Player Bio

Born in Colombo, Santhush Gunathilake is a right-hand batsman, who predominantly plays in the middle-order for Colts Cricket Club. Gunathilake made his first class debut for Ragama Cricket Club in the 2018-19 domestic season and is yet to make his international debut despite being in the Test squad to face South Africa in 2020. Prior to making a debut for his domestic team, Gunathilake was selected in Sri Lanka’s squad for the ICC U19 World Cup in 2018.

Gunathilake had a great first season playing for Ragama cricket club, where he amassed 680 runs, at an average of 45.33. He made his List A debut in December 2019, playing for the Colts Cricket Club.

His List A record is not as impressive as his First Class record, and has scored a mere 71 runs in 3 matches at an average of 35.50.

Owing to his impressive First Class record, Sri Lankan management decided to select Gunathilake in the Test squad to face South Africa in December 2020. However, he did not play in any of the two Test matches as Sri Lanka lost the series.

Gunathilake made his T20 debut on March 4, 2021, playing for the Colts Cricket Club in the 2020-21 SLC T20 Tournament.

Still very early into his international career, Gunathilake has all the tools to succeed at the highest level. He has to remain patient as the chances should eventually arrive at his doorsteps at the right time. Sri Lankan management should nurture Gunathilake for the future. He averages well over 40’s for his domestic side and has shown glimpses of what he can do if provided with proper opportunity.
