Coach Russell Domingo urges Bangladesh to focus on 'process' and get rid of 'obsession' of winning

Coach Russell Domingo urges Bangladesh to focus on 'process' and get rid of 'obsession' of winning

After making an on and off start to their T20 World Cup campaign, Bangladesh finally got on to a good run of form to qualify for the Super 12 stage of the tournament. However, their limitations were only masked by the brilliance of Shakib Al Hasan in the qualifying round which could not be hidden in the main stage against top sides. Bangladesh have lost all their Super 12 games and now are on the brink of elimination from the tournament, but their coach Russell Domingo is choosing to see the bright side of it and said that Bangladesh were ahead in most part of their games against Sri Lanka and West Indies before losing the plot. He said that the team needs to see positives out of the close games they played and only that will enable them to find out the mistakes they committed at what he called “crucial stages” of the games. "We have played against past champions Sri Lanka, England and West Indies. They are tough sides. In two of those games, we were on top for almost 80-90% of those games. We have to look at the positives. We had Sri Lanka and West Indies under pressure. We didn't finish well with the bat against West Indies. We didn't finish well with the ball against Sri Lanka. "We have to focus on the positive aspects, and then limit the mistakes. We made mistakes in crucial stages." Domingo also tried to change the outlook of the Bangladesh side and said that the players must not see every game and opportunity with the “obsession” of winning. He lamented that focusing more on results and obsessing about winning the games doesn’t allow players mental space to follow the right “process” needed to produce the results they are after. He said that players need to disconnect from the result and focus on what they need to execute on the field in order to make a difference. "We know there's an obsession with winning and disappointment when you don't win. Our focus is the process and how we are going to achieve that win," Domingo said on the eve of the South Africa game. "Everybody is trying to win every single game but when you are focused only on that, you lose track of the things you need to do to get that win. I think we have to focus on our skills and processes in tomorrow's game. If we do that, hopefully, the result goes our way,” Domingo added. Bangladesh are scheduled to play South Africa in their next game and another loss at the hands of Proteas will end their journey in the tournament. Bangladesh were never on the top of their game with the top order batsmen lacking form and not allowing bowlers cushioning of extra runs to put pressure on opposition batting lineups.

T20 World Cup | SL vs BAN: Pacer Binura Fernando in for Theekshana, Bangladesh play spinner Nasum for Taskin

T20 World Cup | SL vs BAN: Pacer Binura Fernando in for Theekshana, Bangladesh play spinner Nasum for Taskin

It was a totally contrasting approach by Sri Lanka and Bangladesh as they revealed their playing XI in their first-ever Super 12 game at Sharjah. Dasun Shanaka, the skipper of Sri Lanka after winning the toss, chose to bowl first and said that Maheesh Theekshana, the mystery spinner was out of the playing XI due to a side niggle. In place of Theekshana, the Sri Lankan side played a tall left-arm pacer Binusra Fernando, who would be playing his first game in the World Cup. While Sri Lanka have previously played at the venue, but on the other hand, Bangladesh, who are coming in from Oman, which had lively wickets and helped their pacers, decided to omit their prime pacer Taskin Ahmed for a left-arm spinner Nasum Ahmed, who would be playing his first World Cup game. The decisions show that both the teams have gone into the game with totally different approaches as Bangladesh are banking on their spin to come good and were happy to bat first, Sri Lanka chose to bat second, meaning they are trusting their pace bowlers to restrict Bangladesh under a low total. This game is also a heavy clash because two South African coaches in Sri Lanka’s Micky Arthur and Bangladesh’s Russell Domingo are up against each other in a tactical battle.

With series under their belt, hosts expected to test bench strength, NZ look for consolation win

Bangladesh created history on Thursday after they clinched another T20I series at home after beating New Zealand in the penultimate match of the five-match series in Dhaka to take an unassailable 3-1 lead. The Asian side has been in some good form in the recent past especially in the T20I format. They earlier thumped Australia 4-1 at home and have now followed it by series win against the Blackcaps. Nasum Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman rattled the New Zealand batting order once again as the visitors were bundled out for 93 on a track that didn’t really have much on offer for the batsmen. Nevertheless, there was one positive for the Kiwis despite the dismal batting performance as Will Young was among some runs as he scored 46 off 48 and tried to hold the fort from one end. Moreover, the bowlers especially Ajaz Patel did try to extract something out of the pitch as he picked up a couple of wickets at the cost of just 9 runs in 4 overs. But Mahmudullah made sure that the hosts didn’t come under any pressure and anchored them to a win eventually. Having clinched the series now, the home side can experiment with XI and test the bench strength ahead. New Zealand on the other side, will be looking for a consolation win in this fifth and final t20I. BAN vs NZ | 4th T20I: Bangladesh create history, win another T20I series

Bangladesh created history on Wednesday in Dhaka after beating New Zealand in the fourth T20I of the five-match series to take a 3-1 unassailable lead. Riding on some brilliant bowling display, the home side once again rattled the Blackcaps batting order and bundled them out for 93 in 19.3 overs. Nasum Ahmed and Mustafizu Rahman scalped four-wicket haul each while Mahedi Hasan and Saifuddin had a wicket each to their names. The visitors had another disappointing start to the proceedings after losing a couple of early wickets before captain Tom Latham and Will Young joined hands and steadied the ship for the team with a 35-run stand for the third wicket. But Latham’s departure for 21 off 26 saw a fall of wickets at regular intervals and New Zealand were soon left tottering at 91/8 to eventually get bowled out. Young top-scored with 46 off 48 during the course. In reply, the home side too lost an early wicket after Liton Das was undone by McConchie for 6 off 11. But Mohammad Naim and Shakib Al Hasan then complied 26 runs for the second wicket before Shakib was sent back in the hut by Ajaz Patel. The left-hander was stumped out for a run-a-ball 8. Patel then had another scalp in a quick succession after he cleaned up Mushfiqur Rahim for a duck. Bangladesh were in a spot of bother at 32/3 when Naim was joined by captain Mahmudullah in the middle and the two batsmen put 35 runs for the fourth wicket before Naim was runout for 29. But Mahmudullah and Afif Hossain made sure that there were no more fall of wickets as they anchored the side to a win in the last over. Mahmudullah remained not out for 43 off 48 that included a couple of maximums. Latham later lauded Bangladesh and also accepted that the visiting team failed to put up a defendable total in the innings. “We were probably a bit under-par. We were looking at around the 110 mark but ended up a bit light. Credit to how Bangladesh batted. We got early wickets but they had it under control,” he said after the match. Bangladesh have been in some good form in the T20I format. They earlier defeated Australia 4-1 in a five-match series and followed it with this winning triumph against the Kiwis. The two sides will now face each other in the final T20I on Friday.
