A dashing southpaw, Mahela Udawatte is a professional cricketer for the Sri Lankan national team. Known for his firing starts at the top of the order, Udawatte was snubbed from the Sri Lankan U-19 team in 2003 even after scoring over 1000 runs in age-group cricket.

The Colombo-born southpaw finally got his opportunity to showcase his skills when he was selected to play domestically for Chillaw Marians Cricket Club in 2005. After making his debut in first-class cricket, Udawatte was named in the 30-man squad for the 2007 World Cup but failed to make it into the final list of 15.

The 35-year old made his ODI debut against West Indies on April 10th, 2008 and later that November played his last ODI against Zimbabwe. After just a handful of international appearances under his belt, he was sidelined from the ODI squad after failing to secure his spot in the playing XI.

After a few record-breaking seasons in the domestic circuit, Udawatte was recalled back to the national squad for the Test series against West Indies when most of the senior players pulled out. He scored just 23 runs the entire series and never got the opportunity to don the Sri Lankan jersey again.
