Player Bio

Prenelan Subrayen is a South African cricketer who represents the Dolphins at the domestic level. He is a budding spinning prospect for his national side, and is an off-break bowler and a handy lower-order batter.

Subrayen donned the South African jersey during the 2012 Under-19 World Cup and finished as the Proteas’ leading wicket-taker.

Born in Durban, Subrayen started playing the sport at his school, where he mastered bowling. He made his first-class debut for KwaZulu-Natal during the three-day tournament in 2011, which got him on board for the tour to England with the Under-19 team. As an age-group player, he bagged 41 wickets at an average of 13.66 off 14 Youth ODIs, to be named a prodigy.

However, in 2012, the spinner’s action was hit with a suspension, later he modified it to bowl again in first-class cricket. He came back strongly to become the main man for the Dolphins.

In 2015, the South African played league cricket in England, where he scored 225 runs at an average of 32.14 and took 24 wickets for the Bolton and District Association, before heading home early due to personal reasons.

Over the years, he has been consistently performing in domestic circles. Ahead of the 2019 season, he was named in the KwaZulu-Natal, and ended the CSA 4-Day Franchise Series with 38 dismissals. For the 2021 season, the spinner returned to play for the Dolphins, and was one of the top wicket-takers for the club across all formats.

Sooner or later, Subrayen’s efforts were rewarded as in May 2021, the spinner was picked for the Test tour to the West Indies. This tour could be a learning curve for the 27-year-old as he will be touring with the full-fledged Proteas squad.
