Match Details
Marizanne Kapp, the next batter in, joined forces with Wolvaardt for a brief period before Inoka Ranaweera bagged her first wicket by removing Kapp for 11(12). However, Ranaweera did not stop there and dismissed the well-set Wolvaardt for 18(23) following that. The game was evenly tempered before the 13th over, where Sugandika Kumari chipped in with two quick wickets and swung the pendulum in favor of the visitors. Chloe Tryon 10(10) and Anneke Bosch 0(2) were the victims.
The South African skipper Sune Luus kept moving the scorecard from one end but she was always short of partners as the hosts kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Nonetheless, the right-hander Luus dragged the game to the wire before being outwitted at 28(27) in the penultimate over. Eventually, South Africa required 13 from the final over and the hosts fell 3 runs short.
Earlier in the day, after being invited to bat first, the Sri Lankan openers started on a sedate note. Harshitha Madavi was striving to middle the ball early and it was skipper Chamari Athapaththu who kept the scorecard moving. Both the southpaws were particularly distressed by the away swingers. Sri Lanka chalked up 28 off the powerplay before Nadine de Klerk got the initial breakthrough for his side by dismissing Madavi 8(20).
Vishmi Gunaratne, then joined forces with Athapaththu and accelerated the innings. Skipper Athapaththu played the leading figure in the partnership while Vishmi also cashed in on looseners. The left-right duo stitched an 86-run partnership and Athapaththu got to her 6th T20I half-century. Their partnership was halted by an unfortunate run-out and Vishmi walked back for 35(34). However, the skipper kept marching on and registered 68(50), including 12 fours that took the Sri Lankan scorecard to a respectable total. Stick around for the post-match presentation!
