World T20 2021 | Scotland squad is full of match-winners: Jonathan Trott

Former England player Jonathan Trott has put his wight behind the Scotland side and said that the unit comprises “matches winners”. "We have some really good players in this Scotland squad, the batting line-up is full of match-winners," the 40-year-old told The Scotsman. “In terms of the batters, they are a powerful bunch of lads. It is going to be about who can deal with the pressure and not let the occasion get a hold of the emotions when the World Cup starts,” he added. The Scotland side first made an appearance in a World T20 in the inaugural edition in 2007 but finished at the bottom of the group that comprised of India and Pakistan. The script didn’t really change much in 2009 as well and the side finished last in the group that had the likes of South Africa and New Zealand. Later, Scotland played the 2016 World T20 and finally won their first game against Hong Kong. The win though wasn’t enough to help them make the qualification from a group that had Afghanistan and Zimbabwe. Scotland begin the campaign on October 17, 2021 (Sunday) against Bangladesh in Al Amerat and will then play PNG on October 19 and co-host Oman on October 21 at the same venue respectively.

England appoint Trescothick as batting coach; Jeetan Patel, Jon Lewis to coach spinners, pacers

Former England opener Marcus Trescothick has been appointed as the batting coach of the England cricket team, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said in a statement on March 01. Trescothick is currently serving as the Assistant Coach at Somerset, a county he represented before taking up the coaching role and will take up his responsibility for England starting mid-March. Trescothick will replace former England batsman Jonathan Trott, who is serving as the batting coach of the team on the ongoing tour of India. Along with Trescothick, the ECB has announced as many as three appointments in the coaching department. Former New Zealand and Warwickshire off-spinner Jeetan Patel has been appointed as the full-time spin bowling coach of the team after he applied for the role last month. Also, former England pacer Jon Lewis who was coaching the England Lions squads has been promoted as the pace bowling coach of the team. Lewis has been with the England cricket team on the tour of India. Following his appointment for the senior team, he will vacate the position of Lions’ coach, which will be taken up by Richard Dawson, who was the head coach at Gloucestershire County. Dawson will assume the role next month. “Following an extensive recruitment process, I’m really excited about the calibre of the individuals that we’ve appointed into these specialist roles. Marcus, Jon and Jeetan have demonstrated their ability at the highest level and also show huge potential for the future. Working alongside Carl Hopkinson, our current Elite Fielding Coach, we have the makings of a strong specialist coaching team, possessing a diverse range of experience,” ECB Performance Director Mo Bobat on the appointment of new coaches in England set up.

Batting coach Jonathan Trott backs young batsmen's methods, suggests avoiding 'desperation'

England batting coach Jonathan Trott is not going hard at the batsmen, although they have flattered in the last two days and have allowed India to get back in the series after trailing 0-1. Trott said that aside does not become too bad over the course of two Test matches and that batsmen must not get desperate about getting runs against Indian spinners and instead focussing on the right mentality to keep challenging them on tricky pitches. "Of course it's disappointing the way the last two Tests have gone, but you don't become a bad side over two Tests. It's about being clear in how they want to go about it and not being too desperate. Sometimes you can want it too much. So getting the right kind of mentality is important,” Trott said in a virtual press conference. Trott also emphasized the importance of experience in playing on tricky surfaces such as in the last two Tests and highlighted the lack of it in the England batting order. All young batsmen such as Rory Burns, Dominic Sibley, and Ollie Pope have been found out against the variations and accuracy of Axar Patel and Ravichandran Ashwin, but Trott has backed their methods and ruled out any major changes in mid of a series. "Ollie Pope, Zak Crawley and Dom Sibley have played 44 Tests all together and a combined 11 in Asia, so it is tricky for those younger guys. You'd like to be able to learn and still win Test matches but unfortunately, that wasn't the case in the previous two. All our batters, I think, have a pretty good method so it's about going out there and executing it and not perhaps trying to change too much mid-series,” Trott added. The fourth and final Test of the series between India and England is scheduled to start on March 04 at the same venue as the third Test, and it is highly likely that the pitch will offer similar assistance to bowlers like it did in the last Test.
