Player Bio

A member of the World Cup-winning team and a former Australian left-arm spinner, Xavier Doherty is one of Tasmania’s most respected and highly successful cricketers.

“X” or “Dohy” as he’s known, hails from George Town in the north of the state before he debuted for the Tigers at the age of 19 in 2001-02.  He then went on to represent Tasmania and Australia with much success. Regular success on the domestic circuit granted Doherty a place in Australia A side in 2008.

Doherty made his debut for his country on November 3rd, 2010, and made an impact early with four wickets against Sri Lanka at the MCG.   In the same month, he made his Test as well as Ashes debut simultaneously, when he played in the first Test against England at Brisbane. Initially drafted for the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup, he was ruled out due to injury and Australians missed him in the Indian conditions.

He played for the Hobart Hurricanes for the first four seasons of the KFC T20 Big Bash League and has made the move to the spin-friendly wicket at Etihad Stadium for the fifth season of BBL. He also played 60 ODIs for the Baggy Green, which included being part of the 2015 World Cup-winning squad. Doherty bowled his last ball for Tasmania after announcing his retirement from first-class and one-day cricket in March 2017 after being part of Tasmania for 15 years.
