SA vs BAN | South Africa becomes the 1st team to use COVID-19 substitutes in international cricket

In a first, the South African cricket team replaced Sarel Erwee and Wiaan Mulder with Khaya Zondo and Glenton Stuurman in their playing XI on Monday to become the first side to use COVID-19 substitutes in international cricket. It happened ahead of what turned out to be the final day of the two-match Test series against Bangladesh when two members of the Proteas' playing XI- Sarel Erwee and Wiaan Mulder- tested positive for COVID-19. Confirming the development, Cricket South Africa (CSA) released an official statement that read: "Khaya Zondo will make his Test debut on Day 4 of the 2nd #BetwayTest against Bangladesh after Sarel Erwee and Wiaan Mulder tested positive for Covid-19. The pair replaced with Zondo and Glenton Stuurman." Speaking on the development, CSA's chief medical officer Dr. Shuaib Manjira described it as an unfortunate but expected situation given the series was being played in a managed environment where the movement of players was allowed and not in a strict bio-bubble. "This is an unfortunate situation, but not unexpected after the decision was made to have this tour under the Managed Event Environment (MEE) protocol, rather than the strict Bio-safe Environment (BSE) Protocol as was previously the case," Manjira said. "This is in line with the country's policy in revoking the Disaster Management Act concerning the pandemic and the huge mental strain that a bubble environment induces," he added. Also, this is the first-ever instance of a side opting for Covid-19 substitutes in international cricket. The proliferation of COVID-19 in the South African camp and the subsequent Covid replacements did not have any bearing on the match as the Proteas thumped a hapless Bangladesh unit by a whopping 332 runs. Bangladesh's second innings proved to be an exact carbon copy of the Durban Test, where they were rolled over by the spin-duo of Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer. A similar sort of thing happened at Port Elizabeth on the 4th day as Maharaj once again claimed a seven-wicket-haul, with Harmer wiping out the rest. Maharaj finished with figures of 7/40 in 12 overs as Bangladesh were shot out for a mere 80 in just 23.3 overs. Thanks to a commanding win in PE, South Africa wrapped a successful summer of Test cricket, which saw them beat India 2-1 and Bangladesh 2-0 at home and eke out a draw 1-1 in New Zealand.

South Africa made a good turnaround on Day 1 of the second Test against New Zealand in Christchurch after suffering a thumping defeat in the first encounter earlier. Batting first, the Proteas got off to an impressive start with openers Dean Elgar and Sarel Erwee putting up a partnership of 111 runs for the first wicket. Elgar was removed by Tim Southee for 41 while Erwee continued with his form and notched up a century during the course eventually. He was joined by Aiden Markram and the two batters then stitched a stand of 88 runs for the second wicket. The visitors then lost a couple of wickets in quick succession with both Markram and Erwee being sent back in the hut. While Markram was out for 42, Erweek scored 108. South Africa were 238/3 with Temba Bavuma and Rassie van der Dussen unbeaten at the crease. Tim Southee, Matt Henry and Neil Wagner scalped a wicket each for the New Zealand.

SA vs IND | 3rd Test | Preview: With captain Kohli back, can India finally conquer Proteas?

Virat Kohli, the Indian test skipper on Monday announced that he is going to captain the side in the third and final Test against South Africa, starting January 11 at the Newlands in Cape Town. Kohli missed the second Test due to a back spasm and India lost the game to draw the series level at 1-1. Now that the captain is back, he would like to win this, his final frontier as South Africa remains the only nation that hasn’t conquered as a captain in terms of winning a Test series there. Looking at the scheme of things, this also seems like the last opportunity for the 33-year-old to win a series in South Africa as a captain, because India would most likely tour the rainbow nation next after 3-4 years only and by that time Kohli will definitely not be the captain of the Indian side. South Africa on the other hand would be looking to maintain their stature as a virgin destination for Test series wins as far as subcontinent sides are concerned. For that to happen, they have enough motivation now, having drawn the series level at the Wanderers in Johannesburg. South Africa vs India: Match Details Match Number- 03rd Test Time and Date: 01:30 pm IST, January 11, 2022 Venue: The Newlands, Cape Town Broadcast and Live Stream: Star Sports and Hotstar Pitch Report The pitch at Newlands, much like other venues in South Africa, will be supporting pace and bounce and hence four pacers policy will once again be applied by both the skippers. If the average score is any indication, then the pitch is best suited to bat on the first and the second day as it remains intact on these two days, but as the days pass, it becomes more helpful for the bowlers. Weather Forecast Forst day of the five-day Test match will see a lot of rain but it would generally be passing showers except for the first few hours in the morning where it has been forecasted to rain consistently. The remaining four days are expected to remain warm and sunny and only some clouds might hover for a few hours here and there in between, but that would resin inconsequential as far as its effects on the proceedings of the game are concerned. Team News India The Indian team would be without the services of Mohammed Siraj who has been ruled out due to side strain. Apart from him, skipper Kohli would be making a comeback and thus Hanuma Vihari, who played well enough in the Test, would have to make way. And if Kohli and coach Rahul Dravid are bold enough to oversee the fifties by Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara in the second innings of the last game, then Vihari might stay at the cots of one of them. In place of Siraj, either Umesh Yadav or Ishant Sharma would get a go. Most probably it would be Umesh seeing the kind of success hit the deck bowlers like Mohammad Shami and Jasprit Bumrah have had. Probable XI Mayank Agarwal, KL Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli (c), Ajinkya Rahane/ Hanuma Vihari, Rishabh Pant (WK), Shardul Thakur, Ravichandran Ashwin, Mohammad Shami, Umesh Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah. South Africa South Africa have so far not announced any injuries and in that case, they can either pitch the same XI once again or bring in an extra batter in place of Keshav Maharaj to strengthen the batting as Aiden Markram and skipper Elgar himself can roll their arm for spin bowling options, a requirement of which seem negligible. Sarel Erwee could finally have his moment as he can also bowl spin. Probable XI Dean Elgar (C), Aiden Markram, Temba Bavuma, Rassie van der Dussen, Keegan Petersen, Kyle Verreynne (WK), Keshav Maharaj / Sarel Erwee, Marco Jansen, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Duanne Olivier CE Fantasy XI Dean Elgar, KL Rahul, Temba Bavuma, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, Marco Jansen, Shardul Thakur, Ravichandran Ashwin, Kagiso Rabada, Duanne Olivier, Jasprit Bumrah Captain- Dean Elgar Vice-Captain- Shardul Thakur

Pieter Malan appointed captain as South Africa announce A squad for home series against India A

South Africa have announced their 14-man squad under the leadership of Pieter Malan to face India A in the three-match long four-day series scheduled to start towards the end of this month. The series has been seen as one of the opportunities for the players across both sides to claim spots for themselves in their respective national sides when they clash in December later on. “The senior South Africa and India teams will be clashing this summer here at home, so this is an ideal opportunity for players with Proteas ambitions to put their hands up and make a case for themselves,” CSA convenor of selectors Victor Mpitsang said. “Test cricket remains one of CSA’s key focus areas, along with ensuring that the format continues to thrive and hold relevance in our country. It is therefore vital that a steady stream of talent continues to emerge from our high-performance programme.” Earlier this week, India also announced their squad for the same series under the leadership of Priyank Panchal that also includes the likes of Prithvi Shaw and Navdeep Saini, who have already played Test cricket. The series is scheduled to start on November 23 and conclude on December 9 while the Test series between senior India and South Africa men will commence on December 18. Subrayen, Erwee receive Test call ups, Morris misses out as Proteas announce squads for Windies tour

Cricket South Africa announced a 19 man squad each for the Tests and T20Is to be played on the Proteas’ tour of the West Indies which begins on June 10 with the first Test at the Daren Sammy Stadium in St. Lucia. Spinner Prenelan Subrayen has received his maiden Test call up while veteran first-class batter Sarel Erwee has been called up for the red ball format as well. Apart from these two, Marco Jansen, who played two T20s with Mumbai Indians in the recently postponed IPL has found a place in the team too. While Prenelan, 27 has 145 wickets in 53 First-Class games, he is more than capable enough bowler in the lower order. Erwee, with 90 First-Class games in his kitty has scored 5422 runs with the help of nine centuries and 34 fifties. In the T20I squad, there aren’t many changes. David Miller, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Quinton de Kock and Lungi Ngidi, all of whom went onto play the IPL and were replaced by some unknown faces on the team for the Pakistan series at home, are back into the team. The only player to miss out even after performing well in the IPL is Rajasthan Royals’ Chris Morris. The most expensive player in this year’s IPL auction, Morris won a game single headedly and impressed with both bat and ball. Despite that, he has failed to find a place in the limited-overs squad. People expecting AB de Villiers to be called up would once again have nothing but disappointment as the 360-degree player hasn't been named in the team once more. The Test side would be lead by Elgar while Bavuma would lead the T20Is team. The board also announced the team for South Africa's Ireland tour which would commence after the conclusion of the West Indies tour. Keshav Maharaj is the lone entrant in the ODI and T20I squad. The other 19 players in both the West Indies T20I series and Ireland tour remain the same. The Proteas would play three ODIs and an equal number of T20Is against the Irish team, starting with the first match, an ODI being played at The Village in Dublin. The caravan would then move to Belfast for the second and third T20I.
