Player Bio

Bjorn Fortuin might not be a big name in the international circuit but has managed to establish himself as a reliable all-rounder in the domestic circuit. Fortuin is a quality left-arm spinner and a handy lower-order batter. The all-rounder is a South African professional cricketer who represents North West and Lions domestically.

Having made his first-class debut for North West in 2013, Fortuin was dismissed for a duck in his debut game. However, it was in October 2017 when Fortuin hogged the limelight during a first-class match against the Knights bagging 6 wickets for 78 runs. His spell ensured that his team got a huge lead of 203 runs in the 1st innings. Owing to his great showing with the ball, Fortuin was included in South Africa A squad that toured India in July 2017.

Then,  in 2018, he was included in the Highveld Lions squad for the 2018-19 season. After performing admirably he was selected in the Paarl Rocks side for the inaugural edition of the Mzansi Super League. Owing to impressive performances in the domestic circuit, he was awarded a place in the South African side for the T20I series against India in 2019. Making his debut at Mohali he scalped the wicket of Rishabh Pant. In his second T20I, the spinner bettered his performance as he ended the game with the figure of 2 for 19, including wickets of Pant and Shreyas Iyer. Later in 2020, he was part of the squad that took on the World Champions at home. He played a couple of T20Is and made his ODI debut against England at Centurion in February 2020, but didn’t bat or bowl in the rain-affected match.

In 2021, the South African toured Pakistan and then was part of the team that hosted them at home. Later in May, the national selectors picked the spinning all-rounder for the full-fledged tour to the West Indies. And with the World T20 heading, a spinner like Fortuin could be the heartthrob in the slow Asian conditions.
