IPL 2022 | Shane Watson opens up on Simon Katich unceremonious exit from SRH
Former Australian all-rounder and assistant head coach of the Delhi Capitals, Shane Watson, has reckoned that alarm bells rung in the case of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) after his former teammate Simon Katich left the franchise immediately after the mega-auction ahead of IPL 2022. Katich, who was appointed as deputy to head coach Tom Moody by the Sunrisers management, stepped back from his role following the event in Bengaluru back in February. Officially, Katich claimed bio-bubble fatigue as the reason behind his departure. However, reports in Australian media suggested that the former batsman was unhappy that the pre-planned strategy before the auction didn't see the light of the day during the event. "Katich disagreed with how the team was being managed and felt that pre-auction plans were disregarded," said reports in Australian media. Sunrisers had an apalling start to their IPL 2022 campaign against the Rajasthan Royals (RR), where they were totally outplayed in all facets of the game. Speaking to the Grade Cricketer, Watson delved into the Katich issue and the state of the SRH management. "Alarm bells started when Simon Katich left just after the auction. That's normally not a great sight because Katich is one of the most generally good people. It's really injustice really if people really go against what they say. So obviously something has gone down there that Katich stepped away immediately and won't be a part of it. That's a warning sign to start with," the Delhi Capitals assistant coach stated. The Hyderabad franchise has been embroiled in controversy since the last season when they not only sacked but also dumped their most successful player David Warner midway through the season. While Watson did concede that SRH doesn't look particularly strong in the absence of David Warner and Rashid Khan, their performance against the Royals suggests a lot going around in their set-up off the field. "The make-up of their team is not incredibly strong and then how they have performed in the first game. Yes, Rajasthan Royals have a very good squad, and they played really well, but it's not looking great. It feels like there is a lot of stuff around the team that is obviously not helping everything on the field," Watson added. He also touched upon the influence on the team environment when a top player like Warner is treated as he was by the management. Sunrisers will look to shrug off their poor performance from the first game when they take on Lucknow Supergiants on April 4.
Simon Katich resigns as assistant coach of SRH; Simon Helmot roped as replacement
Simon Katich, who had played for Australia and was also a coach, was roped in as assistant coach by head coach Tom Moody as well.
IPL 2021 | Who is the new RCB recruit Tim David?
Announcing ring of changes in their squad and leadership group before the second part of this year’s edition of the Indian Premier League, the Royal Challengers Bangalore announced that the New Zealander explosive batsman Fin Allen will be replaced by Tim David. David was born on March 16, 1996, in Singapore and he later migrated to Australia to give shape to his Cricketing career. He presented many junior-level sides such as the Western Australian U-23s and Western Australian XI before making his way to the Big Bash League. He made his Big Bash debut for the Perth Scorchers in the 2017 edition of the competition and has been a force to reckon with the Western Australian side. Later, he was drafted by the Hobart Hurricanes before the 2020 edition of the league and he announced his arrival in grand style with a 32-ball 58 in the very first appearance for the Tasmania-based side. He has amassed 388 runs from 26 Big Bash games at a staggering strike rate of 148.09 and 19 sixes. He has been known for his brute force and the ability to change the momentum of a game in a short time. Historically, he has the third-best strike rate in the history of T20 cricket across the league, franchise and international cricket after Ravija Sanduwaran of Kuwait and Glenn Maxwell of Australia. He has not given up on his international career and continues to represent Singapore at the world level. The Royal Challengers Bangalore would be hopeful for his counter-attacking innings in the second half of the IPL this year. Mike Hesson, who also took over as the head coach of the Virat Kohli-led side after the resignation of Simon Katich, also highlighted what the franchise expects of him in the tournament. He said that the team is looking up to David to fill the big boots of AB de Villiers and Glenn Maxwell with his power-hitting in case they suffer any injury concerns. He added that the inclusion of David has been done with an idea of strengthening the middle order. He is coming off a great run of form in the Royal London ODI Cup in England where he scored two centuries and the RCB would be desperate to see him going great guns with the bat in the middle order come September 20 when they are slated to face the Kolkata Knight Riders.
IPL 2021: Simon Katich, Kane Richardson heap praise on CSK and MS Dhoni
Head coach of the Royal Challengers Bangalore Simon Katich lavished praises on former Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and said that he and his side have a huge amount of respect for the charismatic skipper. Dhoni hasn’t been in the best of form with the bat but his captaincy skills have been phenomenal in this season so far and have led CSK to three victories out of the four matches. Kohli led RCB will lock horns against the Dhoni-led CSK in a few moments at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. While RCB is currently occupying the top spot in the points table, CSK is currently in the second position having won 3 out of their 4 matches so far. "Dhoni is a master, isn't he? They are sitting at the top with three wins, they have had a fantastic start, they have fantastic players, we have a huge amount of respect for CSK, it is going to be a great game, we have seen some great games in Mumbai already. CSK has a very damaging batting lineup but we know our bowling lineup has performed well this season," stated Katich in a video that was posted by the official Twitter handle of RCB Meanwhile Australian medium-pacer Kane Richardson who played his first match for the RCB this season accepted the fact that the yellow brigade have a sensational batting line-up and RCB need to play out of their skin to return triumphant against the three-time champions. "It was enjoyable to finally play. It has been good watching the boys play in the first three games but it was good to finally get out there and play and be a part of the winning team. I have been rusty myself, it was great," said Richardson. "It all depends on the conditions at the Wankhede. Faf du Plessis and Ruturaj Gaikwad, are in form and they are batting well, so we will come up with some plans to stop them. They have experience throughout their team, they have won a lot of IPLs so it is going to be a really good game," he added. It has been a sensational start for the Bangalore based team who are hoping to win their first IPL. Their start has been phenomenal having won 4 matches out of 4. Captain Virat Kohli after the win against the Royals asked their fans to not get over-excited as this is still early days into the tournament. Coming back to CSK, after losing the opening game against the Capitals, they bounced back strongly with three back to back victories.
IPL 2021: It’s a new challenge the fact that it’s a day game: Simon Katich
It has been a dream start for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in Vivo IPL 14 as they are the only unbeaten team in the tournament so far after the completion of the first week of the extravaganza. They started off with a nail-biting victory against the defending champions Mumbai Indians in the curtain-raiser. In the second encounter against the Sunrisers Hyderabad, they looked down and out for the major part of the match but the RCB bowlers held their nerves and delivered a killer punch in the last few overs as run-scoring became pretty difficult in the final phases of the second innings. This has been the trend in this tournament so far and it will be interesting to see if it remains the same in the afternoon match between the Kolkata Knight Riders and the Royal Challengers Bangalore. In the lead-up to the mouth-watering clash, RCB posted a video of their last-minute preparation on their Twitter handle where one can see all the RCB outfit practicing hard ahead of the match against the Kolkata Knight Riders. Meanwhile RCB head coach, Simon Katich feels that although KKR lost their previous game against the Mumbai Indians from a winning position, they are still a very dangerous team and they will have to be on their toes to come out on the winning side. “We know that KKR played two very good games. They didn't quite get the result in the second game. But they did a lot right, and they are a very dangerous team. "We know they have a lot of quality with both bat and the ball. They will be keen to bounce back. We are keen to stay on a roll. We know there's still a lot of hard work that needs to be done in this tournament,” Katich said in the video posted by RCB on their Twitter handle. Given that this will be the first day game of the season, both teams need to get their plans right and execute them well in the match. Katich feels that it is important for both teams to get acclimatised to the conditions. It won’t be easy for both teams to play a day match in the Chennai heat. “It’s a new challenge the fact that it’s a day game. We know that the wicket has been hard work for the batsman at times. There's spin. It's been slow. It's a new challenge, but I know this group is truly hungry.” Katich further added.
IPL 2021: With Indian core group intact, Simon Katich feels RCB has got the right balance to click
Royal Challengers Bangalore, the side that has not had a great deal of success in the Indian Premier League (IPL) over the years is ready with the right mix of youth, experience, foreign and domestic players, feels coach Simon Katich. Talking about the mini-auction and the team’s development ahead of the new season, Katich said that keeping the core group of Indian talent was their priority. “We made a conscious effort to try and keep the core of the group together. We got to the playoffs after a lot of years and we kept backing a lot of Indian talent, which helped us in getting there,” he said in a video uploaded by the RCB on their official Twitter account. Stating that they have kept the guys they backed last year and are expecting the returns from them, Katich said, “We backed young [Devdutt] Padikkal who had never played IPL and he didn’t let us down. We backed Washington Sundar and played him a full season and he went on to play great cricket for India in the next six month. We also backed young [Mohammed] Siraj and [Navdeep] Saini. These four young Indian players there are the ones that we backed and gave full playing time.” The role of the experience was also highlighted by the former Australian Test opener as he counted on the likes of skipper Virat Kohli and senior men Yuzvendar Chahal and AB de Villiers alongside new recruits Glenn Maxwell and Dan Christian to get them over the line this time around. “Of course with Chahal and Virat, the experience is there and the core of the Indian players is maintained. There was some rejig no doubt, but ultimately we are happy with the team that we have got at the display. And with Maxwell and Dan Christian coming in, we are high on experience as well,” said the 45-year-old. The Challengers play their first game against Mumbai Indians, which will also be the first game of the IPL 2021 and would take place at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
