Garnett Kruger

The former Gauteng and South Africa fast bowler, Garnett Kruger is a tall, slim hit-the-deck kind of bowler with a tall bowling action. Kruger arrived at the domestic circuit in 1997 playing for Eastern Province B before moving to Lions in 2004 after the reorganisation of South African domestic cricket.

Kruger, who played for Leicestershire in county cricket in 2004 remained on the fringes of the international side until he earned a national call-up for the second time in his career for the tour of Australia in 2005-06. Appearing in a few matches, he failed to make a mark on the international stages and was further dropped from the squad. In hopes of reigniting his cricketing career, he joined Leicestershire quit South African cricket, and signed a long-term Kolpak contract with Leicestershire, after claiming he is disenchanted with the opportunities on offer to black and coloured cricketers in his homeland.

Concerned about the workload in English domestic cricket, Kruger left County to play domestic cricket in South Africa but after a year he signed a year contract with Glamorgan, becoming the County’s first Kolpak player in 2009.

At the age of 44, Kruger featured in the 2021 Road World Safety Series playing for the South Africa Legends. Playing against Indian Legends, he donned the new ball and provided the early breakthrough as he dismissed Virender Sehwag in the second over of the match but ended up on the losing side as the Proteas Legend squad failed to chase the mammoth target of 205 in 20 overs.
