Kishan, especially took charge against the Australian bowlers, mainly targeting their spinner Tanveer Sanhga. The wicketkeeper-batter stitched a 111-run stand with Yadav, scoring a blistering 39-ball 58, which included 27 runs off Sangha alone.

Australia skipper Aaron Finch not surprised at going unsold in IPL auction

Mayank Kumar ∙ 21 Feb 2021

Australia skipper Aaron Finch not surprised at going unsold in IPL auction

Australia white-ball captain Aaron Finch would have relished the prospects of playing in the upcoming edition of the IPL given his lacklustre form in the previous edition, but he is also pragmatic about the lack of opportunity and not surprised at franchises not showing any interest in his service. Notably, Finch had put his base price at Rs 3 crore INR but went unsold in the auction that took place on February 18 in Chennai. However, he is preferring to take the positives out of it as it offers him a window to stay at home after an extended period of time away from playing for Australia and in the IPL last year. "It would've been nice to be playing again, it's an amazing competition to be a part of, but it wasn't unexpected that I didn't get picked up to be honest. I'd prefer to be playing cricket, but a little bit of time at home might not be the worst thing, having quite a full schedule since August when we left for the UK and a few times in quarantine and a lot of times in hubs and bubbles, I think just getting home and recharging the batteries might be nice. I know my wife's definitely looking forward to it,” Finch said. Finch struggled at the top of the order for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the last IPL where he could muster only 268 runs from 12 innings with an abysmal average-strike rate combination of 22.33 and 112.20. He finished the tournament with a solitary fifty and became a liability for the Virat Kohli-led side before he was axed from the playing XI. He would have hoped to resurrect his form and turn around his numbers in the Big Bash League that followed the limited-overs leg of the series against India, but his numbers sank further. He could not hit even a fifty in the 13 games in the 10th edition of the league and finished with mere 179 runs with a horrible average of 13.77 runs per innings. Now, Finch has stepped up the process to eradicate the obvious flaws such as playing the front foot in his batting in discussion with Andrew McDonald, Australia’s assistant coach. Finch said that he felt his foot movement was making him stuck in the crease and hence the efforts and precise training to make his foot mobile will help him get back among runs once he starts to play again for Australia in the upcoming tour of New Zealand. "I've been working on a few little technical things, trying to get a little bit less weight on my front foot. At times I can be a little bit flat-footed and my feet get planted and then I struggle to move again. I have my initial movement and then I get a little bit stuck. I've talked a lot and worked a fair bit with Andrew McDonald, who I go back to every time things don't seem quite right and he seems to sort it out pretty quick, so it's been nice to have a good chunk of training and focusing on a few little technical changes." Australia are touring New Zealand for a five-match T20 series starting tomorrow, February 22 where the selectors have taken a punt on younger players who have shone brightly in the recently-concluded Big Bash League. The T20 squad has been picked in a clear separation from the Test squad in a clear sign of divergence as Australia are looking to build up a strong squad to win the ICC World T20 due to be held later this year in India.

BBL Knockout: On the charge Heat look to topple batting heavyweights Thunder

BBL Knockout: On the charge Heat look to topple batting heavyweights Thunder

Brisbane having defeated Perth Scorchers in their last league game to make it to the BBL Finals and then Adelaide Strikers in the Eliminator would look to make it three in three when they face the Sydney Thunder in the Knockout at the Manuka Oval on Sunday. The winner of this game would play the loser of the qualifier between Perth Scorchers and Sydney Sixers. Heat have been able to click at the right time with the likes of Marnus Labuschagen bringing in all the energy at the right moment. However, Thunder is no pushover by any means and neither are they in a bad form. They beat Strikers comprehensively in their last game to march to the Knockout. Thus it promises to be a mouthwatering encounter at the Australian capital. Hales-storm to blow away the Heat wind Alex Hales has been in the form of his life this BBL season and is one of the main reasons why the Thunder have progressed to the Knockouts even as their Trump cards Daniel Sams (remained injured for most games) and Chris Green couldn’t deliver much. The biggest plus point of Hales’ batting is that it hasn’t been one dimensional in any way. He has hit shots all around the park and the drives, which weren’t a prominent feature of his batting, have been at display quite often. With 535 runs already in his kitty, Hales, 32 would be looking to at first go past his one highest total of 576 in a single season and then have an eye on Marcus Stoinis’ 705 as three good innings from him can not only fetch him 170 runs but also take thunder to their second BBL title as well. Alongside Hales, Tanveer Sangha’s form will play an important role too as the teenager, pumped up after the first call up for the senior Australian team, would look to go beyond his limits to get his team past the line against Heat. He has 21 wickets in 14 innings so far getting the tally up could help both his side as well as himself considering that Mini IPL auctions are nearing as well and he could be one of the biggest buys. The availability of Daniel Sams for this game is also going to be an exciting and important addition to the Thunder XI. Lynnsanity! The need of the hour for Heat The Heat has been in the mix as the likes of Labuschagne, Mitchell Swepson and Jimmy Peirson have performed in an excellent manner. However, what they would want is the skipper Chris Lynn to get going as well because when he gets going, there is no one better than him at taking the game away from the opposition. In the entire tournament, Lynn has so far been superb, barring the last game. And with 426 runs in just 11 innings, this is also the most runs he has scored in any BBL season he has played so far. Having said that he hasn’t really been able to play the ‘Lynny’ innings or get on the Lynnsanity mode, where he hits big and also get a lot more runs. His highest score this season is just 69 and therefore a better and bigger inning is expected of him. Thunder vs Heat: Match Details Match: Knockout Date and Time: 31st January 2021 01:45 pm IST, 07:15 pm Local, 08.30 am GMT Venue: Manuka Oval Broadcast and Live Streaming: Sony SIX and Sony LIV Pitch Report Manuka Oval is a ground that gives everything to a T20 fan, some swing early on, some turn in the latter part of the innings, a true bounce for the ball to come nicely on the bat and that’s all that‘s really required for a perfect game. Thus on this pitch, the thing that matters is the skill of the players and how they execute it. Weather and Bat Flip The weather in Canberra is predicted to be a bit on the chillier side with the temperature hovering between 17-21 degrees during the match hours. And with more than 70% cloud cover, swing will be on offer. The team winning the bat flip would look to bowl first without any doubt. Ten BBL players who could turn out to be best buys in IPL mini-auction

Ten BBL players who could turn out to be best buys in IPL mini-auction

With Indian Premier League sides announcing their retained players’ list, the market of speculations is high as to which team would go for which players in the mini IPL which is scheduled to take place in February this year. One league which has literally provided cricketers in bulk for the IPL has been the Australian Big Bash League. Be it last season’s products like Josh Philippe, Daniel Sams, or the great Aussie limited-overs stars of today, David Warner and Aaron Finch, all of them have had a good time in the IPL which has helped them get to where they are today. Keeping with the same practice, this year’s BBL, which is the 10th edition of the tournament, has also given some wonderful stars who could turn out to be great buys for the IPL teams. Jhye Richardson The Perth bowling all-rounder is in the form of his life in this BBL picking up 25 wickets in 13 innings in BBL 2020-21. Among these 25 wickets are his two four-wicket hauls as well. Jhye went unsold in the last two IPL auctions that he was part of, but this time around his bid for a place is strongest as he showed that he is no mug with the bat either. With his ability to make quick runs in the late overs, he could be a real asset for the teams going forward. In his year’s BBL, he has played two such innings, one against the Hurricanes, when the team had reduced to 108/6, he hit precious 36 runs to get the team up to 180 alongside Josh Inglis. In total, he is the perfect package for a team like Kings XI Punjab who have released Jimmy Neesham and are looking for a bowling all-rounder. But RCB’s coach Simon Katich’s eye would also be on him as he is a product of Western Australia, which was Katich’s home as well. Ben McDermott A genuine big hitter, Hurricanes’ Ben McDermott has shown to the world how dangerous he could be when on song as he has won matches single-handedly for his team. In 10 innings of BBL 2020-21 so far, McDermott, 26, hs hit 297 runs with an average of 44 and a strike rate that goes beyond 150 when he finds his feet on the crease. McDermott can keep and open the innings too, hence can be one of the great options for teams looking for such adoption and one such team is the Chennai Super Kings which released its opening options in Shane Watson and Murali Vijay, all at once. Alex Carey Another wicketkeeper-batsman, this time from Adelaide though is in the fray to attract a big sum from the auction after being released by the Delhi Capitals during the retention process. Carey has 381 runs in the 12 innings that he has played in BBL 2020-21. The biggest achievement of his has been the hundred that he hit in a must-win game for his team against the heat. Since has not been tried in India, teams can take a shot at him in the auction without any doubt. Riley Meredith If pure pace and accuracy were to be defined, nothing gets better than Riley Meredith of the Hurricanes. He clocks in the 140s regularly and touches the 150 mark more often than anyone else does. His economy in the BBL 10 is 7.48 and although he has only taken 12 wickets in 11 games that he has played so far, the fear that he generates in the yes of the batsmen, just with his sheer pace is something to marvel at. Teams like Kings XI Punjab and Chennai Super Kings, who are looking for out and out fast bowlers might be interested in him, even for that matter, RCB and Mumbai can go for him as well. Mumbai mainly because they now don’t have a back up for Trent Boult after Lasith Malinga left. Dawid Malan This 33-year-old South Africa born England player has gained the most in the T20 arena and him not being in the IPL’s 2020 edition was a big surprise. Now, the World Number one T20 batsmen has his eyes set on the biggest T20 league in the Wolrd and franchises too would have set their eyes on him. Although he hasn’t really had a big BBL, with just 220 runs in 8 innings at an average of 27 and a strike rate well below the expectations from him- 116. But the few innings that he has shone in, he showcased the range of shots that he has to offer. The World Number one T20 batsman is therefore a hot property and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he turns out to be the biggest buy-in this edition. Tanveer Sangha The teenager from Thunder has impressed one and all with his leg-spinning abilities this season. Getting big wickets is the most dangerous nack that he has developed. With 20 wickets in 12 innings at a brilliant average of 16.05 and an economy rate of less than eight (7.92), he is one of those players who could turn out to be lethal on Indian pitches, especially with his deceiving wrong-uns which he has used brilliantly so far. He is just 19 and has a lot to achieve, the franchises like CSK and Mumbai who invest in the talent can take him just for the fact that he could be useful in the future as a leg spinner has always been in the IPL. Mujeeb-Ur-Rahman The Afghan youngster is not new to the IPL scenes although success has eluded him so far. This time around he is coming on the back of a successful BBL and has done well even in the Caribbean Premier League this season. While in BBL, he picked up 14 wickets from 8 innings at an astonishing average of 13.42 and a brilliant economy of 6.26. In CPL, he picked up 16 wickets in 11 games and his average was 13.56 while the economy went even below six. With just 17 wickets from 18 IPL games he hasn’t really had the success he would like, but with a few good games and the mojo back with him, he can do wonders for whichever team that he plays. Alex Hales This England star has been in and out of IPL many times. But with the form that he is in as seen during the BBL 2020-21, he is sure to get another crack at the jack called IPL. He might not be one of the expensive buys in this year’s auction but can be an effective one on the base price as he can hit a long ball on flat tracks and looks like a perfect replacement for Aaron Finch for the RCB. The 32-year-old has 462 runs in 12 innings in the BBL10 with an average of 38.59 and a damaging strike rate of more than 165. He has hit a scintillating hundred in one of the toughest games of the season the ‘Sydney Smash’ and has two fifties to boast of as well. Wes Agar If a team wants a bowler who can ball heavy balls, great bouncers, and yorkers at will, the team has to look for nothing beyond the gigantic Wes Agar from the Adelaide Strikers. Agar has 21 wickets in 12 games with 4/27 as his best and with an average of 17.14 and an economy of below eight. What is fascinating about him is his pace. He bowls real quick and effort balls generally fetch him a wicket. In the limited opportunities that he got in the previous BBL, even then he was among wickets, and thus he could be a real cheat deal at the base price for teams looking for heavy fast bowlers. RCB, KXIP, and CSK can have shot at him. Mark Steketee Another fast bowler in the reckoning is Mark Steketee of the Brisbane Heat. Steketee, 27 has got loads of experience behind his back apart from a good BBL form with 22 wickets from 12 games. In 49 T20s that he has played so far, he has picked up 64 wickets in them clearly giving signs that he is a wicket-taking bowler. With two fifties in the first class, he has the ability to handle the willow as well. Thus he is one of those who could be given their first shot at the world’s biggest stage of T20 cricket.

BBL10 | Preview: Thunder face Sixers in Sydney Smash as they fight for survival

It is going to be a battle for survival for the Thunder as they take on the cross-town rivals Sixers in what is going to be the most important game of their campaign in Adelaide. The Men in Fluorescent Green have lost three games in a row and hence what was looking like a certainty a few days ago, their chances of making it to the Playoffs have gotten slimmer by the day. This match is also important because if they are not able to win this one, the would-be facing Adelaide in two games straightaway at the Strikers’ home ground, winning those two matches on the trot would become very difficult, especially considering the form of the Strikers in their last game against the Heat. In this second Smash of the season, apart from all these things, avenging the last defeat would also be somewhere in the corner of all Thunder men's minds. Ferguson must find the right match The problem with the Thunder team in the last three games have been the throwing away of the wickets and all key batsmen getting out all at once. It is something that the team needs to look at and address as soon as possible. Even after having the top four as strong as they have with the likes of Alex Hales, Usman Khawaja, Ferguson himself, and then Billings coming at four, they haven’t really been able to utilize the death overs or even the power surge. On a batting-friendly Adelaide track, it would hence be necessary for skipper Ferguson to either anchor the innings or delegate it to someone like Khawaja and then let there be a free flow of runs from the other end. Similarly in the bowling department, their dependence on just Daniel Sams wouldn’t do any good as he wouldn’t be available for the three most important games of the Thunder campaign after getting a bone and ligament injury against Hurricanes at Manuka Oval. It is therefore important that the rest of the fast bowlers strategize their areas to bowl in and which overs they will bowl alongside the two spinners in Tanveer Sangha and Chris Green. Henriques, Abbott boost to the Sixers Already in a very strong position as of now, the Sixers have been given a big boost in the form of their skipper Moises Henriques and fast bowling all-rounder Sean Abbott joining them in the Sydney Smash. While this would pose selection problems, but at the same time, it is going to be a real challenge for the opposition to face a stronger Sixers team than they faced last time around at Manuka. With Josh Philippe and Steve O’Keefe in the best of their forms and two great all-rounders in Dan Christian and Carlos Brathwaite already available and going great, the inclusion of Henriques and Abbot is something that will boost the chances of Sixers going 2-0 in the Sydney Smash this year, until and unless Thunder find some inspiration from within. Sixers vs Thunder: Match Details Match Number- 48 Date and Time- Jan 22, 2021, 01:45:00 pm IST, 07:15pm Local, 08.15 am GMT Venue- Adelaide Oval Broadcast- Sony LIV, Sony Sports Network Pitch Report The Adelaide wicket looks like a usual T20 wicket with a lot of runs scoring opportunities for batsmen and the bowlers have to really slog it out to get desired results. The only way bowlers can overpower the men with the willow in their hands is by being consistent with their variations. Bowling length or in a particular channel wouldn’t help on this wicket until and unless you have 200 runs in the kitty. Weather and Bat Flip The skies are going to be clear and the temperature perfectly all right for a cricket game hovering in the twenties of teh celsius. In such a situation, a skipper winning the toss would go for fielding first, although batting first wouldn’t be a bad option either, especially for Sixers to put pressure on the Thunder batsmen by scoring big in the first innings. Strongest XI Sixers Josh Philippe (wk), Daniel Hughes, James Vince, Moises Henriques(c), Jordan Silk, Daniel Christian, Carlos Brathwaite, Steve O'Keefe, Sean Abbott, Jake Ball, Lloyd Pope Strongest XI Thunder Usman Khawaja, Alex Hales, Callum Ferguson (c), Sam Billings (wk), Chris Tremain, Oliver Davies, Ben Cutting, Nathan McAndrew, Chris Green, Adam Milne, Tanveer Sangha
