Kirk Edwards

Kirk Edwards announced himself on the world stage when he scored a century on debut. He was a top-order and played 17 Tests and 16 One-Dayers for West Indies. Emerging from the Under-19 circuit, Edwards played domestic cricket for seven years, before making his international debut. However, he didn’t have a long stint at the highest arena. The Barbados-born was named the vice-captain for the West Indies contingent during the 2004 Youth World Cup. Later that season, he then went to play the Red Stripe Bowl tournament for Barbados, but it wasn’t until the 2008-09 season when he racked 504 runs in the Regional Four-Day competition. It followed two more successive domestic seasons that led him to get the over-due West Indies call-up in 2010. 

The Barbadian was initially selected for the ODI series against Sri Lanka, which got affected by the rain. Hence, he made his ODI debut against India and a couple of months later, became the 14th West Indies player to smack a Test century on his debut against the same opposition. Later, he replaced an injured Adrian Barath in the 2011 World Cup squad. After that, he scored two centuries and eight fifties, before losing his purple patch in 2012. 

A batsman who showed a lot of promise and was seen as the long-term number three for West Indies was wasted due to his lack of consistency. Edwards went back to domestic circles and also tried his luck in the Caribbean Premier League, but the national selectors remained unmoved.
