So that’s that and it’s the Spirit Women who have secured an emphatic win by six wickets.
It were the Tornadoes who opted to bat first and posted a solid first innings total of 150. The openers got off to a good start as they compiled a 44 run stand from six overs. Dane van Niekerk took the onus of charging early as she breezed to 28 (14) before getting bowled to Nicola Carey.
However, Sterre Kalis and Stafanie Taylor then pushed the momentum forward as they struck a terrific 81 run partnership for the second wicket. Kalis played the role of an anchor with her 37 (45), whereas, Stafanie Taylor was the standout for the Tornadoes as she got herself to a quickfire 61 (48) with 10 fours to her name.
The partnership and more significantly Taylor’s knock with the bat got her side to a target worth defending.
For Spirit, it was Sophia Dunkley's wrist-spin that impressed the most as she bowled a spell of 2/20 from four.
The run chase started off in an underwhelming manner for the Spirit Women who lost two early wickets for just nine runs. Both, Sophia Dunkley 2 (5) and Bismah Maroof 1 (5) had to walk back cheaply with Chanida Sutthiruang and Aliyaz Raz chipping in with the wickets.
Kerry-Anne Tomlinson and Natthakan Chantham did consolidate and stabilize things at the middle for a brief while.
The Spirit Women required 64 runs from 10 overs in order to secure the bonus point and advance into the semis. Just when Tomlinson looked to switch gears, she was dismissed by Sita Rana Magar for 16 (23).
However, that's where things took a significant change as the Spirit captain Nicola Carey stormed her way through the team total of 64 runs in under 10 overs to attain the bonus point.
She didn't chose to stop there as Carey took the game by the scruff of the neck and went for the kill. Nicola Carey played a trailblazing knock of an unbeaten 84 (28)* and was accompanied by Natthakan Chantham 35 (29)* as the duo struck a match winning partnership of 73 from just 27 balls right till the end.
That said, Nicola Carey's innings with six fours, seven sixes and a strike rate of 285.71 will definitely go down as one of the tournament's best ever, if not the very best.
As for the Tornadoes, it was Aliya Riaz who did well with her spell for 2/14 from three overs.
Stafanie Taylor's side have had a gloomy tournament and remain winless so far. The Tornadoes will most certainly want to brush themselves off as they look to play for pride in their final fixture.
