Sourya: So that's it for this game. The series is finely poised at 1-1 as we head into the third game of the series at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Tuesday. It is time for me Sourya Chowdhury and my fellow commentators Karthik Raj and Arijit Kundu to say goodbye. We hope you enjoyed the coverage. Goodnight.
Sourya: No surprises there, Ishan Kishan is named the man of the match on debut. Here is what he said: "It's not easy when you come here and play your first game. Mumbai Indians have taught me a lot. I've been there with so many senior players and they have given me very good advice. I love to play the reverse sweep but it didn't go my way (when he got out). I was upset because I wanted to finish the game. I think when Tom Curran bowled his first ball and I smacked him for six, that was the moment I felt I can keep doing this. I don't know if I'll get this feeling again but I was feeling like 'Finally I'm here.' This innings is for my coach's dad, who passed away a few days ago."
Virat Kohli had a lot to say after the commanding win. "Quite a good game for us. I think we ticked all the boxes we wanted to. Specially in the first innings with the ball. To give away only 34 in the last five, very smart bowling. Specially Washy, he had only one left-hander to bowl to and he used the big boundary to the right-handers better. It did get a bit better to bat in the second innings. The ball gripped a bit less. Having said that, they bowled too short, probably not on, on that surface. Special mention to Ishan. I tried to do what I can but he just took the game away from the opposition. Quality innings on debut. When you play in the IPL with such dominance like he has, against quality bowlers. We've seen him hit international fast bowlers fo big sixes. He knew he was hitting the ball well but he was calculated, not reckless. Today that counter-attacking innings of his and our partnership was something the team needed. I had to shift the focus back to the basics. Probably thinking of too many variables on the outside. I've always taken pride in doing the job for the team, so more happy about that than scoring 70 odd. Kept my eye on the ball. The management spoke to me about things. Anushka is here so she also keeps speaking to me about thinks. And I had a special chat with AB de Villiers before this game and he told me just to watch the ball. So I did. Credit to Hardik that he's bowling at least 3 overs for us in eveyr game. And the next six to eight months period he's promised he's going to commit everything to being the allrounder the team needs in all three formats. He plays for the team in all times and these kind of players are priceless. England showed how good they are in the first match, so you have to be professional and finish the job properly. That's what we did tonight."
This is what the England skipper had to say: "I think at the halfway stage we were in and around par. We were in the game but I thought we would have to bowl well to get over the line. I thought India bowled well. This was a different pitch to the one for the first game, less pace in it. And then they came out and put us on the backfoot almost from the start, and we didn't have a counter to that, which was disappointing. We want to learn as much as possible from tonight, I'm glad we played on this kind of wicket tonight, but disappointed with the way we played. Statistically there is always an advantage in chasing if there is dew around especially. Tonight there was no dew, full credit to India. Jos opening the batting for us strikes about 150 and averages about 50, so there's not a lot you can tell a guy like that. Great to see Jason Roy in form, when he plays like that, he's intimidating at the crease. You're always going to miss Mark Wood, he feels better today so hopefully he'll be fit for the next game. If not, the fourth game. We were prepared coming into the series. The next game is on a red-soil pitch, so probably going to turn, but we welcome these challenges."
Sourya: India has also handed a debut to Surya Kumar Yadav who wasn't even required to bat tonight and the top two teams in the world are now tied one a piece in this intriguing series.
Sourya: The Men in Blue were rocked back very early with Sam Curran bowling the perfect over to KL Rahul and getting him back in the hut. But thereafter the magic began. India had sprung a surprise by picking Ishan Kishan as an opener replacing the veteran Shikhar Dhawan and he repaid the faith in majestic fashion. Kishan began timing the ball to perfection from the first ball. He never seemed to be awed by the occasion and slammed the ball to all corners of the park, hitting five fours and four sixes in a classic attacking innings. He built a match-winning partnership with captain Virat Kohli who was not at his vintage best at the start but played some delectable shots towards the end of the innings to show that he is getting back his touch, staying unbeaten on 73 at the end. Both reached their fifties and by the time Adil Rashid got Ishan out, the game was all but over. Rishabh Pant came into hit a few lusty blows and in the end captain Kohli wrapped things up with a beautiful six off his hips. Though Sam Curran and Jofra Archer kept it tight, the likes of Jordan and Rashid were never really allowed to settle as India made light work of the chase.
Sourya: Roy did tonk a few to get to 46 but was deceived in the air by Washington Sundar to hole out in the deep. With Morgan and Bairstow out there in the 14th over, the English still had a platform to get to 180 plus, but the Indian bowlers pulled things back in great fashion in the backend to restrict them to 164/6. Sundar and Shardul Thakur both picked up figures of 2/29 and almost all the bowlers kept it tight.
Sourya: Virat Kohli won the toss and decided to field first with Bhuvneshwar umar trapping the dangerous Jos Buttler in front of the stumps in the very first over. Thereafter, the Indian bowlers, including the spinners, bowled to a specific plan, taking pace off the ball and keeping it wide of the power hitters, especially Jason Roy.
OVER
Sourya: The Two T20Is that have kicked off this 5-game series cannot have been more contrasting. After England kicked things off with a comfortable win in the opener on Friday, the teams returned to the Narendra Modi Stadium on a Super Sunday for the second game of the series. This time, everything fell into place for the hosts who dominated the Englishmen to pick up a commanding 7-wicket win with 13 balls still remaining.
Arijit: Skipper finishing off in style!! What a way to make a comeback in the shorter format!! Anchored well, supported the debutant well, played his shots, timed the ball with perfection and in the end playing it till the end and sealing the victory. This is the Kohli we know!! Oh, dear Kohli, where had you been all these days!! My eyeballs are simply overwhelmed with joy!!
