Match Report: Zak Evans five-for puts Hurricanes out of the BBL race

Melbourne Renegades finally pulled off the surprise that everybody had been waiting for as they became a party pooper for Hobart Hurricanes and their fans, beating the men in purple by 11 runs at the MCG in what was a must-win game for the latter. Zak Evans was the hero of the game picking up 5-33 in his four overs. Chasing a modest total of 151, the Hurricanes couldn’t get to a desirable start as they lost the skipper Matthew Wade at the score of 26, in only the third over of the innings. From there onwards, it was a struggle for the ‘Canes batsmen as their highest run-getter Ben Mcdermott got out without giving much trouble to the scorers as he was bowled by the young Peter Hartzgolu for just one. Dawid Malan, D’Arcy Short, Peter Handscomb, and Tim David, none of them could do what was expected of them as the Hurricanes lost wickets at regular intervals. Both Malan and Short had eaten up a lot of deliveries to get settled and just when the pressure built, they threw away their wickets, putting Hurricanes in all sorts of danger. The situation came down to 21 off the last over with the bowlers in form of Nathan Ellis and Scot Boland at the crease. Eventually, their innings ended at 139-9 in the 20 overs. With this loss, the Hurricanes crashed out of the race to the BBL 10 Finals even after being at equal points with Adelaide Strikers (28 points each) on the basis of the net run rate. Earlier in the afternoon, Hurricanes after winning the toss chose to field first and their bowlers did prove the decision right as, after the first 10 overs, they had Renegades on their knees at 58/4. But after that, Mackenzie Harvey and Beau Webster added 63 off 46 balls before Webster cased on and got a fifty (54 off 35) even as Harvey got out for 40. This result has now made the Stars vs Sixers game yet another interesting affair as a win with the Bash Boost for the Glenn maxwell side would see them into the BBL Finals and would knock out the Strikers.

BBL10 | Preview: Heat up against party spoilers Renegades to save their campaign

Brisbane Heat after being humiliated by the Adelaide Strikers in their most important game of the season would now be up against a Melbourne Renegades side that defeated Stars in their last game to make sure that everyone notices their potential. It would be a tough game for the Heat as the Renegades team has nothing to lose, but the Blue Brigades are still in with a chance if they are able to win both of their remaining games and certain results of other teams, go their way. Heat bank on world-class batting lineup Chris Lynn the skipper Darren Lehmann the coach of the Heat would bank on their strong batting lineup to deliver at the time of crisis which they were unable to do in the last game. The likes of Joe Burns, Joe Denly, and Marnus Labuschagne alongside the captain Lynn are more than enough to send jitters down any bowling lineup. There however needs to be a change as to how things should go as too many similar kinds of batsmen are batting in the same team. Any one of the three among Marnus, Denly, and Burns would have to attack from the word as the team can’t afford to go into a shell as and when Lynn goes out. All-rounders like Lewis Gregory, Jack Wildermuth, and James Bazley also need to show character and stand for the team with both the bat and the ball to get a win and try to keep the campaign going. Renegades would like the young guns to keep going While all the experience guns of Renegades be it, Shaun Marsh, Riley Russow, or even skipper Aaron Finch hasn’t really been able to get going in this tournament, youngsters like Mackenzie Harvey, Peter Hatzoglou, Jack Prestwidge along with Jake Fraser-McGurk have really shown the world what they are made up of. It is these guys only who would be up against an experienced Heat lineup and try and execute their skills. They become even more dangerous because they don’t come with any baggage to prove to anyone and hence express themselves freely. Renegades vs Heat: Match Details Match Number- 49 Date and Time- Jan 22, 2021, 10:35:00 am IST, 04:05pm Local, 05.05 am GMT Venue- Dockland, Melbourne Broadcast- Sony LIV, Sony Sports Network Pitch Report In the two games that have so far been played at the docklands, it has been seen that the pitch is good for a batsman who gets his eye in and not for someone who starts hitting from the first ball without getting hang of the line and length and the pace of the wicket. It has so far produced two very good encounters so far and the same thing is expected from it going forward. Weather and Bat Flip The weather of Melbourne for tomorrow is going to be a bit cloudy and with the pitch so far assisting swing it would be a good wicket to bowl on early on and then it is going to get better with time. Hence the team winning the toss would look to field first. Renegades Strongest XI Aaron Finch (c), Shaun Marsh, Sam Harper (wk), Jake Fraser-McGurk, Mackenzie Harvey, Beau Webster, Imad Wasim, Jack Prestwidge, Josh Lalor, Zak Evans, Peter Hatzoglou Heat Strongest XI Joe Burns, Chris Lynn (c), Joe Denly, Marnus Labuschagne, Lewis Gregory, Jimmy Peirson (wk), Jack Wildermuth, Mark Steketee, Xavier Bartlett, Mitchell Swepson, James Bazley

There is no end to Renegades' misery as Finch and Co. lose seven in a row

Melbourne Renegades’ miserable BBL 10 campaign continued on its distraught path as Aaron Finch and Co. lost yet another match which they should have won. The Renegades were beaten comprehensively by a huge margin of 60 runs by the Adelaide Strikers, even while chasing a par total of 172 runs at the Adelaide Oval. The match was over in the 10th over Although the scorecard will show that Renegades got out of the reach of the match probably after the power surge, however the match for the Red Machine was lost in the 10th over itself when they needed four runs to get from that over to get the Bash Boost point, but instead of going for those runs, Mohammad Nabi decided to play three balls and got only one run, even as Sam Harper had got out playing a rash short just before him. With one ball in hand, young Mackenzy Harvey needed to score three runs, but of course, he could not as Danny Briggs bowled a brilliant over to defend the four runs, giving away just a solitary single. 'Gades can't seem to get out of the hole The Renegades team got into a hole after that and much like every match, in this game too there was no coming out of it. Even after losing Aaron Finch off the first ball, the ‘Gades had an impressive start courtesy of some cracking shots from two youngsters in Harper and Harvey. They put on 67 runs off 55 balls but most importantly set up a platform for the likes of Nabi, Beau Webster, and Jake Fraser-McGurk to get on with it. But that did not happen as Nabi was choked for the flow of runs and even after playing 16 balls, which included four dots in the power surge, could only score seven runs. Similar was the case for Webster and Imad Wasim who couldn’t just get on with the game. McGurk on the other hand came too late to create any difference. Worst Power Surge ever This was the worst power surge in the history of the BBL as Renegades could only score five runs of the two overs and lost two wickets in the process as well. Firstly Nabi was served four yorkers by Wes Agar, the fourth one getting his wicket, and then in the second over Peter Siddle worked his magic and got rid of Imad Wasim by conceding just three runs. Danny Briggs the game changer The England Pro Briggs was once again at his best throwing in yorkers at will and not letting the run rate. He bowled four overs and gave away just 17 runs for two wickets. At one stage the Sussex man had figures of 1/8 in just three overs. It was he who stopped the flow of runs as Rashid Khan the premium spinner of the Strikers wasn’t at his best today. The Weatherald-Gibson Earlier in the day, Strikers after winning the toss had decided to bat first. But the decision really didn’t go their way as they lost Phil Salt early at the score of 14 runs in the fourth over. After that skipper, Alex Carey and Matt Renshaw built a slow but steady partnership of 54 runs before spinners in Nabi and Imad pulled on their tricks and from 68/1 the Strikers were soon 72/4. But after that Jake Weatherald and Ryan Gibson built a 53 ball 98 run partnership during which they hit Josh Lalor for 23 runs in one over and got a total of 67 runs from their last five, taking the total to 171, which at one point of the time looked impossible. What's Next? Strikers with this victory have now moved on to the fourth position and will take on Renegades in a reverse leg game on 8th January. Renegades on the other hand seemed to have lost any confidence that they might have had coming into this game and would look to play for pride from now onwards.
