PSL 2021 | LHQ vs ISU: Shadab makes a Hussain Talat blunder as Rashid, Tim David take Qalandars over the line
It took three years and a big blunder of the size of Hussain Talat by the skipper Shadab for Islamabad united to lose a game against Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League, but it finally did happen. In the opening game of the PSL’s sixth edition’s Abu Dhabi leg, Lahore Qlanadras needed 16 runs off the last over and even though, Shadab himself had conceded just 23 runs in his three overs to pick an important wicket as well. But instead of applying himself in the final over, he chose to go to an inexperienced part-time medium-pacer Talat to deliver for the team, which he couldn’t as he was hammered for three fours of the first three balls by Rashid Khan, a double on the fourth delivery meant that only two runs were required of the last two balls and the Afghan took a single to put Singaporian Tim David on strike. Talat bowled a bouncer at last, but a top edge behind the wicket-keeper meant that Qalandars not only won the game by five wickets but also went on to top the table. Explaining this move after the game, Shadab said that due to Ben Dunk, a left-hander being on the crease, he, a leggie could not bowl his one spare over during the 15-19 overs. “When it came to the 20th, the ball was wet and Hussain in the past and in nets had bowled. I was confident in him, unfortunately, it didn’t turn out in our favour. But if given a chance and we are stuck in a similar situation, I would once again for Hussain, ‘ said 22-year-old United skipper. Chasing a small but tricky target of 144 on a two-paced wicket in Abu Dhabi at the Shiekh Zayed Stadium, Lahore didn’t have a great start. Hard hitter Fakhar Zaman was bowled for nine runs by Faheem Ashraf. Sonn after youngster Mohammad Faizan was removed by Shadab at the team score of 44. Mohammad Hafeez and skipper Sohail Akhtar then put up a partnership of 38 runs before a brilliant review, asked for by wicketkeeper Rohail Nazir and taken by skipper Shadab, got Sohail out leg before wicket on the bowling of Fawad Ahmed. Hafeez was trapped by Hasan Ali on a slower delivery just one over after Sohail’s wicket. Ben Dunk and his young Australian compatriot David tried to get as close to the target as possible. The duo added 25 in 23 balls and just as they were about to tee off, another brilliant slower one by Ali in the 19th over removed Dunk. It would have been a perfect 19th over had David not hit a six off the last ball to bring the equation down from 22 off seven balls to 16 off six. Earlier in the evening, after winning the toss, Sohail invited Islamabad to bat first. The red lions couldn’t really get going and as a result, lost wickets at regular interval. In fact, at one point in time, they were struggling at 109-8 in 16.5 overs before Mohammad Wasim Junior combined with Faheem to take the team to a fighting total of 143. Qalandars skipper too agreed to the fact that his bowlers gave away extra runs to the tailenders at the end. “We gave away 10-15 runs more than we should have,” Sohail said during the post-match presentation ceremony. The 24-year-old Rashid might not have picked too many wickets, but he along with James Faulkner were the pick of the bowlers. While Faulkner took three early wickets in the powerplay, Rashid gave away just nine runs in his four overs while taking the wicket of Talat. For his extraordinary bowling and match-winning batting, Rashid was adjudged Man of the Match. The Qalandars will be in action once again on Thursday, June 10 when they take on Peshawar Zalmi in the second game of the doubleheaders. United on the other hand would face Quetta Gladiators on June 11 at the same venue.
PSL 6: Oozing with confidence Lahore face soul searching Sultans from Multan
After a day’s break in the sixth edition of the Pakistan Super League, two teams far apart from each other both in Points Table, as well as the mood in the dressing room, will start off the double header’s day on Friday, 26th February. The only similarity in the teams is they share the same province in Pakistan. Lahore Qalandars, sitting at the top of the Points Table and representing the Northern parts of Punjab will face second from bottom in the table, Multan Sultans representing Southern Punjab. Hafeez-Shaheen-Rauf three-dimensional attack of Qalandars The Lahore Qalandars have one of the most dangerous bowling lineups in the tournament with two outstanding quicks in the form of Haris Rauf and Shaheen Afridi. To complement them, they have David Wiese and Ahmed Daniyal with their medium pace and wicket to wicket bowling. The Qalandars though would miss the facilities of Rashid Khan who has left for International duties after playing match-winning roles in the first two games. In batting, they have the Professor patrolling the troops and he has done exceedingly well in the first two matches, remaining unbeaten in guiding the team home in both of them. For help, he has opener Fakhar Zaman and most likely would have either Joe Denly or tom Abell for company in the upcoming game. Thus this trio holds the key for Sohail Akhtar’s men in the battle of the Punjabis. Multan in search of a death overs specialist In the two games that they have played so far, the Sultans of Muktans have met the same fate in each of them, losing it in the 19th over, after having dominated the proceedings for the first 18. In the first game, it was Sohail Tanvir who killed the game with his 19th over, in the last one, it was Shahnawaz Dhani. The Sultans would therefore be searching for someone who could bowl specifically at the death. Somebody of the likes of Sohail Khan or Imran Khan who are known for their ability to hit the yorker length need to be drafted in the XI. The batting is en route being one of the great lineups in the tournament with Mohammad Rizwan and James Vince hitting form. If Chris Lynn gets going, it would become one of the most fearsome lineups. With 112 runs, Rizwan is currently the leading run-scorer in the tournament. Lahore Qalandars vs Multan Sultans: Match Details Match Number- 07 Venue: National Stadium, Karachi Date & Time: 26 February 2021, 03:30 pm IST, 03:00 pm Local, 10:00 am GMT Broadcast and Live Stream: Sony SIX, Sony LIV Pitch Report The tournament did start with mid-range totals, but over the last two games, it has got better as the totals are getting bigger and bigger. The pitch for this game would be a fresh one and most probably one, which will have good bounce and carry and favour batsmen with the ball coming on to the bat. The fresh wicket might have some juice as well and might offer some swing early on as well. Weather Report The weather in Karachi would be ideal for playing cricket as the temperatures would range between the late 20s to early 30s. There would be sunshine and the mild chill of receding winters to compliment it, making it an ideal scenario for a cricket match without any interference from rain. As has been the tradition in the tournament so far. Skipper would look to field first after winning the toss. Probable XI Lahore Qalandars Fakhar Zaman, Sohail Akhtar (c), Mohammad Hafeez, Joe Denly, Ben Dunk (wk), Samit Patel, David Wiese, Ahmed Daniyal, Maaz Khan, Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf Multan Sultans Mohammad Rizwan (c & wk), Chris Lynn, James Vince, Rilee Rossouw, Sohaib Maqsood, Khushdil Shah, Shahid Afridi, Carlos Brathwaite, Sohail Khan, Usman Qadir, Shahnawaz Dhani Dream XI / Fantasy XI suggestions Mohammad Rizwan (c & wk), Fakhar Zaman, James Vince, Mohammad Hafeez (vc), Sohaib Maqsood, Rilee Rossouw, Carlos Brathwaite, Shahid Afridi, Usman Qadir, Haris Rauf, Shaheen Afridi
Pakistan's A team registers strong win against New Zealand A
Pakistan Shaheens, or as they would more informally be called, Pakistan A, registered a morale-boosting win over New Zealand A in the one-off unofficial Test at Whangerei on Sunday. Chasing a target of 298, the home side was bowled out for 226, losing by a margin of 89 runs. For the Shaheens, three wickets each were picked up by pacers Naseem Shah and Amad Butt while Yasir Shah, the leading leg-spinner in Test cricket today, took a couple. One wicket each went into the account of seamers Mohammad Abbas and Sohail Khan. The day started with Pakistan's second-string side, at least nominally, at 318/9 and leading by 286 runs. The pair of Naseem Shah and Mohammad Abbas added 11 runs more to the total before Matt Henry wrapped up the innings at 329, picking up his sixth wicket of the innings. The Kiwi seamer ended up with figures of 6/53. In response, no New Zealand A batsman could score even a half century. The highest scorer in the innings was Nathan Smith with 45. Captain Michael Bracewell and Joe Carter scored 30 each in the middle order. This loss for New Zealand A came after their emphatic 2-0 triump over West Indies A in the previous unofficial Test series. But this loss won't hurt that much because the Pakistan team was stacked with regular members of the main Test squad of the country. The batting line-up consisted of batsmen such as Shan Masood, Azhar Ali, Abid Ali, Fawad Alam - all part of the Test set up. The bowling line-up also included Test bowlers like Mohammad Abbas, Yasir Shah, and Naseem Shah. The biggest takeaway from this match would be the century by Fawad Alam. An enigmatic player who has been in and out of the Pakistan team's set up and treated unfairly by selectors very often, he laid another strong claim to a spot in the Test team. Since he played in the team's last series, in England, he should get reselected. For the hosts, the form of Matt Henry is encouraging. New Zealand have a top class bowling line-up with Tim Southee and Trent Boult forming, one of the best bowling duos in the world. They are backed up by the indefatigable Neil Wagner and prodigious young talent Kyle Jamieson. But Henry, who has been a regular member of the ODI team, has made the selectors take note of him and may be the back-up for either Southee or Boult, if they miss any of the matches.
