2015, before he was sidelined by the selectors due to his inconsistency. Deonarine played his last domestic season for Trinidad and Tobago before he signed a deal to play for the USA in 2021.
