So, that's it from this thriller in Mumbai. Both teams will head off to Pune for the second T20I on Thursday. Do join us for that game and for all other cricketing action across the globe. For now, this is me Ayan Chatterjee signing off on behalf of co-commentator Ninaad Dixit and scorer/analyst Paras Yadav. Stay tuned for more cricketing action across the globe. Stay safe, happy, and cool. Goodnight and Cheers!
Hardik Pandya (India Captain): "Yes definitely. Yes, the body is looking good. I have a tendency to scare people off. I had a rough night and cramped up and did not bowl the 4th over. It's good and wants to put the team into difficult positions. We may lose a game here and there. It's all about the preparation for ICC events. I told Mavi to back himself and bowl without fear. He should not have the fear of getting hit and did that. So, I am happy for him. Yes, I want to bowl at the start and bowl in the nets. I like bowling with it and challenging the batters. If I can get a wicket here and there, I am happy. It helps the team. It's all about backing the youngsters as far as I am concerned. Happy with the win and looking forward to the next one."
Deepak Hooda (Player of the match): "I try to practice according to all positions. I try to give my 100% for every position. Me and Axar were planning to hit 2-3 big hits and once we get those, we would automatically get around 160. I love this game and want to contribute in every manner. I don't do much practice about the big hits but I have just come here playing domestic cricket and there are lots of spinners over there so I am aware of the situations."
Deepak Hooda is the player of the match.
Dasun Shanaka (Sri Lanka Captain): "Yes, it was while I was there. I am disappointed with the way we finished. We should have got those here at the Wankhede Stadium. So, it's the combination of pace and spin. I used the matchups well and that restricted India here. See just the first game, won't judge the top order. I will back the boys and I am sure they will come good in the coming games."
Time for the post-match presentation ceremony.
Shivam Mavi: "My leg was slipping as the landing spot was not that good. I was waiting since six years after playing for India Under-19. I got injured and thought that I'll never make it but I worked for it and I was very happy when Hardik gave me the India cap today. When you play the IPL, the nervousness disappears. I was trying to dismiss the batters bowled or leg before in the powerplay. My first wicket was the favorite one."
10:45 PM IST: What a terrific game we have had here in Mumbai where the pendulum swung from one way to another. At the end of it all, Axar Patel held his nerve to give India a narrow 2-run win. Heartbreak for the Sri Lankans as they were so close to winning this game.

Chasing a gettable 163 for the win, Sri Lanka kept on losing wickets at regular intervals. Kusal Mendis got 28 at the top of the order. Charith Asalanka and Bhanuka Rajapaksa barely got to double figures. Dasun Shanaka was the star with the ball as the skipper got 45 off 27 balls.  Wanindu Hasaranga scored a cameo of 21 off 10 balls and he looked good out there. In the end, Chamika Karunaratne almost took the side home with his 23 off 16 balls, but it wasn't enough as Sri Lanka fell short by 2 runs to finish with 160 in 20 overs. 6 extras were given by the fielding side.

The Indian bowlers bowled beautifully. Shivam Mavi was the pick of the bowlers for India with figures of 4/22 in 4 overs. He was ably supported by Umran Malik as he had figures of 2/27 in 4 overs. Harshal Patel picked up a couple of wickets but was expensive. Chahal and Axar were expensive too. Skipper Hardik Pandya bowled 3 overs at the top and gave away just 12 runs.

Earlier in the game, India put into bat first and got off to a rollicking start in the first two overs courtesy of Ishan Kishan as they got 26 runs in the first two overs. But they lost their way thereafter. Failures from debutant Shubman Gill, Surya Kumar Yadav, and Sanju Samson as all three got single-digit scores. Ishan Kishan scored 37 off 29 balls at the top of the order. The skipper Hardik Pandya scored 29 off 27 balls. But it was the Deepak Hooda and Axar Patel partnership that took India to a competitive total. They put on an unbeaten stand of 68 runs for the sixth wicket to help India score 162/5 in 20 overs with 5 extras given by the fielding side. Hooda was unbeaten on 41* off 23 balls while Axar was unbeaten on 31* off 20 balls.

A wicket apiece for Madushanka, Theekshana, Chamika Karunaratne, Dhananjaya de Silva, and Wanindu Hasaranga. Hasaranga and Theekshana bowled a miserly spell and so did Silva in his only over. Chamika was decent alongside Madushanka. Only Kasun Rajitha went the distance and was wicketless.

So, a thrilling win for India by 2 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the 3-match T20I series. Stay tuned for the post-match presentation ceremony coming your way soon.

A thriller at the Wankhede Stadium sees India win by 2 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the 3-match series.

19.6 A Patel to C Karunaratne
1W That's it! India close out the game! Axar Patel keeps his calm. Length delivery around middle stump. Karunaratne hits hard but fails to find the space hitting this towards the deep midwicket region. Runs a single and doesn't want the second, Dilshan Madushanka at the other hand is out of the crease and is run out at the striker's end. Karunaratne walks off the field disappointed with himself. We've had a terrific encounter to kickstart 2023!
4 needed off 1 here. 5 fielders on the ropes.

Rajitha sacrifices his wicket at the bowler's end. So, 9 down but Chamika will be back on strike.
19.5 A Patel to C Karunaratne
1W RUN OUT AT THE NON STRIKER'S END BUT IMPORTANTLY CHAMIKA KARUNARATNE WILL HAVE THE STRIKE FOR THE FINAL BALL AS SRI LANKA NOW NEED 4 OFF THE FINAL BALL. Axar bowls this fuller on the off stump, Karunaratne swings hard and plays this into the leg side to the left of deep midwicket. Runs the first one hard and calls for the second one. Deepak Hooda with a good throw at the bowling end. Axar Patel does the rest. It was Hooda and Axar in the first innings to close things out and it is Hooda and Axar now as well.
19.4 A Patel to C Karunaratne
0 86.6kph. Short of length and wide outside the off stump, perfectly inside the tramline. Karunaratne moves in the leg side then decides to step across the line to leave.
This could be the game. Is that the hit that takes Sri Lanka over the line? 5 now needed off 3 balls. Long discussion between Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel and Ishan Kishan.
