BBL 2021-22 | Ben McDermott hits powerful century to drive Hurricane's big win over Adelaide Strikers

Ben McDermott continued his red-hot form with the bat and scored his second T20 century to lift the Hobart Hurricanes for a big win over the Adelaide Strikers in the 22nd game of the ongoing edition of the Big Bash League. He launched a brutal onslaught against Strikers’ bowlers and thumped a 60-ball 110 with the help of 12 fours and five big. He did not get out and walked back to the dugout only after winning the game for the Hurricanes to clinch the Man of the Match award from the game. Chasing a target of 176 runs which would have appeared a stiff one after the fall of an early wicket in the form of Matthew Wade, but the partnership between McDermott and D’Arcy Short took the attack to the Strikers’ bowling attack. Strikers’ bowlers, in particular, George Garton Wes Agar travelled the journey and conceded 30 runs and 44 runs in their three overs and three and a half overs stint in the game. Earlier, the Strikers won the toss and the skipper Peter Siddle asked his batsmen to put runs on the board. They were rocked early when Tom Rogers pinned Matthew Short in front of the stumps but they too had a similar repair work as the Hurricanes went to produce in their chasing effort. Jake Weatherald find timely boundaries and allowed Matt Renshaw to flourish from the other end. The duo brought a partnership of 118 runs from 79 balls and the Strikers were in with a chance to post a huge total. Thomas Kelly got them to the point where they intended to reach with a quickfire 18-ball 28 and the Hurricanes could not stop the Strikers from posting a huge total. Riley Meredith picked up three wickets but could not stem the flow of runs and the Strikers were made to chase a big total. With the win, the Hurricanes succeeded in resurrecting their run in the tournament and rankings on the points table with three wins and as many losses in six games this season while on the other hand, the Strikers slipped further on the table and have only won against their names from six games of this season.

BBL 11 | Matthew Wade’s captain’s knock and bowlers guide Renegades to victory past Sixers

BBL 11 | Matthew Wade’s captain’s knock and bowlers guide Renegades to victory past Sixers

Sydney Sixers’ two-match unbeaten run in the Big Bash League 2021-22 came to an end as they were defeated by a class performance from the Hobart Hurricanes, playing away from home at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Matthew Wade, the Hurricanes’ skipper was the star of the show with the bat, as he just missed out on what could have been one of the perfect hundreds in BBL history. Along with him, the Hobart bowlers too played an important role in the team’s huge 44 runs victory. Sixers, who were set a target of 214 in 20 overs initially but which was later reduced to 195 in 18 overs due to Duckworth Lewis and Stern method, had a good enough start, making 61 in the first seven overs without losing a wicket. However, Josh Philippe was the only batter that was able to strike cleanly even ss James Vince and skipper Moises Henriques tried to help him as much as possible. At 118-2, when Philippe finally got out after surviving four close shaves including a dropped dolly and ab easy stumping, the chances of Sixers slimmed further. With 77 needed off 19 balls, it was almost certain that the things were not moving in a direction that they should have been. The batters that came, later on, weren’t able to provide any magic either as the team could score only 151 in their 18 overs. Joel Paris was the pick of the bowlers for the Hurricanes as he took three wickets and gave away only 35 runs in his four-over spell. Earlier in the evening, after winning the toss, Hurricanes had decided to bat first and even after a slow start by D’Arcy Short, Wade kept on waging the war against the Sixers’ bowling unit. When the left-handed wicketkeeper batter got out at 93 in the 12th over, the team score was 111. However, it was only past Wade’s dismissal that Short started to open up. After being 16 off 22 balls at the time of Wade’s dismissal, Short went on to score 57 off the next 29 balls that he faced. He remained unbeaten at 73 off 51 balls. Caleb Jewell was the other batter that got among the runs and was out only in the last over after having scored 42 off 23 balls and put on a 92 run stand with Short for the second wicket.

Hampshire rope in D'Arcy Short for Vitality T20 Blast

Hampshire have roped in the services of hard-hitting Australian opening batsman D’Arcy Short for the upcoming Vitality T20 Blast which is slated to kick off on 9th June. Short is not only a big hitter of the ball but lends balance to the squad with his useful left-arm spin. Short can chip in with some crucial overs in the middle and has the ability to break partnerships. Short who is yet to establish himself in the international circuit has been in and around the core group for quite some time now. The southpaw has donned the national colours on 31 occasions so far across the two white-ball formats. Short has plied his trade in several T20 tournaments across the world and has impressive returns so far in his career so far. The southpaw have scored nearly 4000 T20 runs besides bagging 48 wickets with his chinaman. "I am so excited to join a club with as much history as Hampshire Hawks! I can't wait to get to The Ageas Bowl and hopefully we can have a strong season and win our first title since 2012," Short was quoted by Cricbuzz. This won't be the first time that Short will be plying his trade in the T20 Blast. Earlier he had a stint with Durham in 2019. He had a wonderful time with the bat amassing 483 runs at an impressive average of 43.90. Meanwhile, Director of Cricket, Hampshire, Giles White was quite thrilled to sign Short as he felt that the dashing left-hander’s inclusion will “add spark” to the team dynamics for the 2021 edition of the T20 Blast. "We are delighted to secure the signing of D'Arcy for this summer's Vitality Blast competition. He is a high-class performer who has consistently shown his ability to score a high volume of runs at the top of the order, both for Australia and in a number of the world's best T20 competitions,” White said. "Alongside his skill with the bat, he also gives us another spin bowling option with the ball so we're excited about what he brings to the side and are looking forward to having him with us," he further added.

BBL 10 | Sixers vs Hurricanes: Hobart's final dash keept alive with 7-run victory

BBL 10 | Sixers vs Hurricanes: Hobart's final dash keept alive with 7-run victory

The Hobart Hurricanes kept their chances alive in the Big Bash League after winning the 52nd match of the Big Bash League against the Sydney Sixers by 8 runs. Riding on some spectacular batting between the opening duo of Matthew Wade and D’Arcy Short, the Hurricanes posted a more than competitive score of 189 on the board and in the end, it proved to be just enough as the Sixers fell short by 8 runs despite a valiant effort from the blade of Jordan Silk. Chasing a target of 189 was never going to be easy for the Sixers but with the batting line-up they had, it was always on the cards. However, the start for the Sixers was far from impressive. Josh Philippe played a sensational shot to begin the innings but 3 quick wickets put them in the backfoot. Nathan Elis and Scott Boland provided the much-needed breakthroughs and they need a partnership to harbour hopes of clawing their way back into the match. From there on it was a great partnership between Jordan Silk and Moises Henriques which helped them claw their way back into the match. Both the batters executed some good proper cricketing shots and kept the required ret under check. Yet again there was a shift in the momentum of the match when Sandeep Lamichhane bagged two back to back wickets to help the Hurricanes storm their way back into the game. While the first delivery wasn’t great but the second one was quite brilliant which breached through the defence of Daniel Christian. He was playing for the leg break but it turned out to be a googly and breached through his defence to disturb the timbers. Again the Hurricanes needed to resurrect the chase with a good partnership. Jordan Silk waged a lone battle but kept losing partners at the other end which made the run chase that much difficult. With 29 required of the final over, Riley Meredith faltered a bit with two no-balls which gave the Sixers a realistic chance. However, in the end, the target was just a bit too much as the Hurricanes registered a 7 runs victory to keep their hopes alive in the tournament. Earlier in the day, it was Syndey Sixers skipper Moises Henriques who won the toss and put the oppositions in. The opening partnership was quite staggering as Matthew Wade and D'Arcy Short literally tormented the opposition bowlers with their free-flowing strokeplay which they were lacking during the course of the tournament. Wade, in particular, looked in ominous touch and everything he touched turned to gold. He kept plundering the Sixers all around the park en route to his knock of 86 of 44 deliveries which were studded with 10 fours and 3 sixes. Short also played a stunning knock of 72 and shared a mammoth 145 runs partnership for the opening wicket with Wade. The Hurricanes were looking set to score well in excess of 200 but the Sixers bowlers made a staggering comeback in the back end of the innings and restricted them to 189. It has always been difficult chasing at the MCG but the Sixers were there in the game till the dying moments of the match. In the end, it was the Hurricanes who held their nerves and eeked out a narrow victory. They are currently occupying the 5th position with 27 points and on par with the Sydney Thunder who occupies the 4th position.

BBL 1O | Match Report: Scorchers fetch fifth consecutive win, make light work of Hurricanes at Perth

BBL 1O | Match Report: Scorchers fetch fifth consecutive win, make light work of Hurricanes at Perth

The Perth Scorchers continued their scintillating form in the 10th edition of the Big Bash League winning their fifth game on the trot as they defeated the Hobart Hurricanes by a huge margin of nine wickets with 22 balls to spare. The winning runs were scored as Jason Roy hooked one to fine leg and the ball fell short of Sandeep Lamichhanne stationed there for just that sort of a shot. The fielder made a complete mess of it, unable to even find the ball. That, however, quite literally summed up Hurricanes’ day in the office, where nothing went their way. The Englishman led the way for Scorchers It was the two Englishmen in Roy and Liam Livingstone that nearly saw their team through before a little lapse in concentration saw Livingstone get caught just before the victory was ensured. But before that the pair added 1213 runs for the opening stand, the second-highest partnership in this edition after Glenn Maxwell and Nicholas Pooran’s 125 runs partnership against the Sydney Sixers. The two openers took the game away from the Hurricanes quite early as changing a target of 140, they never looked like being hurried and played their shots freely. While Livingstone made 54 off 39, Roy, who was adjudged Man of the Match scored a balanced 52 ball 74. This was also the first fifty of Roy in this season of the BBL. The only chance for Hurricanes went begging Having got to a very average total, Hurricanes’ bowlers started off nicely and got past the edge of Roy and Livingstone early on. This pressure created by ‘Canes pace brigade induced a mistake from Livingstone when he was naught. The catch went straight to D’Arcy Short at the point, it was a dolly but Short was in motion when the ball reached him and as a result, he dropped a sitter. From there onwards, no chances were given to the Hurricanes whatsoever. Jhye Richardson and the Scorcher's bowling attack As was expected before the game, it would be a fight between Scorchers’ bowlers and the Hurricanes' batting. Scorchers however got the better of the visitors as the highest wicket-taker in the league so far, Jhye Richardson broke the opening partnership of highest run-getter in the series Ben McDermott and D’Arcy Short. Richardson won the battle of the number ones by getting McDermott played on in just the third over of the game. Soon after Dawid Malan was choked as well. Having scored not even a single run of five deliveries faced so far, Malan tried to break free and hit one in the air which was gulped at mid-on quite easily off Jason Behrendorff. The situation of the Hurricanes got so worse that even after 8 overs they just had 30 odd runs on the board and soon skipper Peter Handscomb too got out to make it even worse. Mitchell Owen a bright young prospect The only positive out of this game for the Hurricanes was 19 years old Micthell Owen who showed glimpses of the potential that he has hitting established bowlers like Andrew Tye and Richardson for four on deliveries that were hard to hit. The youngster made 11 off seven deliveries and looked like a busy player who wanted to dominate, no matter what. Although in the bowling department, he got a bit of a tonking as he gave away 18 runs in the only over that he bowled in the game. Apart from Owen, Short getting back in form and Tim David finding his mojo with big hits was also a plus point that Hurricanes must utilize in the next few games. What's Next? With three losses in the last five games and three of them in a row, the Hurricanes for the first time in the tournament find themselves in a worry. Now they don’t have any other option but to win at least three of their last four games to give themselves a shot at qualifying for the Playoffs. They now have another four days to think about and inspire themselves to face the Thunder at the Manuka Oval on 18th January. Scorchers on the other hand would look to continue on their winning trail as they face Sixers at Manuka Oval on 16th.
