BBL 11 | Steve O'Keefe, Henriques lead Sixers to derby win over Thunder
After losing to back to back games, Sydney Sixers bounced back in a similar fashion as they beat cross-town rivals Sydney Thunder in the derby clash at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday, January 15th. The charge was led by three of the most experienced players in the Sixers unit, skipper Moises Henriques, vice-captain Danie Hughes and spinner Steve O'Keefe as they dismantled the second-placed Thunder and registered a huge win by 60 runs. The Thunder, which won the toss and decided to field first was set a grand target of 198 to chase by the Sixers. It wasn’t going to be an easy chase but the fact that Thunder kept on losing wickets at the regular intervals made it even tougher. At one point in time, The Thunder were struggling at 80-8 and getting to even a hundred seemed very difficult. But an out of the blue fifty from Chris Green, where he scored 50 off just 31 balls, hitting four boundaries and a six made it possible for the team to get past the 100 run mark and eventually reach 137-9. An unbeaten 17 off 21 balls by Tanveer Sangha was also important. For Sixers, O’Keefe was the pick of the bowlers, getting four crucial wickets of Alex Hales, Alex Ross, Daniel Sams and Oliver Davis. Ben Dwarshuis also picked up two wickets. Earlier in the evening, after being put to bat, Sixers got off to a flyer after the fall of Jack Edwards in the second over. Josh Philippe and Hughes put up 82 runs for the second wicket. Philippe eventually got out for 57. However, Hughes continued and added another 77 with skipper Moises Henriques before getting out on 66 off 48 balls. Henriques did not bother even as wickets fell on the other end and scored an unbeaten 47 off just 27 balls to get his team to 197-5 in their 20 overs. Post this win, the Sixers overtook the Thunder and have now reached the second position in the BBL 2021-22 Points Table even as both have an equal number of points (31). The Sixers have a game in their hand as compared to Thunder. Perth Scorchers remain at the top of the table.
BBL 11 | Sixers in trouble as Curran, Manenti ruled out; O’Keefe sidelined with injury
The Sydney Sixers have lost three of its key team members in the ongoing Big Bash League 2021-22. While the two pacers in Tom Curran and Ben Manenti have been ruled out for the entire season with deep injuries, experienced spinner Steve O'Keefe has also been sidelined for at least a week with a calf strain. Curran, who complained of a back spasm in the Sixers’ last game against Melbourne Stars at the MCG is found to have a troublesome hotspot in the back has forced the fast bowler to leave the tournament and return to the United Kingdom for rehabilitation. The 24-year-old right-arm off-break bowler Manenti suffered a neck stress fracture and has been ruled out due to it. With Manenti out and O'Keefe on a short term break, the Sixers are left with only Llyod Pope as their pure spin-bowling option going forward. Even after all these injury concerns, the pink team’s skipper Moises Henriques is not at all worried as he believes that his team always comes prepared with 18 guys who can be match ready. Hence even if three guys have suffered injuries, the all-rounder believes that rather than being a setback, it can be an opportunity for the remaining guys to step up. "We pride ourselves on being a club and a team that embraces challenges but to lose players of the calibre of Tom and Ben, and to have SOK on the sidelines, would be a challenge for any team and those guys aren't simply replaced," the captain said. "On and off the field, all three of those guys play a massive role for us and their presence around the team and skills on the field will be missed by everybody in the group. But for us, we always look to have 18-match ready players in our squad and we see it as an opportunity for others within our group. We saw Ben Dwarshuis return from injury this week, Jackson Bird isn't too far away and Sean Abbott is back after the birth of his daughter, so there is no need to panic," he added. Sixers are currently sitting at the top of the table with 11 points in their kitty having registered three wins out of four games that they have played so far.
New BBL rule to allow bowlers free hit at stumps, Siddle dreads becoming 1st bowler to miss
Although in force since the start of the Women’s Big Bash League, but the new rule which allows bowlers a free hit at the stumps if the batter doesn't make to the crease in the 75 seconds time limit from the dismissal or removal (by retirement) of the last batter at the strike, might have been used in the very first game of the BBL 11. Melbourne Stars’ Syed Faridoun had to sprint his way to the wicket at number 11 and he just beat the clock by a few seconds otherwise the Sydney Sixers bowler Steve O'Keefe would have been given a free shot at the stumps. Although the rue has been applied to save time in the game and also to benefit the bowling unit thereby, former Australia international and Adelaide Strikers’ veteran and stand-in captain Peter Siddle dreads becoming the first bowler to miss the free hit. "I guess you do (fancy a free bowl at the stumps) but you don't want to be the first guy to do it and miss," he said in a press meet on Monday, December 06th. However, the 37-year-old was sure that the batters wouldn’t be giving any such opportunity any time soon to bowlers. "We all know how much batters love having a hit and not missing out, so I can't imagine there'd be too many guys taking it slow this season,” he added. According to the rule At the fall of a wicket or retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must be ready to face the next delivery within 75 seconds. If the batter fails to arrive in time, then they must stand to the side of the pitch for the first delivery of their innings and allow the bowler a free ball at the stumps. If the ball strikes the wicket the batter is out bowled. If the ball misses the wicket it is counted as a dot ball and a ball faced. If the bowler delivers a no-ball, the next delivery is a free hit. And if the new batter is the non-striker (the batters crossed while the ball was in the air, the wicket fell at the end of the over or there was a run out at the bowler's end), then the same process is followed when they get on strike to face their first delivery.
BBL 11 | Sixers annihilate Stars in season opener, register biggest victory by runs in league's history
The 11th season of the Big Bash League started on two extremes as it saw a brilliant batting performance from the Sydney Sixers which registered its highest ever total in BBL history and 8th in the league’s history to score 213-4 against Melbourne Stars. In the same game though, the Stars registered their lowest score in the BBL history and that too by a huge margin as they folded out for 61 in just 11.1 overs. Their previous lowest total was 99 which was incidentally registered against Sixers only in 2020. For Stars, who were without the services of World Cup hero Marcus Stoinis in this game, it wasn’t going to be an easy chase at all. However, the meek way in which they surrendered was unlike the character shown by their skipper Glenn Maxwell and even the team itself. In the very first over itself, opener Joe Clarke and number three Nick Larkin were trapped by Steve O’Keefe who would go on to pick four wickets in the entire match. From there onwards, the men in green just couldn’t recover as wickets fell one after another. Sean Abbott who dismissed Maxwell in the fourth over of the innings also picked three wickets. Peter Neville the other opener alongside Clarke for the Stars was the highest scorer with 18 off 14 balls. Apart from him, only Hilton Cartwright was able to get into the double-digit for the team from Melbourne. Earlier in the evening, after losing the toss and being asked to bat first at their home ground of SCG, the Sixers started slowly but build on the momentum by the openers Josh Philippe and James Vince. While Philippe scored 83 off 47 balls, Vince got out on 44. Moises Henriques, the skipper of the side who came to bat at number three was unstoppable as he smashed his way to a 38 ball 76, scoring at a strike rate of more than 200. Courtesy of these big scores, the Sixers reached 213 in their 20 overs. For the Stars, Brody Couch picked two wickets while Maxwell and Sam Rainbird shared one each. This win of the Sixers by 152 runs is now the biggest in the history of the league.
