What a batting masterclass we have witnessed tonight from Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli as they see their team home with plenty of deliveries left. A lot of thinking to do for Rohit Sharma and co before playing the next game.

For now, it's me AkshayaKrishna Polya signing off on behalf of my co-commentators Arijit Kundu and Ninaad Dixit, who alongside our scorer/analyst Paras Yadav brought you all the live-action of this mouth-watering fixture. Join us for matches across the world. We will meet tomorrow again. Until then, it's a goodbye!
Faf du Plessis (RCB Captain and POTM): "It was nice for us to start the way we did in the powerplay. Siraj with his tail up is a beautiful thing to see isn't it? The confidence that he got the last few months playing for India is really important for us so he set the tone really well for us. Our bowlers stuck to their task really well. The last 2 or 3 overs there's a bit of learning to try and improve at the death there. When you are asked how to bat in a chase, that is a pretty good example.

The cutters were working really well so if you took some pace off the ball, it wasn't so easy to hit the ball. If you got in some good positions and played some good cricketing shots there was value for that as well. Credit to the groundsmen for making a fantastic wicket. Even the spinners, there was something for them if you bowl in good areas. Really good allround cricket wicket.

Its my first time playing here as a home player. Always a special place and the atmosphere especially when you are batting with Virat Kohli. That energy that comes off him and also the crowd, how they get behind you. Its a special place.

You have to try and keep up with the youngsters and put in the work. I try and make sure that I still push the old hamstrings so I can move as quickly as I wanna move on the field like in the young days. So its very important for me to keep doing that. Staying fit and making sure that I play as much cricket as possible.

The confidence, the start of campaign. All of us are confidence players. You want to start a tournament with a band so that will be huge for both of us to get that confidence going."

This is the 11th consecutive defeat for MI in the season opener.
Faf du Plessis is the player of the match.
Virat Kohli: "I thought it was a phenomenal win. A homecoming after four years. I thought we were pretty balanced till the end of the game. We were good with the ball as well, slipt a few runs in the last few overs. Would credit their batters. Faf started with the bat, I joined him later. It was pretty good and hope it would help our run-rate going in the future.

The way they batted in the last two overs, was brilliant. Me and Faf hit some decent areas and kept putting pressure on their bowlers which was crucial. In a way we nullified them with outr initial approach. It was a packed crowd and every seat was full when we were there. We knew we would get a support like this. The intensity of the crowd propels us to do well.

I think it was phenomenal from him [Karn Sharma].
He had a good domestic season, unfortunately missed out last season. That comes from a reputation of bowling in bright spots. He was ready to play. Even in the nets, he was not getting hit for sixes. He got a couple of big wickets and got us in a good place. To come and perform against Mumbai Indians in the first game and amidst crowd like Chinnaswami, it was amazing.

Look, I wanted to mention it. Apart from Mumbai winning it five times and Chennai winning it four times, we are the third team who have played the playoffs eight times. We try to be the best-balanced side in the tournament. We need to keep building on the momentum and need to execute the plans going forward."
Rohit Sharma (Mumbai Indians Captain): "Didn't have the great start with the bat in the first six overs but I thought it was a good effort towards the end from Tilak specially and few of the other batters to bat around him and get us to 170 was a great effort but then we didn't turn up with the ball. Didn't execute what we spoke of. But these things happen. First game of the season, we need to know. We need to get those things right which we are speaking of. I think we didn't batted well enough to get enough runs. That was a good pitch to bat on.

He is a verry positive person. Quite talented as well. Some of the shots he played today - being the first game of the season, he showed a lot of courage. That is something we spoke of, we want to be brave, we want to be courageous enough out in the middle but we didn't start well with the bat and it then was always that catching up game. Hats off to Tilak to get us to a competitive total there.

If you look at the pitch, it was a good pitch to bat on. We didn't set any target as such but you saw we didn't even bat to half of our potential and we still ended up getting 170. So probably 30-40 runs more would have been ideal. But we didn't start well and were struggling to play the catchup game. Tilak was magnificent.

For the past 6-8 months I am used to playing without Jasprit Bumrah. This is a different set up but someone needs to put their hand up and come in and fill that place. We can't keep dwelling on it. Things that are in your control you can try and control that. Injuries are not in your control so cannot really do much about it. The other guys we have around are quite talented as well. Lot of these guys haven't played IPL before so you need to give them support and encouragement. Its just first game of the season, we've got a lot to look forward."
Royal Challengers Bangalore won the toss and decided to have a bowl first in their home return after four years. The decision proved alright by the RCB bowlers as they reduced the five-time champions to 20/3 inside the powerplay. All the big names of Ishan Kishan, Cameron Green and Rohit Sharma failed to show resistance against the fiery RCB new ball bowlers.

Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma added 28 runs for the 4th wicket as they tried to rebuild the innings. The IPL debutant Michael Bracewell broke this stand with the wicket of scratchy-looking Suryakumar in the 9th over. But the partnership of 50 runs for the 5th wicket between Varma and the debutant Nehal Wadhera gave the glucose that the team needed. While the former was steering the ship with occasional boundaries, the latter took a few balls before opening up. Wadhera (21 off 13) impressed one and all by tonking a couple of lusty blows to Karn Sharma, but the leg-break bowler had the last laugh as he picked the wicket of Wadhera in the very next ball.

MI lost Tim David and Hrithik Shokeen in a span of a couple of overs and were reeling at 123/7 at the beginning of the 18th over and were in deep waters. But a stunning partnership between Tilak Varma and Arshad Khan helped the side post a good total after facing a scarcity of batters on the crease. The duo stitched 48 runs for the 8th wicket and broke down the death bowling ability of the home side. While Varma was unbeaten on an impressive 84 off 46 balls including 9 fours and 4 sixes, Arshad remained not out at 15 off 9 balls to propel MI to 171/7 in their allotted 20 overs.

RCB used 7 bowlers with Siraj, Akash Deep, Reece Topley, Bracewell, and Harshal Patel scalping a wicket each. But the impressive performance came from the leg break bowler Karn Sharma who finished with the figures of 4-0-32-2. One can say that RCB lost Topley to injury and hence taken for runs in the slog overs but you can't anything away from the youngster Tilak Varma.
11:02 PM IST | This is a sublime start to the season's IPL for the well-known Royal Challengers Bangalore! They tear apart Mumbai Indians here in M.Chinnaswamy Stadium and it's time for the celebration for the Red Army!

Chasing the competitive target 172, RCB veteran openers Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli batted like beasts and hammered each and every MI bowlers to all parts of the ground. The shots they played were pleasing to the eyes and gave a perfect homecoming for the hosts. While du Plessis smashed his 26th IPL fifty, Virat Kohli amassed his 45th IPL half-century. Amidst these both smoked delightful boundaries with the South African scoring 5 fours and 6 sixes, while the Indian star tonked 6 fours and 5 fours.

Faf and Virat added 148 runs for the first, giving MI no chance in the contest. However, the debutant Arshad Khan dismissed Faf du Plessis (73 off 43) in the 15th over and gave some respite for the team. A few balls later promoted finisher Dinesh Karthik holed out in the deep for a duck, handing Cameron Green his maiden IPL wicket.

But Glenn Maxwell (12* off 3) and Kohli (82* off 49) didn't allow further damage as the duo finished off things pretty quickly in the 17th over as RCB won the match by 8 wickets. Kohli hit the winning six over long-on and gave a perfect tribute to MS Dhoni's World Cup winning six at around the exact time 12 years ago.
16.2 A Khan to V Kohli
6 SIX!!! Kohli finishes off in style! Arshad misses his length and bowls this full. Right in the arc of Kohli on the stumps. The king gets on the front foot and swings over long on to deposit this in the stands! What a way to start the season for Kohli and RCB at home!!
16.2 A Khan to V Kohli
WD 136.1kph. Short and pitched outside the leg stump. Kohli stands his ground as the ball passes over his head.
16.1 A Khan to V Kohli
4 FOUR RUNS!! Over the wicket, short of length on the pads. Kohli gets on the front foot and swings in the leg side. Connects just enough to beat the short fine leg fielder for four runs.
