Born in Kandy, Chamara Kapugedera is an immensely talented former Sri Lankan cricketer. Kapugedera was no doubt a stylish and aggressive right-handed batsman. Captaining most of his junior teams, he was picked for the Sri Lankan u-19 side for their tour of Pakistan. He essayed some great knocks against then Under-19 champions and made a name for himself at just 18 years of age.

Kapugedera made his ODI debut in 2006 against Australia and was a permanent member of the squad till 2010. He struggled to perform consistently and was later dropped from the side before he made another comeback in 2015.

His talent has never been in doubt, but in international cricket, that raw ability has not usually translated into runs. Perhaps batting low down the pecking order in limited-overs cricket, he never got to showcase his skills. Nevertheless, his returns were modest, and his place in the side became untenable, for a few years at least.

One of the best fielders in the Sri Lankan outfit, he is also a lively medium pace bowler. However, his weakness is his temperament as he is prone to recklessness and has a tendency to give his wicket away easily. He has had a start-stop career for the national side and never really settled in the playing XI. Kapugedra retired from all forms of cricket in December 2019 and currently, he is coaching Saracens Sports Club and looks to pursue his career in coaching.
