A right-arm medium pacer, Tickner plied his trade for the Central Districts in the New Zealand domestic circuit. A 27-year-tall pacer, Tickner rose into prominence while playing for the Central Districts in November 2017. He took a hat-trick against Wellington and forced the selectors to look up and take notice.
He finished as the leading wicket-taker in the 2017/18 Super Smash T20 League and looked very lethal with the ball. His repertoire kept on increasing and ended up with 21 wickets in 11 matches. Owing to his impressive showing on a consistent basis, Tickner was finally awarded a contract with the Central Districts for the 2018-19 season in June 2018. He was included in the New Zealand squad for the T20I series against India in January 2019. He made his debut and bagged the wicket of Rishabh Pant.
Tickner had earlier played club cricket in England and it was in the 2014 season that Tickner made rapid strides as a cricketer. Playing for Warsesley in the Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire Cricket League, Tickner picked 54 wickets at a staggering average of 15.94. He was picked to play in New Zealand A tour of UAE.
Shortly after his international debut, Tickner had to miss the Super Smash for the Central Districts, a tournament which they won after 9 years. He sprained his ankle while training and had to wait for his return. Tickner’s body structure and the way he plays make him more suited to the shortest format and if groomed well, he could go on serving New Zealand well in the coming years, especially in the T20 format.
In 2020, he was called in for the third ODI game against visiting Indians, as their main Kiwi bowlers were hit by either illness or injury. However, the Central Districts-based seamer wasn’t fortunate enough then to make his ODI debut. In 2021, he was named to the T20I squads for their tour of Bangladesh and Pakistan, which is scheduled to be played just before the 2021 World T20. If he performs up to the mark then the pacer could become the first replacement, barring some mishaps.
